This could well be happening, and some idiots are already supporting it.

Final Edit: Originally this post was supposed to focus on how the community was preemptively defending the addition of microtransactions, but at almost 1,000 replies later, it's kind of mutated into something else. Also, I probably won't be responding to anything in this thread anymore. It's outlived its purpose, so just let it die. Recent data mining has revealed some new items in the form of consumables that buff things like XP gain and drop rates. It is still speculation at this point, but the timing of these items along with a few other clues points to most of (if not all) these items being available for purchase at the Eververse trading company. Let me say it again; this is currently mere speculation, but fairly well informed speculation nonetheless. AND PEOPLE ARE ALREADY DEFENDING IT They are saying the benefits are small, don't really matter or give anyone any sort of an edge (already bullshit.) But seriously, though. In response to an argument I've already seen far too many times: Pay-to-win does not actually mean pay to win. It means paying real money to get an advantage over those who chose not to. We payed $140 dollars for this game with the expectation of being put on a level playing field, fairly competing for in-game goods with the expectation that effort must be put in to get what we want out. In a game in which, from launch, it was made clear that while the game was free, players could (and would be encouraged to) exchange real money for in game goods, this system works and is perfectly acceptable. But this distinction must be made clearly and immediately. For Bungievision to now be blurring the lines between the two, while enjoying the benefits of both, is unacceptable. By the way, notice how things have been going around here for the last few days? First, it was "I'm okay with emotes, but shaders should stay as things we earn." Next, "I'm okay with cosmetic items, but nothing that will help in gameplay." And now, it's "I'm okay with small beneficial items, but nothing too big." So then, what's next? Sooner or later, this is happening. Take a stand. And now, a message for Bungie: Very soon, Destiny will be facing quite a bit of new competition from games like Fallout 4, Black Ops 3, etc. This is no time to be testing the loyalty of your community. There has already been a large outcry against this, and many players have already threatened to leave. Please, Bungie. Don't do this to yourselves, to destiny. (I'm still not entirely convinced this isn't all just a plot by Activision to get people to jump ship to BO:3.) And if any of this does come true, my fellow guardians, have fun on Bungievision's wild ride to an empty game.
Sorry if this all seemed a bit incohesive. I just wanted to get this all out there.
EDIT: I think quite a few points being brought up can be explained by reading the following comment chain in this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/162643536/0/0/1 View replies, read original comment first, then my rebuttal, and so on. EDIT 2: The drop-rate buff items have been denied on Twitter, but all points made here are still valid both on principal alone, and if/when this is considered in the future. But this is good. We made noise, and forced Bungie's hand to address the issue. Maybe this community does still have influence after all?

    • Pay 2 win is misleading when you talk about Destiny. In Destiny (PvE) winning is sort of within yourself, nothing the game gives. If you consider just beating all the endgame activities winning then that's your goal. Maybe it's collecting all exotics or having three different characters maxed, whatever it is, it's your decision. The pay to win comes into play for PvP. If you can purchase things with cash (silver) to increase drop rates then that can lead to acquiring better gear faster than those who have not bought into it. This can be unfair in PvP due to those who may have put much time and effort into getting the best gear. Whatever they do doesn't matter to me but I'm never for micro transactions.

      • I do find it funny they waited until after ttk launch to do this, before it came out I was really on the fence about buying it but in the end traded in my vanilla copy for the legendary addition, had I not been able to do that it would have been a no go and if they talked about micro transactions definitely a no go.

        • I do think that pay for increased drop rates from the raid would clearly fall into the category of pay to win given the changes to the light system with TTK's release combined with gametypes such as Iron Banner and Trials of Osirus. I sincerely hope that they do not implement those consumables as it clearly sets a bad precedent that will likely to followed up on in future updates. With regards to XP boosts and subclass boost items: I have yet to see an argument for how that would give one player an edge over another whether it be pvp or otherwise. I think most players who have been around for a while will agree that this game can be a bit grindy, so to have alternate paths to getting your sub-classes or even gear maxed out is hardly a damnable offense from Bungie. You are not obligated to spend the money if you cannot justify it but at the same token it does not give those who do an advantage.. it simply reduces the amount of a time investment that they need to make in regards to the previously mentioned 'grindy' aspects of this game. Agree? Disagree?

I don't even need the data mining to be convinced that is what's happening. Bungie used to not be this way. The beginning to the end. Because as soon as it turns to a pay to win, im out. Sad

                • I think we will have to see where/how we get some of the new items before we jump to the conclusion that Destiny is becoming pay to win. Most of the 'get better raid drops' items are likely to be obtained through game play. It wouldn't surprise me if those items aren't being added to address the problem with crappy loot drops that a lot of people are complaining about right now. Just like those class increase packs might just be items that will be included in new copies of the game, so players who are just starting have a way to catch up more quickly, since there really isn't enough content to comfortable fully upgrade a subclass until you are already in end game.

                  • Not gonna lie it seems like you just had a theoretical argument with yourself over a theoretical possibility. When are people gonna learn we don't create these products. If they want to charge 2 million dollars for a paper clip they have every right too. Doesn't mean I'm gonna buy it. Business is literally just about finding the correct value for your product. Not gonna lie but I think things have been underpriced in the past. It is obvious there is still value to be gained from these types of products and I have no issue with a company, especially one that has investors they need to keep happy, finding the proper value of there product. Obviously as price goes up so will the number of people purchasing the product. Right now Activision and bungie are finding the correct value for this franchise and we will see where they settle in.

                    • i feel like this would only be a big deal in competitive play, although i don't support them selling better drop rates for real money. i think that guy in the link in your first edit had a good point. i don't think it would affect me directly, so i wouldnt stop playing because of that alone. but, like many people have said, if they make the grind so bad that the only option is to pay, then i would stop playing

                    • Battlefield sells Shortcut Kits for real money. Hasn't given anyone an advantage that I've seen; hell, it's disadvantaged a lot of people who didn't take the time to learn as they went. Just saying.

                        • I've always been ok with Bungie selling cosmetic items, I'm also ok with them selling whatever they want. If the game becomes unplayable(highly unlikely) without some cash shop item, then I'll play till that point and go play something else.

                            •
"It means paying real money to get an advantage over those who chose not to."
Where and how would this "advantage" be expressed? The only venue where this could possibly take place is in power enabled PvP events like IB and Trials. There is no "advantage" elsewhere in the game.
fairly competing for in-game goods
We are not competing for in game goods. There is no scarcity, the in game items are not a finite resource. My gaining a certain weapon does not negate your chance to gain that weapon.
Pay-to-win does not actually mean pay to win
It means exactly that or it means nothing. And you know this implicitly because you can only envisage this argument in terms of "advantage" and "competition." This is entertainment. If you are playing it for any other motive than maybe you should have a good, long look at yourself. If people want to spend money to get emotes, consumables that increase XP gains, or max out a sub-class who the -blam!- cares.
