why is lesbian its own letter?
gay means a homosexual person so lesbian is kind of redundant
it should just be GBT.

5 RepliesBecause lesbians have their own special kind of suffering because they're women as well as homosexuals. They NEED their own letter because they suffer more, since gay men still have the male privilege.

I think it should've ended at LGBT, or GBT (because of OP). I mean, everything else is just a variation of those 4 (or 3) letters.

Although gay has come to me homosexual in general, colloquially it refers to male homosexuality. In order to specifically identify female homosexuality, lesbian is used.
-
Gay usually implies male.
-
Lesbian is female specific. Gay, while technically it can mean both, usually means male.
