35 RepliesEdited by Recon Number 54: 2/18/2015 3:33:54 PMIf she's my girlfriend, lover and/or wife today, (and we're both happy) I don't see any significant relevance to "what they were" decades ago. All grown people were children once. So does being with someone who was once a child mean that I am now with a child and am a pedophile? No. It's who a person is now that matters. If they care about me, if I care about them, if we are happy with each other and with ourselves, what does their past have to do with today's happiness? But that's just me. And my answer is mine and can only apply to me. Other people are welcome to draw their own lines and decide what they are willing/unwilling to accept. What if your wife told you that she "did a lot of dancing and a little hooking" in order to pay for college? What if your GF told you that she was abused as a child? Or was an abuser? People are a culmination of their life experiences, their memories, and their actions. Each of those things bring them to who and where they are today. The past cannot be undone, it can't be erased, and if I look at someone and say "I like/love who you are today, but I cannot accept who you were (or what you did) in the past", then I don't really accept or care for who is standing in front of me. Those historical events made them into who they currently are, they are part of the path that brought them into my life, if I have and want them in my life now, I should understand and accept their history before we met.

Edited by Smarkdow: 3/25/2015 1:25:42 AMI'd recognize that admitting that to me took a lot of courage on her part, and I would appreciate that. But would I continue the relationship? Honestly, I don't really know.
