I have mained a defender since day 1 so I'm a little biased but I started playing on nightstalker this week and I've been blown away!! It is extremely efficient at taking out large groups of enemies and not just killing them but making mad orbs!
I never thought I would even question the best pve class as long as I played this game but in wondering what all of you think.
I'm talking about defender with helm of saint 14 by the way!!
My conclusion is the defender is best for high level content ex nightfalls and hard raids where as nightstalker is best for everything else. Normal raids. Strikes. Story missions...
So if I had to vote for best. Dude idk that's y I'm asking all of you!!! Haha
EDIT: thanks for all the votes and replies. I know I'm a lot of them but I like hearing people's ideas and giving them my opinions as well! Let's keep it goin!

WTF WHERE ARE THE WARLOCKS
-
5 RepliesWtf serious ... no warlock ? Stormcaller rekks all adds and best crowd control
-
Raids: defender Strikes/patrols etc night stalker
-
I'm a warlock and I love playing with a night stalker in my Fireteam but that defender class with helm of Saint 14 will always be the best

I main a Titan but I gotta say that right now they both are sweet, you can be a defensive support role or an offensive support role, that's the biggest difference in my eyes. For the raid both can support in their own ways. Titans: if you want to hide because you are taking too much damage then take cover in the shelter and maybe get a shield, damage resistance or a buff to damage while collecting some orbs. Or Hunters: Can be orbs machines, can tether enemies so that everyone else can target that foe and deal massive damage or can pop smoke and enemies won't see you for a bit. I haven't started my Hunters subclass quest yet so I don't know all of its new features. This is just from PVE gameplay.

1 ReplyEdited by sn9kes: 9/27/2015 2:17:00 AMThey are very different but defenders are better at the end of the day. They can increase your whole teams damage and armor. And I main Hunter so I'm not bias either. Without a defender Titan I doubt my team could of beat the new raid, but we could of gone without a nightstalker.

Defender is a more of a Defensive Support while Nightstalkers keeps the traits of its previous subclasses and is more of an offensive support class.
-
Nightstalker is a bit more of a flexible support class, with it's orb generation, invisibility, and offensive supporting super. Defender is a diehard support class. OP Is right, for once
-
Nightstalker with light of the pack or whatever it's called active with a storm caller in the group is insane. Orbs for days.
-
Nightstalker + Novabomb = mass destruction

2 RepliesThey're both so damn good. I give the edge to defender, just because I think it has slightly more utility and better grenades. I don't think Nightstalker has that great exotic like Saint-14, but I think Gravaton Forfeit is good and Sealed Ahamkara's Grasps are very good. I need to level them and use them more. If I pair them with Monte Carlo they could be fantastic.

6 RepliesWho doesn't want to crit with a rocket launcher?
I could only imagine how Nightstalker and Gjallarhorn would of worked in the days of old ;-;
Solo, defender. Coop, nightstalker.

Edited by S3CR3TN1NJA: 9/27/2015 12:38:59 AMOkay I'm biased as well as I have maimed hunter since day 1. And I use exclusively night stalker now. Here are the awesome perks of nightstalker class that put it up as a contender in my favorite order. -can turn team mates invisible briefly -traps and blinds enemies -enemies killed while trapped grant a bonus to armor and regen for nearby allies. Stacks to five (fully stacked you basically become a bullet sponge) -shade step, dodge captains all day. -master of orbs. My record is 12 orbs in one super. -smoke grenade completely blinds and poisons enemies.

2 RepliesSunsinger with the new lock exotic scout

4 RepliesNIGHTSTALKER all the way they can turn the whole fireteam invis!
-
They're both effective in their own way.

1 ReplyGood PvE Team: Nightstalker OR Gunslinger Defender Sunsinger OR Stormcaller Good PvP Team: Gunslinger OR Bladedancer Sunbreaker Voidwalker
STRIKERS SUCK
17 RepliesDefender is still better. It's much, much more versatile. Nightstalker is purely crowd control. Defenders give more of a damage buff, can be used to prevent a team wipe in high level pve content, can provide an over shield to help players stay alive, and when paired with helm of saint is the most powerful pve super in the game, hands down. I'm guessing the only reason night stalker has so many votes is because of how many hunters are on these forums.

1 ReplyI like to play medic with my sunsinger.

5 RepliesGo and watch the end of Mr fruits Nightfall video from this week. That will answer this question.
-
1 ReplyAgainst basic enemies, Defender. Against the Taken, Nightstalker easily. Overall, Nightstalker.
-
1 ReplyHow can it be anything other than defender? Don't get me wrong. Nightstalker is EXTREMELY important but the defender benefits the entire group with each super
-
1 ReplyBoth. Defender is defensive support, night stalker is offensive support.
-
4 RepliesGuys I think we're missing the easy solution, instead of comparing them why not put them on the same fireteam? this combo destroys bosses! Night stalker tethers boss while defender pops weapons of light bubble. Personally I think these two subclasses should always be paired with each other
-
5 RepliesI need more sub class options. Sorry no vote.
