The Philosophy of the Light and Darkness

Within the Destiny universe there are two forces that govern the functioning of existence apart from our traditional physics. These forces are, in a word, Light and Darkness. These are not only forces though, they are also philosophies, and both have been in conflict with each other since time immemorial in an effort to create what they each believe to be the perfect state of existence. While the exact nature of the Darkness is unknown, we are able to draw some conclusions. As previously stated, it is both a philosophy as well as a force of nature. We can also assume it is a conscious entity based on Oryx and the Worm's claims to be able to commune and speak directly with it. The Darkness' version of the perfect universe is one where all weakness has been cut away until only the "final, perfect shape" remains. While not confirmed, one can easily assume that the perfect shape is the Darkness itself. The Darkness' goal is accomplished through the Sword and Killing Logics. Taken together, these logics are the statement that there is power in death and killing, and that the perfect shape is reached through a perversely extreme twist on Darwinism. Basically, anything that can be killed should be because if it can be killed it does not deserve life. It is your responsibility to kill anything you can because it both removes weakness from the universe, thus making the universe closer to the perfect shape, and that killing proves yourself stronger and emphasizes your own right to existence. This philosophy is championed by the Worm gods and the Hive. Ever since they freed the Worms on Fundament the Hive have been hunting the Light and practicing their Sword and Killing Logics as they expand across the universe. The Light's version of the perfect universe is very similar to our own concept of utopia. An endless Golden Age where cultural and technological advancements we'd consider unheard of are common place. Widespread peace and prosperity and mutual cooperation between all species willing to embrace the Light's philosophy. The Traveler's sole purpose is to champion the philosophy and channel the force of Light, and we as Guardians serve the Traveler. While the underlying philosophy of the Light is nothing short of benevolent, this does not mean that the Traveler is incapable of extremely ruthless actions and historically uses a very utilitarian thought process in its efforts to achieve its goal. It has also abandoned countless other species in an effort to save itself when confronted by Oryx and the Darkness. As the principle champion of the Light it realizes that should it ever die then the Darkness in inevitably wins. It is willing to sacrifice certain civilizations for the greater good of life in general. Note: Hope you all enjoyed the post. • Seems to me like the Darkness is the stronger of the two entities. I mean, look at Oryx: -Controls an entire army of Taken warriors -Has an entire civilization at his command -Can commune with the deep -Has a good understanding of the Sword Logic If this is what the Darkness grants its followers, sign me up!

The darkness= bungie The light= lag Wait what??? Yup that's right, just before destiny was released upon the world, the light created the inevitable lag in hopes that it would cause the gullible players of destiny to rage quit and quit the game. This way the light hoped that it would save the innocent from wasting their precious time on a game that fails at every corner and prevent players from "throw-ing- money at the screen". No hate;)

      • Two alien races fighting a proxy war. The light uses the traveler and its followers. The darkness uses the hive. This is an old war over conflicting philosophies. Think Babylon 5. We need to find our own path and tell them both to piss off.

        • Or, you know, the Traveler is a machine running from a pack of dangerous psychopaths, hopping from planet to planet, in an effort to find and manipulate a species to protect it, only to abandon that species when they fail. In my opinion, the Traveler is in it for self a preservation. There is no light. There is no darkness. There is only the desire to kill the enemy. Hence why we shoot everything.

          • The syzygy was an act of the Deep, not the Traveler. It was a way to both make the krill desperate enough to accept the power from the Deep while also fueling hatred towards the Traveler.

            • Too be fair humans, exos, and awoken are really no better then the hive. We guardians really dont think to much about what were defending, having the natural instinct built into us the second we beat the darkness what do you thinks gonna happen? There are what 5 or 6 factions with the big 3 being Dead Orbit, FWC, and New Monarchy, they would immediately have another faction war and yes to those who dont know there was a very bad faction war where many guardians and normal people alike all fought and died over which faction they though should be in command of the Last City. The Vanguard eventually stopped the war and took control, but this time with almost all guardians being aligned with one faction or another this time they may not be able to stop it. This is why I think the Traveler attempted to leave is in the first place, it could see the power we were capable of obtaining but it also saw our lust for knowledge and power and need to always have more and it thought to itself even if they beat the darkness how long until these people tear themselves apart with the power I bestowed them. It might aswell just keep the darkness. The Hive, Darkness, and us Guardians aren't all that different. Guardians just have more layers and more potential to be monsters.

            • If the travler didnt live to fight another day, the guardians of earth wouldve never rose and defeated oryx And think of how much wouldve been saved if the hive were stopped on fundament, they have likely killed billions before reaching earth, they have if you consider humanities population along with the species theyve wiped out The ends dont usually justify the means, but there's always exceptions

If you read Toland's ravings in the Ghost Fragment: Darkness 3, Toland posits there should be imagined not two queens... but three. Three "queens," and what would they be? We know of two. The first would be the queen who writes a "book of law, and her rule is just." Compared with the other two, the Light is most like this queen-metaphor; the Light seeks to elevate cultures and ethics to promote flourishing. Consider the description of the Golden Age art piece which states that a number of subjects viewing the work felt sensations of well-being and the expectation of "a great truth to be revealed," as well as how the arrival of the Traveler tripled human lifespans and erased prejudices. The third queen described is like the Darkness; this queen builds an army and conquers. Darkness seeks to become a singularity, to become the only real thing and become its own universe and self-existent truth. So who is the second queen, who "builds a tower so her people can see the stars"? At first glance, we might immediately associate this queen with the Light, on account of our own Tower and how the technological advances of the Golden Age flung humanity to the stars. However, this is unlikely since the Guardian's Tower is just one of several similar structures around the Wall, and the Light is less about exploration than it is beneficence and justice. So what then? What is this tower-building queen? I think she is related to the Guardian Nightmare, as I call it. There is a Grimoire entry that describes a recurring dream that apparently numerous Guardians experience. A dream where the dreamer fights their way through everyone they know or have known, killing their way along... to reach a tower. The dream's content is not unlike the journey of Childe Roland to the Dark Tower, but to stay in the confines of Destiny's lore, it seems sensible to say that Guardians always come into contact with all three queens. First the Light, then against the Dark, and then the dream of the Nightmare Tower. Toland posits that the queen who builds a tower builds it for her people, so they can see the stars. Have we got any information about entities that are like this in Destiny? Edit: I should clarify that the second entry I mentioned is Ghost Fragment: Legends 1 and not all Guardians fight an army. Some just walk through a fertile field, but the tower is always there. The card calls it (or some place beneath it) the Deep Stone Crypt.

Very good post. Its worth noting that this war extends beyond the universe Destiny takes place in, as well. Several grimoire cards allude to other timelines, with their own version of the Traveler, and the Darkness. You can imagine some timelines being very similar to the ones in Destiny, and others quite different, with recurrent patterns and themes being the only hint that they are related. Bungie could probably make entire franchises out of these distant timelines, and only a tiny minority of their fan base would even begin to grasp the "tru7h". Hell Destiny could just be the most recent franchise in this broader story of the battle between the shadow and the light. Who is Rasputins cousin?
This journey begins with doubt. And ends in solace. One by one they fall, and you realize you are alone. There, in the shadow of night, you see the world splinter, the Darkness thrive. And you fight, with more than your Light... you use your pain. You remember its source, the way it gained its ground. But you never wavered. You never believed. You loved her. How couldn't you? Listen, that's her calling... you back. But you know now that is where you will die.
And who is she?

                    • Good read, it was accurate right up until the comment about the traveler wiping out the fundament. The God wave (syzygy) was created by the worms, and the worms blamed the traveler. It was all part of the worm plan to convince the hive to take the bargain. The traveler valued the fundament, didn't want to destroy it.
