If the bus stops and activates it’s stop sign, but the sign is behind me I can’t see it, is that breaking the law? I in U.S.A by the way. Illinois too.

Speed up.

If you are traveling the same direction and the bus is in front or beside you, you must stop. If you are traveling the same direction and the bus is behind you, as in you look im your rearview mirror and see the bus is coming to a stop, no, you do not stop. If you are traveling in the opposite direction and the bus is coming towards you and stops, you must stop. If you are traveling in opposite directions and you look in your rear view mirror and see the bus you passed is now coming to a stop, you do not need to stop.

13 RepliesEdited by Val Dryka: 10/9/2018 4:06:22 PMThere is a reason for those stop signs on buses.. it's for idiots who don't have enough common sense to watch out for kids. Your vicinity to the actual "sign" is irrelevant in the situation. When a school bus stops you should too and make sure no child is leaving the bus before you go.

Nothing like that in the uk. So not a clue. Logically I'd say no, you are already parallel to the bus so you need to safely complete the overtake. But I heard you are not aloud to fill the back of a car blocking the rear view mirror even tho many vehicles like vans don't even have a rear view mirror.. is that true btw? If so logic is kinda out the window .

Technically no, but that's a rather vague scenario. Several years ago I passed a bus that had pulled over to a turn right lane where there happens to be a farm house. I was directly behind the bus approaching this particular intersection, same one I go through every day for work. As the bus pulled over to the right, it began slowing down, but no lights were present. I passed in in the straight lane and we both were sitting there at the 4 way stop sign. I didn't think anything more of it, but later that week I received a warning from the sheriff's department telling me I passed a bus that was in the process of picking up children with it's red lights on. There were no red lights present the entirety of the time that the bus was in my field of vision. But apparently the bus was stopped picking up kids on the right side, and I'm on the left of the bus where I could not see anything. I just did a normal traffic stop and went on my way. Had I been fined for it, I'd have fought it. Even if it's lights were on, the stop sign they swing out was above my car's line of sight. So I had no way of knowing. Buses normally have yellow lights that come on well before they are about to stop. This one never displayed anything. My friend has been a bus driver for a long time in the same district, and he told me that the drivers make a deal with kids at the beginning of the year to watch for the plate numbers of people who do pass them illegally. A couple kids have been hit by cars illegally speeding up and passing buses around here before.

3 RepliesIf you're already passed the bus I believe it is fine to go. You dont stop after you passed a stop sign, do you?

3 RepliesYes. You must stop whenever that sign comes out. No matter what. Even if you already passed the bus. If you can see it behind you, you must stop

Perfectly balanced as all things should be
have you ever had the random feeling that you should stop? It’s because somewhere a bus activated it’s stop sign
