Video game genres. RPG vs. FPS

RPG

68

FPS

63

These are two of my favorite video game genres and I want to see which one people like more. Me personally, I like FPS games more but that’s because for some reason I get bored of RPGs faster then I do FPSs. So I go with the genre that can hold my attention longer.

  • They are both good in their own ways

I feel like fps games hold my attention for longer solely because of multiplayer, I take the time to get good at PvP which ends up with me putting a lot of time in. But in terms of which I actually genuinely think are better made it’s probably RPG. I have 150 hours on Sekiro and it is my favourite game of all time. I have 2000 hours on destiny 2 and it doesn’t even make top 10. The only fps that I think is really, really well made is CSGO.

    • I use to really like fps titles but I've grown to like jrpgs/rrpgs/action-rpgs and MMOs just a tad bit more

I'd just say FPS for video games cause having all the elements of an RPG feeling natural doesn't work as effectively on a video game as opposed to table top games

    • I’d be lying if it didn’t choose FPS games but I think RPGs may have more potential. That being said, RPGs rarely have multiplayer and being able to play with friends is important to me. FPS games almost always have some sort of Co-op PVE or PVP.

    • I can play hundreds of hours of RPGs and not get bored of them. Shooters last me a couple matches before I lose interest. Competition and gameplay is not enough to keep me into a game so RPGs all the way

As it turns out my list of favourite games JRPGs would take the top but that isn't to undervalue how much excitement I got and get from playing Black ops 1 and the Destiny franchise.

      • FPSs tend to be a much more stressful experience for me than RPGs. I’m constantly scanning around, looking for enemies, involved in the heat of the moment, whereas in an RPG, I’m only worried about where I want to take the story next. Yes, RPGs have their stressful moments, but in the whole, FPSs are way more stressful than RPGs.

      • They’re both good... depends on my mood. I love being able to explore and build up a character in an RPG. But in my experience, FPS games have a tendency to be a bit more simple to play, and sometimes just being able to sit down and play is more enjoyable at a certain moment.

      • FPSs are a good way to cool down and unwind after a hard day at work. If I don’t have a lot of mental energy and want quick enjoyment, I’ll boot up an FPS. Whether that’s for an online match or two, or even to play through a campaign. I never have to invest that much of myself. FPSs are like fast food. But if I really want to sit down and get wrapped up in a journey. It’s RPGs all the way. FPSs can’t scratch that itch of watching character development. Even when they do a decent job and try, they just aren’t built that way. RPGs are a like going out for a meal.

      • I dunno. I could play both for a while, given the player base and sufficient content updates, except in the case of Titanfall 2. That game is fine where it is.
Hecking Spitfires
• Depends. If i just want to have some quick fun, I’ll play a shooter & if I want to take time to invest myself into a narrative I’ll play an rpg.

      • RPGs are probably my second favourite genre of game. FPS are one of my least favourite. There's just more variety in RPGs as a genre, whether it's turn based vs action based, the kind of story it tells, whether it's dialogue-based decision-making or build-based decision-making. Plus I can always find an RPG that does something really interesting with its gameplay, or tells a really great story. Whereas a FPS is almost always generic in both its story and its gameplay, and never really does anything new or interesting. Platformers are my favourite genre though.

Shooters. As much as I like an RPG, most of them I see have way too much Japanese sh!t in it, not to mention bare skin. EDIT: All the RPG’s on my phone are Japanese for some reason.
