I had a rather interesting conversation with someone about Marvel and DC

I was bored in school today and decided to ask a random classmate a simple question. “Hey, which do you prefer more? Marvel or DC?” His response? “DC, marvel sucks ass. They try to make as many shitty movies as possible while DC makes good movies.” I can’t tell you how painful that was to hear. I’m both a Marvel and DC fan (yes, that’s a thing) but what he just said is just....oof. Especially with the more recent movies. Infinity War: 85+ ratings and over 2 Billion racked up Justice league: 60- ratings, and I don’t even know how much money they made. Not to mention, Marvel has had some more likable characters in recent movies than the DC movies. Wonder Woman and Aqua-man feel like the only exceptions for me. Anyhoo, figured I’d share that gem of a conversation.

  • I agree that newer DC movies have sucked. But can we all agree the Original Dark Night Trilogy was amazing?

  • In some sense, I prefer Marvel (especially the movies), because they do embrace the bad sides of their characters, while DC tries to make them too... great. The MCU shows their characters as deeply flawed (Cap's insane devotion to principles, Tony's overbearing sense of thinking he's right, Strange's tendency to act like the smartest man in the room, etc)

I enjoyed Man of Steel and Dark Knight(because of the joker) other than that haven't enjoyed a DC movie since Keaton was Batman. I like Iron Man, Thor, and Deadpool. Other than that I agree that they make too many movies. It's always like
oh there's another one? I'll catch it when it comes out on Netflix... If I get around to it then
• I think DC has by far the better source material to work with. DC has the best heroes, the best villains, and the best stories to begin adapting. For me, almost every problem with the DCEU thus far has been Warner Bros' fault. Man of Steel is an excellent movie. I have nothing bad to say about that. Batman V Superman I need to watch again, but from what I remember it was a narrative mess. It tried to tell too many different stories instead of just picking one and focusing on that. The problem here is that a bunch of Marvel fanboys decided it was "too dark" and that that was the movie's biggest problem. That was bullshit, but WB listened. And because they listened, we got Suicide Squad. It should have been a dark, gritty character drama with Jared Leto's Joker as the main villain. The original script, before SS was rewritten a scillion times, actually had Scarecrow as the main villain, which also would have been awesome. But I digress. Suicide Squad's biggest problem was that instead of a dark, gritty, character focused crime drama that focused on developing Deadshot and Harley Quinn, we got a comedy movie with a shit villain and too many characters to reasonably develop. By far, this film's biggest issue was its attempt at being a comedy, and it's superpowered villain as opposed to a more grounded, realistic villain. Wonder Woman was great, but again the villain should have been a more grounded, realistic one tied into the war, instead of a literal god of war. Justice League again was WB's fault. The main issue with this movie was that it felt incredibly rushed. And had it been a half hour, or even an hour longer, it probably would have been great. But instead WB decided "no one likes long movies" and hacked it up so it fit in the 90 minute mark. Also - Batman's solo movie should have released before a Justice League film. I haven't seen Aquaman yet. Also, it's worth noting that I don't hate Marvel. It's just very painful to be a huge DC fan, and for that movie franchise to not be the absolutely fantastic game changer that it should have been. I have nothing against Marvel, I just prefer dark and gritty superhero stories to the comedic stuff Marvel primarily pushes out. This is why I like Logan and Venom the best out of Marvel's movies. It annoys me that WB keeps trying to force DC films to be funny and lighthearted. They really shouldn't be. And we all know that DC shouldn't release comedy movies anyway. *cough* Batman and Robin *cough* I hope that when we eventually get that solo Batman movie, it is dark, gritty, and grounded in realism. And I hope it does really well, so WB stop thinking "comedy is the future" or whatever.

    • People aren't rational. They're emotional. ...and sometimes people will hold onto ideas that make no rational sense, simply because those ideas make them feel good....or help them avoid feeling bad. Like you, I like both DC and Marvel....though I've always favored Marvel. DC has the biggest heroes....but Marvel has the deepest bench, and the best teams. The most recent Batman trilogy was amazing....but the DCEU has been lackluster because that Universe tried to reap the rewards without laying the foundation. Infinity War was the culmination of a carefully crafted plan that started with the first Iron Man movie. You cared about the team....because Marvel and Disney took the time to let you get to know the major heroes. The DCEU tried to rush that process. Batman was poorly cast (Ben Affleck is no one's superhero). Superman was reasonably cast, but poorly written. The Flash was so poorly cast AND written that he was almost a caricature. Only Wonder Woman and Aquaman were well-written. With the casting of Wonder Woman being an excellent decision....and the casting of Aquaman being a stroke of genius. The problem is while in the DCEU, you only have two characters that are well-written and cast....in the Marvel EU....EVERY character is well-cast and well-written. Because Disney and Marvel understand their heroes....and pick actors whose personas FIT the heroes they play. From Robert Downey, Jr playing Tony Stark....to Benedict Cumberbatch playing Steven Strange....they just keep knocking it out of the park with the casting choices. To the point where you just shake your head and think: "These guys don't even need to **act**. They'll just need to show up on set and be themselves." Downey Jr, IS Tony Stark. Cumberbatch IS Steven Strange.. Lastly I think---because they understand their heros so well----they make better writing decisions. Characters like Superman and Captain America are more like ICONS and symbols than actual human beings. Being so "perfect" that they make for uninteresting **people** and characters. The DCEU made the mistake of trying to make Superman "grittier" and "dark" to make him more interesting....and just wound up breaking the character. Superman wound up moping around like an angsty 15 year old who just broke up with his first girlfriend. Dark-and-brooding Batman works. Someone who is dark-and-brooding and has the powers of a Greek GOD...is enough to make you shit yourself. It makes the character anxiety provoking at best. Terrifying at worst. I think Marvel made the better decision to use Captain America's persona as a foil. To leave it intact...but use it as a friction point and a contrast against our modern self-absorption and cynicism. He is a constant reminder of how we fall short of our stated ideals....and his conflict with the America we've become makes him interesting.

      • Imo. Marvel has made a better shared universe, but I'd take the dark knight films and watchmen over any marvel film, I don't think they'd ever pull off a film like that.

      • I prefer Marvel, of the two. But I do enjoy DC. I grew up watching BTAS and the X-man animated series. To this day I still think those two shows had the best theme songs. But yeah, DC is in a tight spot for movies right now.

      • Comics wise, I enjoy both. Both have some really awesome story lines and some not so awesome ones. I do tend to lean more towards Marvel because it was the X-Men that got me interested into comics. As for the movies, Marvel hands down. DC only really has one successful movie franchise in the Dark Knight trilogy and that's about it. Marvel played it smart by interweaving each movie together to tell an even larger story with each individual movie telling its own while simultaneously progressing the over arcing one. DC wanted to do the same but rushed their story without ever introducing the characters properly or even really build up to the first Justice League. It's really disappointing too because if DC just took their time to plan it out it would've been a truly awesome thing. So many different styles of characters with their own style of movie. Superman with the big action, Flash with tense edge-of-your-seat suspense, Batman with the crime thriller, Cyborg with the high tech action, Wonder Woman with the WWII timing and fantasy, and Aquaman with the stunning deep sea adventure. All leading up to the first Justice League and the first hint of the big bad, Darkseid. I would be sooo excited for each movie DC would put out if they did it right. If.

          • IMO,if your a fan of the books and genre, the argument shouldn't exist. I will say that I'm stoked whenever a new character is brought to the forefront. I'm pumped for Shazam!, as it should bring the DCEU in a different direction. I'm interested in how Captain Marvel will impact the MCU and I'm super pumped for Joaquin Pheonix as the Joker and hopefully Wonder Woman 1984 will introduce....
Martian Manhunter
• Personally I love the MCU (I have high hopes for it’s releases this year) but I don’t hate the DC films. Haven’t watched Man of steel yet. So can’t really give an opinion. BVS wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be. Same for Justice League. Suicide squad wasn’t the best though. I’m glad they have James Gunn on the film but let him have creative freedom Warner Bros.

              • <MCU has better movies but there are parts of the DC movies that I've enjoyed. Wonder Woman and Man of Steel were good IMO and Aquaman is a fun popcorn movie. Music for BvS was good regardless of movie quality (a very big "Meh"). Right now Marvel and DC seem to be tied for shows. Both have pretty damn good shows.>

                  • I personally felt like aquaman was a bad movie. It felt like they tried to cram too much plot into too little time to me. Plus, there were several things that just didn't make sense to me and had to be explained by a comic fan. I would probably prefer Justice League over Aquaman, but maybe I was just in a bad mood when I saw it and that's why I didn't like it. There's really no denying that Marvel has better movies, at least live-action ones. Animated ones, I'm not too sure.

Marvel makes better live action movies. DC makes better animated movies. And thus is the way of the universe. I like both but I actually generally prefer DC stories. The original Justice League animated series has yet to be topped in my opinion.

I enjoy both. I personally think the MCU is awesome, as is the DC universe. However, when it comes to movies, DC has been on a shitty movie spree. The TV show Gotham, however, is one of the best interpretations of the DC universe covering the origins of many characters and it all fits well with the established universe.
