My Problem with "America First."

"First" implies a sequential order. America "First," then X second, then Y third, and so on. It follows the ideal that you have to fix your own house before you go trying to help someone else. "Secure your own mask first before..." you know the rest. But the problem is that I don't think we'll ever reach the point where we get to helping anyone else. Not with this attitude. I think there will always be some national crisis that we are trying to fix. And, so, instead of "America First," it's more like "America Only." And what does that really mean? Well, it's dangerous nationalism. It completely throws out the window the fact that we're all human beings. Suddenly, of you're not on this side of the fence, you don't matter. That kind of selfish, callous ideology is dangerous. It is a slippery slope fueled by greed and fear. Fear of the other. Fear of losing power. Fear of a day coming when we can't fulfill all of our selfish desires. But as long as we're happy, it's to hell with everyone else. That is the true sentiment at the heart of "America First."

  • Americans should have a zeal for their homeland the way Russians do for theirs.

  • What I've noticed is that many people misconstrue love of one's homeland for love of one's state antagonist. This holds for the inverse statement, too. Some people misconstrue contempt for one's state antagonist as contempt for one's homeland. Any kind of manipulation relying on the idea that paying taxes is patriotc is an example of the state preying on this mistake people make.

  • America first means that the interests of the citizens of America are put before the interests of the citizens of other countries by the American government. Why would Americans ever want a government that puts their interests second?

The problem with putting the interests of foreign nations over one's homeland isn't a problem concerned with nationalism or identity, but a problem concerned with the ignoring of more pressing issues on local soil that are not being addressed by the government. These issues revolve around 3 things: jobs, infrastructure and healthcare. This was actually the crux of the argument for voting for Trump over Clinton, because his rhetoric spoke of job creation; of protectionism: of populist legislation that would focus on the American people more than foreign powers in the Middle-East or third-world African countries.

    •
It’s a great brainwashing process which goes very slow and is divided into four basic stages. The first stage being “demoralization”. It takes from 15 to 20 years to demoralize a nation. Why that many years? Because this is the minimum number of years required to educate one generation of students in the country of your enemy exposed to the ideology of [their] enemy. In other words, Marxism-Leninism ideology is being pumped into the soft heads of at least 3 generation of American students without being challenged or counterbalanced by the basic values of Americanism; American patriotism. The result? The result you can see — most of the people who graduated in the 60’s, dropouts or half-baked intellectuals, are now occupying the positions of power in the government, civil service, business, mass media, and educational systems. You are stuck with them. You can’t get through to them. They are contaminated. They are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern [alluding to Pavlov]. You can not change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information. Even if you prove that white is white and black is black, you still can not change the basic perception and the logic of behavior. In other words [for] these people the process of demoralization is complete and irreversible. To rid society of these people you need another 15 or 20 years to educate a new generation of patriotically minded and common sense people who would be acting in favor and in the interests of United States society.
Rome was so successful because it didn't give a flying fuck about people outside of its borders. I'm not saying countries shouldn't help others, just that it is in a country's own best interests to put the needs and welfare of its own people above the needs of those in other lands and nations.

      • Also, why should I care for others first? Don't give me this hippie liberal crap. We send millions to Africa every year in humanitarian aid but nothing ever improves over there. Why are we doing it then?

If you are American, I would think you put the United States before any other country. If you give so many shits about other countries, go live there.

            • You hit the nail on the head. So many "America First" supporters don't give a rats @$$ about any other person on this planet. They don't realize at all that they are not the only ones on the planet and just because they were born in America does not make them some kind of special breed of human that warrants them being "first". You're not special because you are American. You are a human, like the other 7 billion people on the planet. You are not meant to be "first". No one is. Humanity first.

              • Simple questions... Why should I care about someone else's problems when no one gives a -blam!- about mine? Why should I care about other nations over my own? these nations do nothing for me so what's the point? Why should America send money to improve poorer nations when we have a large homeless population? shouldn't we take care of our own or are they not important to you? How many refuges do you have living in your home? if you answer 0 then I ask why should your family come first over them?

                • Disagree. There is a difference between Nativism....or blind ISolationism.... ...and simply starting to act like a COUNTRY again, and not just a "free market". Which is why we keep getting screwed on these Free Trade agreements. We keep acting like a market, while everyone else remembers that they are COUNTRIES first.

                  • America does help other countries. What are you taking about. If you're referring to when you hear people say it, it's in reference to their belief that our government and society in general should focus put Americans first before people from outside of the us.

                  • For the sake of "Humanity", please lead by example, give up everything you own and donate to others. Please live with those in need and show them the way to prosperity. Surprisingly no one does it.
