This is not how you write an LGBT relationship…

….Because it’s not how you write any relationship. Osiris and Saint have absolutely zero chemistry whatsoever, and it’s made even worse by (once again) lazy writing for Osiris just like in Lightfall. Remember when Osiris had a conversation with Ana in Season of the Seraph about Saint making tea for him? THAT was good writing. It gave some real backbone to their relationship while revealing how Saint’s love softened Osiris once they were no longer together (which makes perfect sense given how cold and calculating Osiris used to be). A single well written 2-minute conversation (even if just over the radio) will always be better than the rigid and watered down story beats we’re seeing right now.

  • I’ve mostly found the writing to be terrible throughout the game and characters uninteresting. Savathun was/is the exception.

This is from the studio who created Nimbus. Who wrote the storyline for Lightfail. Two adult men acting like girls in a highschool manga is par for the course. Humanizing a space fantasy story is fine. Gay or straight, a strained relationship is a universal thing. Most of us have been there at some point, regardless of which way we swing. And -blam!- preference shouldn’t obstruct your ability to understand and sympathize with that feeling. But having that be the main focus for weeks on end, while your villain is an afterthought in the lorebooks, is just pandering. And doing a -blam!- job of it too 😂 Heck, even Zavala throwing yet another hissyfit over his wife, after we spent an entire -blam!- season sorting his -blam!- out for him, was eating up screentime that could have been used to make the Witness seem like a less lispy, monologuing Pixar vape stick. Less is more. I.m.o., small poignant and personal moments between two people against the narrative backdrop of an ongoing battle for existence far outclasses several seasons of gay cruise planning, tea sipping, “Dear diary, why won’t he just understand that I desperately love him, boo-hoo, sniffle sniffle”.

      • I don't get how some of the lore cards and books are actually really good pieces of writing and yet the story narrative ends up being this bad. Thinking about the One Eyed Mask lore card, Hallowfire Heart and the Cayde lore book off the top off my head. Take the people who wrote that stuff and get them to do the story. That lore comes across as real, it has an effect because the story told has genuine drama, or events that have real impact, and it leaves you feelling something for the individuals in it. This Osiris/Saint weekly car crash is just utter cringe and some of the worst writing in gaming I have ever witnessed. It's awful.

        • I think the main issue doesn’t even have to do with the fact that they are LGBT, it has to do with the fact that they took two characters who had a lot of lore, backstory, and character development, and the writing is flanderizing them to “they are the two characters who are in a relationship” and that’s basically it. Literally everytime they appear together, or have anything that refers to them, does so showing “look, Saint and Osiris are in a relationship and love each other,” while leaving room for nothing else. This isn’t a new pitfall either, there are a lot of works that take the focus off everything that’s interesting about two characters and reduce them to “the couple,” focusing almost entirely on the relationship element, leading the characters, and by extension the relationship, to become stale and boring. It’s storytelling 101, if they want to convey the strength of their feelings, they need to start showing, and stop telling, or at least tell in a way that’s not so hamfisted and fanfiction-y (Mara & Sjur and Zavala and Safiya are perfect examples).

        • Cracks me up. These are two of the most eminent and powerful guardians ever. Osiris is meant to be one of the smartest and resilient guardians ever. He survived the ves, infinite forest and savathun! Saint is more famous than the beatles, and tougher than Buzz lightyear. Yet the writing of them is so shallows and derivative that it puts a new level of cringe on things. Its like watching Hinge and Bracket whine and bicker - silly and insulting.

The writing is awful because this entire relationship was shoehorned to begin with. They were already established since D1, we already had their back story on why they left the city, where they were, and what they were doing all the way until they returned. Osiris himself during the Osiris dlc said so himself, he'd been investigating the vex, and searching for Saint within the infinite forest the entire time. Up until he was last seen, Saint was always out on missions on behalf of Osiris until his disappearance. With no romantic notions, hints, or even the slightest clues in any in game lore/story, reaching all the way back into D1. We even see Saints dead body with our own eyes. So....somehow they are a couple, and this relation"ship" had to have either already existed the entire time since they were banished. OR...they just shoehorned that in after we brought back Saint. Even though Saint just sat in the tower literally the entire time, while Osiris is absolutely no where near earth...
think mark think
• Osiris likes someone who is more simple and speaks from the heart. After all the chaos of existence itself being at stake, Saint is easy to talk to and down to earth. Their relationship isn't even a cringe touchy feely relationship and is just based on everything they've been through. I don't mind it.

THANK YOU. If it was a straight relationship, it would be JUST as tedious to view. It literally doesn’t matter that it’s 2 guys, a robot and a dilf, man and woman or whatever, Bungie is terrible at writing relationships.

                      • Someone below mentioned the deep, well written lore of the characters and makes me beg the question: Why don't they just follow the lore they wrote themselves about the characters? There's a reason the lore is so well received and hours and hours of interpretations on YouTube of people making their opinions and predictions. It's like reading beautiful poems and descriptions about a painting only for bungie to reveal the painting and it was a finger painting made with materials from the Dollar Tree.

It's literally a fanfic written by someone who doesn't like the characters. It's terrible writing in general, I stopped playing the story week 3 because how awful the story was in just the first 3 weeks. Only to find out is somehow it took a nose dive from stupidtown.
