Contacting.... contacting .... hello? Helllo? HELLO!? Contacting ....

Unless you plan on actually provide some useful technical help I would like no other comments. We have the best available internet in Belgium. We have no other problems, not a single one. I have spend more hours on this problem then anything in the world. So please, if you give comments, make them contributional Hi, Let me start of by saying that in no way this is a rant or what so ever. It's just a post to see if someone has any idea about what might be going wrong. A little bit of back story, I'm working as a system / network engineer in my daily life, so not solving this one hurts. For the last year I've been a big fan of Destiny. Initially I started out on a Belgacom / Proximus line (VDSL) technology. So far so good, for a couple of months my experience could not have been better. Then I switched to Telenet (cable) provider with a (WIRELESS MODEM 3.0 (DOCSIS)) type of router. This is where all the problems began. For a couple of month's I noticed random contacting Destiny server events. After a couple of troubleshooting nights I started to notice that I had more issues when more devices where online, or new devices entered my Wifi network. My PS is connected onto the wired though. Months go by,problems come back and I start to suspect that a NAT issue is causing this. I suspect that the stupid router from the ISP (which I can't replace) does something fishy with NAT and perhaps even drops session. I decide to (oh yeah I know) place a router behind my router and work with double NAT. I placed a Asus DSL-N17U_WL N300 behind and placed it into the DMZ. From this moment on I start to notice a 100% (this is relative) improvement. I rarely experience connection issues and my happy Destiny live goes on ... until.... a friend of mine bought the game, has the same ISP provider and .... guess what? The same connection issues. However, for him the double NAT trick (he isn't using the Asus DSL-N17U_WL N300, this is next on the T-shoot list) it isn't working. I even rented a machine somewhere to create a proxy and see if this could improve his experience. But it couldn't, the shit is broken, and he keeps getting contacting Destiny ever half an hour or so. In Trials we can't even get matched with him getting kicked. Seriously Destiny, Bungie what the **** is this? I cannot comprehend that if those sessions get broken it's not possible to recover from it. What even drives me beyond going nuts is the fact that gameplay often goes on happy for 10 minutes before the actual kick happens. So yeah... I just don't get it anymore, it's frustrating and I would really like /u/coszmo or /u/Deej to give me any direction on where to go next with this problem, or a technical explanation about why those reconnects never ever ever work. I guess this turned out more into a rant then I wanted, but what can I say? I've spend countless hours in Destiny, and countless hours in trying to understand this problem. edit: Last but not least, I'm open for suggestions on how to continue from here on Report from reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/3silas/contacting_contacting_contacting_destiny_servers/

  • We've had some good information from Bungie, Thank you for this information. Back to the ISP with this information and lets see what they have to say!

    • So, simple answer for you. The router that they use is notoriously crap. What you are experiencing is load issues in your router/modem. Easiest way to solve it, if you can do it. Set your router to no Wifi, get a Booster that hard wires in. Use the booster to handle the wifi load. Help many of my friends. Also. Destiny is a hoooooooooog on network load.

    • Ok let me get this right..... You spend the first part of you post providing proof that the network issues are from either your network or the ISP and not Bungie's fault...... Then your friend has the same problem and you are mad at them?

      • Call your ISP and tell them to disable all router functions on your modem. Have it act as purely a modem, so your actual router gets a WAN IP address. Kinda does the same as your setup, but might help your friend.

        • I'm not sure how much ability you have to work with your gateway (modem/router combo). I can see from your post you suspect it as a cause, and sure enough networking equipment can cause a lack of stability and strength in a connection. Some hardware is just better than other hardware. Are you able to access the administrative settings of the gateway? Many two in one modem/router combinations can be placed in bridge mode. This mode essentially turns your gateway into a modem, so the routing protocols on the device are turned off, allowing it to just "pass" connection to your separate router, and get rid of any double NAT issues.

          • Have you tried port mirroring and running a packet capture yet?

              • Read up on upnp and gaming and packet loss and see if your provider can help analyze why you are losing packets First gaming uses upnp where it streams data with no buffering or retries ANYTHING that disrupts that stream will affect you Bandwidth does NOT mean you have a large pure upnp stream All of that other stuff Dmz port forwarding etc is just an attempt to give you a private upnp stream unaffected by other data or applications And by setting up the Dmz etc that only provides you with a direct connection to your ISp which is 1/2 the story Will you be able to do the analysis yourself no because it requires the ISp to collect data on their part as well as you All you can collect is the data leaving your machines what actually gets sent is obviously lost Sometimes it is a destiny server issue but then many more of us would have the same issues

Tell your ISP you don't fileswap and its just a video game. You'll notice if looking at live logs, your ISP throttles traffic on the upstream after 10mins or so...they think your are doing some illegal Napster junk or something.

                  • I can say with a lot of confidence a majority of connection problems in this game has something in common. Most users have some sort of 2 in 1 modem/router combo. Get rid of the 2 in 1 and you'll probably won't see an error code again.

                    • Hi l33trixor, I have read both of your posts here on BNET and can see that you have tried a lot of high level Network Troubleshooting to solve the issue. However, to establish a baseline of troubleshooting, can you attempt (or confirm you have attempted) to clear the console cache on the console experiencing the connectivity issue? Here is a guide on the recommended method of clearing console caches: https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Article/12539

                      • First comment on reddit by Vandal, the person in question with the problem. Just to give you an idea of what we tried. Hello everyone, I've been spending alot of time with Trixor to try & solve this problem without any luck so far. There are a couple of reasons we are looking at Bungie right now. The main one is probably that we are both IT professional and we have no idea what is going on. All the information we are getting is 'Weasel' or 'Catterpillar'... and thats it. If we would have more information to go on, we might be able to come up with a plan or some next steps, but we are simply guessing here. Trial and error... Moontumbler probably wants to say that the problem is with the ISP or their router, which I can agree on if we had any hard evidence of this. Destiny is the only game (or program in general) experiencing any form of connection issues whatsoever. Other than that I always get excellent latency, no lag spikes. Also keep in mind its a 200 mbps down / 25 mpbs up connection. It shouldn't even notice a game like destiny. If we are going to call our ISP and point out the problem, we need more evidence. Simple as that. Also, perhaps Bungie CAN help fix the problem, seeing this is the only program with any problem... if there is an issue, why can other games reconnect without me noticing and Destiny can't? The weird thing is, I get the 'contacting destiny servers...' error for 30-60 seconds before being booted out of the game. In the meanwhile, I can still shoot people / bots. I can see other players running around. Others can see my. My actions take effect in the game world... So I must have a connection, right? We have truly exhausted all our options with a trial and error approach and we are hoping Bungie can point us in the right direction for a solution. Thanks! Edit: things we allready tried: -Put PS4 on a seperate subnet & route -Put everything in a separe subnet, this ensures the ISP router has to do nothing but pass things along to 1 ip -Connect to a proxy server on both of the above configs + a 'normal' one (just the ISP router) -Firewalls on all systems completely disabled -> no difference -UPNP settings on/off on all of the above configs -Port forwarding as described in the destiny help section on all of the above configs -Place PS4 in 'DMZ' on all of the above configs PS4 is connected using a cabled 1 Gbit connection with <1 ms delay to the ISP router on every configuration (even double routing)
