Theory: What if we lose?

We've stomped our way across the system slaying nearly everything we meet yet we aren't prepared? What if we save the city from the Almighty only to lose it in the fight with the darkness? The last time they fought they tore the system apart, now there's more of them? Maybe we lose. Maybe we're saved by our allies of the singularity? Would be a cool place to visit though getting out may suck.

      • Lose to what though? That’s one of the major overarching, narratively, with this season. There isn’t even an enemy. Just an inanimate object floating through the sole system that we had months to board, investigate and come up with a way to initiate a change of a degree or two in its course then it’s the threat has passed. Instead we thought that engaging with a hyper advanced AI with its own, questionable at best motives, which we barely understand, to try to convince it to enable its defence systems which have lain dormant for centuries, was a more efficient use of our efforts. Seems like we left an awful lot up to both chance and a being on a higher branch of evolution than ourselves. But yeah that’s been the problem for a while now hasn’t it? Having no tangible or developed main antagonist to focus each seasons progress just leaves everything just “meh”, and is what drives the overwhelming sentiment of “bounty simulator” that everybody feels now. It’s all well and good having a long-game narrative at the core of the game but without the short term relatable threat with a sympathetic antagonistic focus, it all just descends into mindless, immersion-less drivel like we have now.

I hope we lose. I hope we get a threatening enemy for once. From a story standpoint we’ve never actually felt like we were going to lose. We always knew we would win, the light would find us, blah blah. And don’t bring up the red legion attack, we got our light back in the literal first story mission after the prologue and killed ghaul at the end of the 3 hour campaign. We were back in the tower after and it was like nothing ever happened. Same with the scorn, sure they killed cayde but we killed them all in a 3 hour campaign and a strike. Halo is another bungie game. The antagonists of that game are plotting to wipe out literally all life in the universe for religious purposes and the climax of the series (at least the original series) ends with you stopping it with not a moment to spare. I don’t want to pipe ride Halo but that is good storytelling. That is threat. That makes you feel weak, and like your character in the story matters.

          • We might. If there’s to be another collapse, it makes sense. Splintered guardians, fighting each other. A good opportunity to bring the factions back, too. One faction for each side and one that remains neutral. Story wise it’s great, but if they truly go the whole PvEvP route it’ll make me not want to actually play it, but rather just watch/read it.

            • The only thing that pulled me into D2 was the prospect of dying. Turns out, we didn't die. I would have the same expectation, now, if Bungie makes it look like we lose in a cut-scene or beta. Chekhov's gun can only be reskinned so many times by the end of the play.

              • <I'm assuming that will be the case when the entire Armada descends on us. Consider it Red War 2, but with clear differences that will be easily noticeable. Instead of getting close to winning, we will be nowhere close at all. Inevitably we'll come back, but that will take time.>

Eh. There probably will be a moment where we lose and it'll be as well-constructed and written at the same quality as everything else so far. Objectively terrible. At least it'll be funny.

                          • The actual numbers in Destiny are rather unclear, but it seems on the grand scale humanity has been getting its butt kicked for centuries. Ever since the Traveler appeared in our solar system. The recent string of "victories", many recently attributed to our respective Guardian, have bucked the long string of defeats. Even then, it has mostly been just avoiding annihilation. This should be different, though. This time it is the Traveler's counterpart. The Traveler supposedly represents good and light. But it causes unnatural change through forced evolution, mutation, and even undeath. It took away the Eliksni's ability to survive without Ether, a substitute for the Traveler's power. I am not entirely sure we are on the "right" side at this point. Humans are not the only ones at risk here, either. The Darkness isn't just after the Traveler, it seems to want to end all to start over again. I have a strange feeling it will come down to the combined efforts of Humans, Eliksni, and Cabal to pull our collective butts from the darkness. Even then, the Nine and Vex will likely have to provide aid as well. I would imagine the Hive will side with the Darkness, planning to die last. Speaking of the Vex, they should have seen this coming and done something to prevent it. Shouldn't they? Unless that is what they have been trying to do and we keep thwarting them... Or maybe it is just unavoidable.
