I have both masterworked sniper and ship. Both take about 3 weeks to fully unlock if you do the heroic weekly. The scaling damage bonus based on your fire team leader's catalyst unlock progress really makes a difference, so make sure to take advantage of it. Some helpful tips: 1) Bring an exotic masterwork Polaris Lance if available -- the infinite ammo makes the last room much easier. 2) Get rid of the front three blight shields ASAP, or all of them if you have the DPS for it. 3) Ikelos shotgun and Wardcliff are great at quickly dropping blight shields.
