Yes.. He was. Did you even read the Book of Sorrows? Oryx was originally a Hive female named Aurash. When she became a king, she underwent a metamorphosis into a male. The jelly just gives the females the ability to reproduce. The hive appear to be based off of bees.
Do you know the hive structure of bees? All regular worker bees are female, which make up the majority of the hive. The queen is fed special honey at a young larva stage and develops reproductive organs. Worker bees do not generally lay eggs, but if they do, those eggs are unfertilized, and eaten by the queen. Then we have all drone bees being male, and will always be fewer than worker bees. The queen lives much longer than workers and drones.
The Hive share many similarities with bees, and are probably much the same. But in Aurash's case, the worms gave her power over her physical form, "flesh" so that she could take the "king morph". This is probably not at all normal for pure Hive that are not worm hosts. Aurash's genetics were seemingly altered by the worms to match that of a "king morph", meaning she is now a male. From what I can tell, the worms alter the genetics of all Hive to allow them longer lives.

Read the last paragraph at least. That explains exactly what the situation is with Aurash/Oryx.

In this sense, Aurash was female. But, since she took the throne, 'she' became male, and the now-Oryx is male. Thus, the Taken King is an accurate title. Oryx is male. Aurash was not. But there is no more Aurash.
