Why having to relevel exotics is so infuriating.

So I've been doing a lot of thinking. Like many people I was not pleased by this week's announcement regarding changes to exotics, and like many others, I was not mollified by the notion that the weapons we'd be trading in for would have 302 attack. Some people pointed out that in MMOs, when an expansion is released with a new level cap, or even when new gear is introduced, it makes old gear obsolete. Now, I'm also an avid swtor player, and they just released a new expansion this past week with a new level cap, and sure enough, my old top tier gear can now be crafted, and is only really good for leveling to the new cap and maybe the story/normal version of the new raids. Yet I wasn't particularly bothered by this. So what was the difference? Part of it was PR. Bioware has had 3 years of mistakes to learn from when it comes to dealing with a community. They spent the past months getting everyone excited and doing weekly 90 minute streams to explain changes which might concern players. Another part was simply time. The old level cap in star wars has been in place for 18 months. We were ready for new stuff. But neither of those really rang true. Then I realized the difference. It was in how the two games approach gear. In swtor, all your gear is much like legendary gear now. It's all stats, and the new expansion will simply have gear with higher stats. That's why new tower gear that puts you as high level as raid gear doesn't bug me. But weapons are a whole other ball game. In swtor all your damage comes from class specific abilities, and it's those classes that really differentiate your playstyle and capabilities. Each are different and gear just makes those abilities more powerful. The classes in Destiny are very similar in comparison. But what separates people are the weapons. You don't notice this much with green and blue weapons, but with legendary and ESPECIALLY exotics this becomes easy to see. The elemental damage on raid primary weapons, fatebringer's firefly perk, VoC's full auto, Gjallarhorn's wolf pack rounds, Ice Breaker's infinite ammo. These are game changers. That's why putting down my VoC is going to hurt more than my raid helmet, and that's why having to regrind gjallarhorn just strikes a nerve. Because it's not like I'm just trading in gear for more powerful gear. It's like my characters worked hard for certain capabilities and now I have to do it all again, assuming I can get the trade in. In swtor, while they use these chances for major balancing changes, and might reshuffle certain things, for the most part I'm as powerful on day one of the expansion as I am on the day before. If I have to go re-earn a key ability, well that's annoying, but I'm going to be playing all the new content and will naturally get those things back, plus the new stuff, without focusing exclusively on that. More importantly, every activity with the exception of ranked PvP which I could do the day before I can still do the day after, but all my time is gonna be spent doing the new stuff. Destiny isn't like that. In order to bring my weapons to the new cap, I'll have to wait for xur, invest heavily, then focus on releveling that exotic, most likely through the same old bounties. When I do this, attack level aside I'm starting from the beginning. It's not like my gear just became inferior to newer better gear. It's as if, if I wanted to reach the new level cap I'd have to completely reset my class to the beginning and level again, go back and do the same old before finally getting to move forward with the new stuff. And that's what feels like such disrespect. I've said before it would be one thing if we were simply earning more exp on already leveled weapons, but we're completely resetting everything about these weapons that makes them special, with the most likely avenue for making them good again the old bounties, and we can't even do the old stuff we used to till we hit the cap again. Now let me be clear. That's all my feelings on the matter. I can't speak to others, and I'm sure someone will tell me why my perceptions are wrong. But they are still the perceptions I have, so deeply engrained I had to really think about it to even really nail down what they were. But as best I can figure that's why this change, taken with everything else, bothers me so much while the swtor level cap raise doesn't make me bat an eye.

  • Personally bro.. You need to remember that it is just something for you to do.. honestly its not like you have to. And it only makes a difference according to your level.. I am level 32.. And I never upgraded my gjallahorn.. But I went on my warlock who is only level 30.. And I noticed that with my unupgraded gjallahorn I cant knock crota down as level 30 and unupgraded gjallahorn in two shots.. But I recently noticed that with an upgraded one I can as my warlock.. As 31 you cant even knock cota down with 2 shots.. I sit at level 32 and i am so bored and never get on destiny ever anymore...

    • I have an issue that I want resolved. I can explain this best through an example. I have a Plan C; never been used. I have a friend who has a maxed-out Plan C. With this update, we can both go to Xur and purchase a new Plan C. My question is since my friend already had a leveled-up Plan C, will his new Plan C take less time to level-up than mine? If not, than what's the point of ever using exotic weapons if, with every new update, you have to waste time and materials on them. I am completely put off by this. If I thought the game was repetitive now...

        • You know, the idea of re-leveling my exoitics didn't really bother me when I first heard. But I just went through the process of resetting my ice-breaker on the last xur and then re-leveling it to 331 damage as well as getting to lvl 31. And, right now, I just feel drained. I don't think I have the energy to go through with re-leveling even just my favorite exotics. Destiny has burnt me out.

        • Armor starts off with 30 light just like it's fully upgraded and weapons start with 302 dmg and level quicker than before. I don't think it's that bad of a tradeoff

          • Waiting till they fix it before I play anymore destiny. If they dont well, oh well, idc I'll instantly lv them up to 401-433 attack at the fourth dlc. And spend 1/4 the amount of resources.

          • I just wish they would confirm if the Vex Mythlocast will be upgraded. What's the point in having, at one time the most powerful gun in the game and now legendaries are more powerful.

            • I stopped playing when I felt like there was nothing left to do. Now looking at the expansion... It just looks like chores. I do not want to "reset my guns". I just wanted more content, but they keep cramming those stupid bounties down my throat. Leveling my exotic weapons was my least favorite thing. It's a shame to see they are making me do it all over again. "But your number will be higher!!" They say.... Not happening.... Not for me anyways

              • They relevel very quickly and make your current exotic even more powerful, I don't see how its a negative thing, we've been told it takes very little XP and very little resources.

                  • This is actually good considering most investment games like Destiny, mmos and such don't even let you upgrade your guns. When new expansions drop, everything is obsolete. So at least we get to keep out favorite guns and they will still be relevant

                          • I was pissed at first, but I've changed my opinion. Look at it this way...would you rather have an underpowered Icebreaker that eventually won't be able to make a dent in level 32/33 baddies, or would you like a new, stronger Icebreaker that continues to kick a$$ the way you've come to expect it to? I know my answer.

                                • i was one of the players totally pissed about the exotic reset. i hate the idea of regrinding my exotics every dlc. i dont like that players new to the game will jump into lvl30 vendor armor which invalidates the 3 mos of work i put into the game. while mmos like wow make it easier for new players to level compared to how much effort the same amount of leveling required the original wow players. the new wow players still have to climb the same ladder the original wow players climbed just faster. in 2 years a new player will do the story, hit lvl20 then put on lvl60 vendor gear. but.... 1) at least new players will have to find thru rng the exotics i was able to build up over a long time. so ill always have the exotic advantage. unless someday xur sells all exotics all the time for 5 glimmer. then ill lose my last piece of advantage 2) at least the exotics i have found will be relevant. rather than obsolete. that would make the dlc a true reset 3) mats are dropping at a much higher rate. without farming i have ammassed a large number of mats. shards, spinmetal, motes etc their building up in my vault at a much higher rate. 4) that plus new exotics will require fewer mats AND less experience to level up so overall i dont like the reset. but within a short time ill have recovered and start making forward progress. which just leaves my last gripe being how fast new players will catch up and having to do this again every 3 mos

                                  • I only really have two issues with the reset. 1. That we have to erase our current progress for a weapon that needs NOTHING other than a few more damage upgrades. Was it really that hard for them to just put in a few more upgrade slots? 2. No warning to save up those precious exotic shards. I almost wasted one on my thunderlord before I remembered that it would've been for nothing.

                                    • I think you have the wrote g idea about leveling. First Xur will provide the option to lvl a selection of items each week. Not only what he is selling that week. You do not need to rebuy your exotics. One shard to reset and enhance. One shard to max. 14 total for each exotic you wish to upgrade. It is messed up to do it this way though. It is how bungie tries to make up for lack of content. Everyone hates them for this. Ascendant energy and shards become useless because the only gear with having comes from the raid or is exotic. We should at least be able to trade in energy or shards for exotic shards.
