Caring is probably better than not caring, in all fairness, because without caring you can't be happy, because there's nothing to be happy about. So if you want to be happy you should care. Sure nothing really 'matters', but pretending stuff matters is what life's all about. If you want to go around not caring, you may as well be dead.

Because people who do care will care that you don't think the same way they do, and these people will happily make laws that prevent you from actions that you enjoy, even if the actions are harmless.
