They don't have to be extravagant, there doesn't need to be a constant stream of gifts, but anything that conveys the message of "I am glad that you are a part of my life" is worth the time and effort. With that said, I don't mind that there are a handful of set dates on the calendar such as Valentine's Day, birthdays, anniversaries, and other "this date doesn't mean anything to anyone other than us" days scattered throughout the year. The gift, or the action, the gesture, the thought is what is important (in my eyes) not the price tag or even the date. It's about value, but not monetary value, rather showing how much you value them and how they make you feel.
