DeeJ is not a developer. He's a Community Manager.
But you are right that its a problem when the guys who actually are the developers are either out of touch with the game in the wild....or out of touch with the community.
Jon Weisznewski was out of touch....and the game is still trying to clean up the mess he helped to create for it. To his credit---as a person---he acknowledged that in an interview two years ago. Around the time of Warmind, and the game was just starting to turn the corner from D2s disastrous launch.
He said,
"The way that Destiny 2 launched (in terms of game play) was my fault. I thought I knew what the players wanted. But I was wrong. Now, when I come up with ideas that I think the players will like I'm not so sure."
IOW, he'd acknowledged that he made a mistake...and was humbled (in a good way) by that mistake. I think he'll make a great addition to wherever he is now. But he was the wrong guy to be working on Destiny. When you listened to him talk in interviews it was PAINFULLY clear that he either had NO idea about---or respect for---power-fantasy games, and what motivates people to play them.
All he could see was his own wish to recreate Halo's PVP success---complete with e-sports---and it blinded him to everything else.
