Aim assist is a very confusing subject for many people, and even those that think they understand may not fully know what they are saying. I am here to clear this up.
Aim assist on primary weapons is very much different than that of sniper rifles; the aim assist on primary weapons slows the sight as it travels over an enemy and drags the bullet slightly towards center mass. Have you ever noticed how when shooting a phalanx with your primary weapon you will hit the shield when your reticle is clearly over the hand that is poking out? Ever tried switching to a sniper to solve the problem? That leads me to my next point: snipers DO NOT drag a bullet towards center mass, they only slow the reticle down, nothing else. Having higher aim assist makes drag scopes easier, but not much else.
A lot of people in this community complain about the aim assist on sniper rifles and how they make sniping super easy, but that is not the case. It isn't how it works, if you want to see a planet destiny video on how aim assist works that is pretty much summarized by my post click here and/or here. I haven't watched the second one yet but I will update my post if it changes my views on the subject. Thank you for hearing my two cents.
For those of you who want a more in depth explanation here is a great point made by CopicX FireA Gun:

I will try to explain aim assist from 'my' experiences and research. Remember this is only my experience and it is not 100% correct. However I do believe it is very accurate.
First of all let's get two things straight.
1. There are different types of Aim Assist.
2. Range=Aim Assist=Bullet Magnetism=Accuracy
The higher these stats, the better the weapon is.
Why was Thorn OP? Why was Hawkmoon so easy to get Headshots before the patch? Because of Send it/Hammer Forged. (Increases RANGE and ACCURACY) Basically it increased Range which made headshotting from a distance possible AND easier, it also increased Accuracy (Bullet Magnetism/Aim assist).
Weapons have something called Bullet Magnetism. Which is most noticable on primaries. What this is is basically how 'forgiving' the game is when you miss the head by a little bit. This is why Thorn was a headshot Machine!
The Hand Canon blanket nerf that everyone thinks is overkill for example. What Bungie did was reduce the accuracy of Hand Canons OVERALL.... Have you noticed point blank shots completely missing? Or shots that would've hit before not hitting at all, or bodyshots registering as headshots?! This is what is happening, hand canons now have reduced accuracy and the 'bullet magnetism' is less forgiving. Rapidly firing a Hand Canon further reduces accuracy. Making them only ideal in very close range situations.
Now to Snipers. To me snipers have very little Magnetism but have significantly higher 'Crosshair Slowdown'. This when you hover your reticle over an enemy and it 'sticks' onto them. Primaries have this too, but at a much weaker extent. Hidden Hand FURTHER increases this 'stick' by an unknown amount. The better the range of a sniper, the better this 'stick' will be from range.
Do you notice how sometimes your aim is pulled by another player jumping across another? To explain this, you need to understand the concept of HOW your crosshair slowdown pulls it. There is an area of an enemy I like to call 'hit detection area' (my own weird personal language). Basically when you hover over an enemy, your crosshair will slow down. Try it on the Spider Tank/Goliath Tank for maximum effect. If you shoot anywhere in this area, the target will be damaged. The game purposely slows down your aim in this area. Now go to patrol and scope in on head level. Do not move your scope and do not shoot, just ADS perfectly still. Wait for a Dreg to strafe past your center and you will see the 'stick' happen. If your sniper has High Aim Assist, it will stick so hard onto that Dreg that your screen will move slightly as your crosshair passes his 'hit detection area' even though you are standing perfectly still.
Now imagine in crucible, you are aimed at someone. You hover over an enemy head and it sticks, it's perfect, he's not moving, he doesn't notice you, poor bastard is AFK. You are about to make the shot, however an enemy player jumps over him, making the hit detection area OVERLAP with your target, one is standing still, however one is moving quickly just like that Dreg was on Patrol. And the mobile targer 'pulls' your crosshair. IMPORTANT: People are confusing this for Auto aim. It is NOT auto aim. It feels like Auto aim, but it's not.
This is the exact reason why 1000-Yard stare feels so smooth. (Note how I don't say easy)
Base Aim assist of 56+15 from Shortgaze makes it's natural aim assist very high. Combined with Rifled Barrel which increases Range, your Crosshair is guaranteed to 'stick' onto enemies very well. This doesn't make it a headshot machine, or some magical noob sniper. It simply makes guiding your reticle over the enemy heads 'stickier'. Snipers like kjhovey and realkrafty take full advantage of this and sweep scope.
Hope this cleared things up.

2 RepliesWrong. Aim assist DOES effect bullet magnatism on snipers. This has been proven

5 RepliesEdited by Val44: 11/4/2015 11:12:17 AMOMG the salt *where is my bucket* You f**** hardscoping-wussiecamper !!! No you non-primary-shotgun-srub !!! The salt is real and it is hillarious. I use both depending on the enemy . I even switch during matches when i change tactics. Both require skill to be considered good options. They require a different type of skill though. A sniper will need good target aquisition and know the sniperspots well. The shotgunner will need to have great movement skill and situational awareness . the whole discussion is so childish because no matter if you´re sniping or shotgunning you should always appretiate a counterpart on your team (especially in trails) as it makes your own job alot easier enganging the enemy at both ranges at the same time. TL;dr : just get along kids .

I never notice aim assist. So I'll just use my Stillpiercer... I'll use any decent impact sniper with a low low zoom scope.
-
I hate aim assist when I'm not ADS'ing. Try to throw a grenade and something hops across my crosshairs and the tripmine sails away from everything. Terrible mechanics.
-
2 RepliesSLH short gaze adds +20 aim assist
-
7 RepliesThen why do I find high aim assist Snipers much easier to use than low aim assist ones? Aim assist in general needs to be toned down on snipers. In an ideal world, it'd be removed from the game entirely but then the noobs will cry and cry and cry and cry.

3 RepliesHow do aim assist bullets kill me behind walls every time ?
-
2 RepliesSo let me get this straight, a sniper with the Longview scope, snapshot and hidden hand is king? (1000 yd stare?)
-
"Slowing the reticle down" = drags the reticle slightly as well. It doesn't have bullet magnetism but reticle magnetism is basically the same damn thing. Slide scope onto target (moving or anything), shoot. The drag means it's easy as hell to hit. Also why shooting someone running is so easy.

15 RepliesEdited by DrEubanks: 11/5/2015 5:32:46 PMFalse Aim assist functions the same across all weapon types. That's why Her Benevolence was popular and now 1000 yard stare is popular.

2 RepliesThank you for this. So tired of reading ignorant posts crying about aim assist. Just nubs that can't snipe so they hang onto anything that can be used as an excuse. Reality is you need to get gud ya blueberries.

Bump this . Sick of try hards justifying why they die . They hang onto this aim assist stat like its a magic bullet or something

I'm calling bullshit. Aim assist is ridiculous on this game. Perfect example. I never snipe and I go into trials trying to do something because I keep getting murdered by snipers and have multiple matches of quick double and even a triple kill. I am NOT a sniper but with the help this game gives you any one can be top tier with some skill and a lot of repetition
-
1 ReplyI hate aim assist. It usually makes me aim on the next person walking by instead of the one I'm aiming for
-
1 ReplySo basically: Bullet magnetism=\=Aim assist
-
4 RepliesYou legend. Now the scrubs can stop complaining

5 RepliesActually that's slightly older information. Yes, aim assist does relate to reticle slowdown movement, but it also includes the ''Target acquisition'' stat, which is related to bullet magnetism. And guess what? Both of those stats are also tied to the ''range'' stat on snipers. I have noticed that it's also tied to the range stat on hand cannons, but NOT on pulse rifles and to a lesser degree auto rifles. The difference here that people should be noting is the importance of the range stat with HC's and Snipers (and a lesser degree auto rifles) and their impact on bullet magnetism (target acquisition). The silly thing introduced in 2.0 is actually a 'bloom' effect (most notably on HC's) where the more shots you fire in rapid succession, the greater your target acquisition decreases until it's reset (through time, typically). The TLDR: Hand Cannon needs to be fired REALLY slow and deliberate in order for consecutive critical hits to hit with assistance from target acquisition, because that base value shrinks the faster you fire. For snipers, the range stat has a larger effect on target acquisition than the base aim assist values on the weapons. If you want to land more snipes, combine high AA snipers with high range.

2 RepliesEdited by Strider: 11/3/2015 11:20:04 PMHaha and the slower reticle movement doesn't help? Sure there isn't bullet magnetism like with primary weapons but you're foooling yourself if you think that the slower reticle movement isn't drastically helping you.
