Trials Matchmaking = Great

Keep up the stellar work Bungie!!! The matchmaking for trials is phenomenal. It’s really appreciated getting constantly matched up against top tier players while I’m just a little pee-on. Keep up the great work you guys. Really enjoy getting creamed round after round. Loaaaaaaaads of fun! Thx Bungie

  • There's always the option not to play. If enough players choose that option, things tend to change.

    • This old 0.3% tortoise has been playing Trials since way back; then - it was mostly for bounties and a bit of fun with my regular buds. The aim was to see how far we could get, eg, 3 wins or 5 wins, which dropped loot. Going flawless was not a realistic goal…we played for fun! Since then, a lot has changed…the Sunset debacle reduced my Friends List to virtual zero almost overnight…I departed for WF and had a hoot, then came back…and played vanilla stuff, mostly…though when a new Trials weapon appeared, I’d go grind out the engrams until I got it, and any armour bits that I wanted, eg, the Warlock doggy lid! 👌 I went to the Lighthouse once in D1 via a raffle win…with 2x slayer Trials dudes…and made a few plays that helped the team to win, though I was most definitely ‘carried’, for sure! Now, when I play, I simply get a card and just grind out engrams…especially on double-points events. My guns still fire popcorn and party streamers, and my armour is more akin to tissue-wrap! So, no change there since D1 days…🤔 Unlike the stomper crews of no-miss ohks from impossible angles, whose ability to shred my teammates and me never ceases to amaze me?! And, even if we’re using same guns, mine just never seem to be able to do what their guns do?! 🧐 Despite all the silly ‘git gud, Skrub’ nonsense, cannon fodder Casuals like me help keep the Trials mode afloat. When we stay away, for whatever reason, Trials withers on the vine. It’s happened a few times, and just died…because Casuals refused to be stomped for the benefit of the whiney stomper bods. Serious PvP dudes go play serious PvP games. The stomper whiners can’t deal with the actual top tier serious PvP dudes…that’s why they whine ‘all I want to do is play with my mates and not play a sweat fest every match…’ 🥱 Yeah, right! 😴 Occasionally during my Trials grind, I end up on a team with 2x seriously top tier dudes, who do to the stomper team what they were dishing out to the cannon fodder teams - in spades! These games were an absolute delight to see! 😎😎😀 But, such games are rare, even more so these days. Trials is a stompfest, pure and simple! The Persistence Card is a joke… Here’s what I would like to see happen… 1. Get 7x accumulated wins regardless of losses incurred along the way to visit the Lighthouse for rewards as normal…achieved during a Trials event. That’s it! It’s not rocket science. 👈 Then there’s this… 2. A tiered league / Division based system so players only play against opponents who are slightly above/below their own level…and if/when they’re good enough, they automatically get promoted or relegated to the next Division, accordingly. 3. Wall of Fame / exclusive emblems and armour - for the best 3x teams and individual players for that Trials event. FYI: GJake just hosted a tournament for some of the top tier PvP players…it is worth a look if you haven’t yet seen it. This is what BHQ should be organising…see #3 above. 👈 Last comment: all I’ve ever wanted in Trials / PvP is a fair fight on a level playing field, so we all could duke it out and have some fun along the way. It’s as simple as that. Trials needs Casual players like me…or it will wither away once more… 🫠 Ease springs! 🫡

Honestly, if you ever want to go flawless, all you need is patience, because I go flawless every single weekend and sometimes it takes me ~40 minutes to go flawless, and sometimes it takes me 4+ hours; it's all up to the matchmaking to give you decent teammates you can win from. I'm a very high-skill player, and I get put in what I like to call "low-skill lobbies," which means that in the lobbies I get put into, the people are just bot walking and generally get in the open, not even trying to peek shoot or hold an angle. It's been like this for about 4-6 seasons since I started getting seriously into trials, and TBH, I prefer the high-skill games over the low-skill ones because those go by faster. In the low-skill ones, I tend to have difficulty taking my time when picking off the low-skill players since they are often unpredictable and do things and push specific ways that make no sense sometimes. In most of my games, I have to go out of my way to hard carry the team to get a few kills to build my teammate's confidence to push with me, hold good angles, and do good pushes. If you dedicate yourself to learning the fundamentals of playing a 3v3 gamemode such as trials by practicing them in other crucible playlists, you can learn how to play like the people you consider top-tier, you just need dedication and patience.

This is exactly what you get… People like you wanted sbmm…guess what…you got used to making the same bonehead plays and when you go into trials, you get punished for it because you never actually learned proper mechanics, movement, ability usage ect. You got used to these same bonehead plays working for you in these bot lobbies and when you play an “average”, let alone a good player you get absolutely dismantled. This is what the “top tier” players you talk about have been telling everyone. This is why cbmm should replace general matchmaking. As far as trials goes, we had an amazing setup during the initial drop of witch queen and y’all ruined it with complaints similar to this. Highest percentage of flawless players ever. But no, y’all had to complain. And with the design of the game type, there is no other matchmaking that would be compliant with the game mode. Try learning from your mistakes. It’ll make you a better player.

              • You’ll get matched against people like me eventually. The ones who go in to complete the seasonal challenge and don’t really worry about loadouts 😂. My teammates will need to learn how to play with a boat anchor if they want to succeed in going flawless.

              • Here are my theories on this: Casual players are set up to lose most of the time - most games are 0-5 losses and some games are so bad one team barely gets a kill. The amount of cheating (I consider modded controllers cheating) is laughable. Playing early in the morning is generally the best time since most of the really good players are kids and they don’t wake up early. The few times I’ve managed to go flawless we’re always in the morning.

                • On the flip side I have to double carry every game which is super stressful. Genuinely dislike the solo queue that Trials has become 😔

The game mode depends on winning 7 times in a row. SBMM would not work with the current format. EDIT: Also, longer queue times sucks

                    • They tried a fairer matchmaking system some time ago, but it upset the crucible gods and the streamers because they were being matched against other top players, and they couldn't stomp low skilled casuals. One well know streamer quoted, "every game I played was an absolute sweatfest this weekend". That was when it was put into place, so it was quickly reverted back so the elite could get back to their easy matches. I haven't played any crucible for months, but try what I did. I queued solo, played as good as I could with the loadout I wanted to use, and didn't care about being stomped 5-0. I didn't care who I was matched with or against, and if we won a match or even a round, it was a bonus. Go play for what loot you can get, not some meaningless emblem or title, and have fun.

                          • So the way it works is because Trials has such a small playerbase, they widen the parameters of who pairs with who, so you get matches where you are given two teammates who are brand new, and all of the enemies are at your level or higher. This is obviously very discouraging, and creates a positive feedback loop of ensuring that only the best players tend to stay in Trials. This leads to my personal theory that Trials is actually the work of the winnower, trying to create the perfect pattern
