I get it. It’s the only thing that keeps me booting the game up during a drought like this.

That's exactly how I felt in Destiny 1. PvP kept the game fresh for a long long time, for me. I just don't feel that way about Destiny 2 PvP.

Has it always been that way in D2, or is it just the auto/MT/Bastion spam meta?

It's sorta always been that way. They really fouled up everything with this worthless token system. Then they bombard you with worthless blue loot. Once in a while you get a legendary drop and you get purple loot when ranking up, but 95% of the time it is dismantle fodder. Destiny 1 use to drop all kinds of rewards after a match. Exotics, Xur coins, legendary marks, IB gear, planetary materials, etc. Plus you could rank up the crucible vendor for great loot. You also had weapon specific bounties you could do.
