NON GJALLARHORN OWNERS ONLY
I have a theory, it may be wrong, but if everyone answers truthfully then maybe we're on to something.
I have never downed crota being the swordbearer. I have asked lots of people and the majority of them got a gjallarhorn only after they have killed him with the sword. Seems to happen the next week after. As far as what happened before The Dark Below release, i dont know. Maybe they implemented this *requirement* after its release. Maybe im wrong. Lets find out!!
Edit: Just to clarify, by this I don't necessarily mean that you got one on the kill, but sometime shortly after. Like a week or a month after. I just want to see if downing crota with a sword is a requirement to get a gjallarhorn. Thank you for all the replies!

Ive run the sword over 65% of the times ive beaten crota and I have never ever gotten a Gally drop from it. Mine came from nightfall. Deathsinger twice and POE 28 chest.

I've never been swordbearer, but I got a Gjallarhorn from being Knight distraction. It's RNG. You aren't guaranteed to get one for being swordbearer. My friend has always been swordbearer and he's never gotten one before.

I two man crota every week with my friend and always run sword. I've killed him over 100 times easy and still don't have a G.

Before I had gally I slayed him with his own blade.
