How can people be so terrible at pvp?

Seriously? It baffles me. I'm not talking about the people who have like a 0.8kd, at least those sort of people can contribute to the game, I'm talking about those that get like between 0.2-0.4 how can they possibly enjoy playing it? I genuinely don't understand, I am not at all good in the crucible but some people seem to just be awful. Edit: Apologies, I rushed the original post between iron banner games and it didn't properly represent what I was asking, I wasn't actually getting on at people for having low Kds, it was more out of curiosity as to why e.g. Is it connection. Edit: people are mostly saying it's reaction times and connection. Others are saying that their tv has something to do with it and steep learning curves, anyone else have anything that they feel affects them?

  • It comes down to this, PvE is easier than PvP. AI bots are begging to be shot and there's usually a scripted formula to beat them with. And some enemies, one or two shots will do it. You rarely have to use cover unless you are trying to regen health and the bots are predictable. PvE rarely challenges your skill, only your ability to follow a formula. In PvP, there is no formula on how to be successful, it only comes with practice. People (usually) aren't begging to be shot and potentially have better weapon than you do. They are potentially smarter, stronger and faster. And with that, your situation is constantly changing. You can go from having a shoutout with one guardian to two of his friends coming behind him to help him and vice versa. This is partially why there was such an outrage at ToO and to a degree still is. PvE players don't want there skill tested. They want to sit in their bubble and shoot thralls and vandals, never daring to go into PvP, ignoring that it is part of Destiny and they are essentially cutting themselves off from half the game, then complain about how little longevity it has.

  • Well you have to consider that the PvP in this game is very different than most all games that have come before it. Kinda reminds me of Gears of War PvP how you need to play a certain style. I have gotten much better though since I used to be at a .8 to now a 1.2 kd lifetime. It still sucks but it takes time.

  • Sometimes you're going for a melee bounty and you're just getting shotgunned to high heaven. This really only an excuse for one game though

  • Well, that sure was nice. I'm about a 0.6-0.8 player (In IB vs. Thorns) an usually go 0.9 to 1.0 in regular PvP. (Clash) I still enjoy Crucible sometimes.

    • Latency being a big factor there will never be a fair crucible match... ever. There's always atleast one guy lagging his brains of and even getting kills cause bullets don't register when they should. Which is quite horrible in and FPS as you know and experience. Those cheap-asses over at bungie should invest in some dedicated servers. 500mill and all you could make was this buggy excuse of a tripple A game?? Srsly, that's sad and a big waste of money. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

        • I don't feel that my connection is a problem... I'm just bad. I lose my sense of direction, my accuracy and sighting is inconsistent, at best. That said, I enjoy it quite a bit. Mostly I feel bad when I hold a team back. Which is why I don't hop on the team chat channel. I know I suck, I don't need random strangers telling me how much I suck. It's just a game, it isn't that serious.

          • The first fps I played was cs:go and I have around 700 hours on that game, man KBM is so much better than controller I only got into destiny 4-5 months ago. Since then, I've played quite a lot of it. I even have a 3065 grimoire xD I reached level 20 by playing crucible only, I don't generally tend to play story on games (unless it's like the witcher or other RPGs), I haven't even completed the story on my warlock and now he's my main So yeah my KD is pretty damn terrible and I've messed around with an unascended nlb in ib this week, barely one shot head shots anything

My K/D was 0.2 when I first started Destiny. Destiny is my first ever console FPS. I'm used to playing with keyboard and mouse. It took me many months to dig myself out of that huge trench of horrible K/D games as I had to get used to playing with a controller. My K/D is now at 1.6. Still need to improve but I've gotten Mark of the Unbroken and most of the time I'm within the top 3 in my team unless I'm goofing around with No Land Beyond or something.

          • I'm not sure, all I can say is my overall kd is not 1.0, I'm trying to get it there as its like .93 but at least my warlocks kd is 1.0 haha... but anyways to the point I used to suck and hate thorn and last word until it finally dawned on me that if I get good with the op weapons I'll do good. If I play by myself or with certain people I'll usually come out on top or close to it, but at least one excuse for people who play and do bad, if I play with certain friends who are the same skill as me or better I won't do as good, since my team is good and can get kills as, or faster than I can. Also I tend to do bad under pressure so if someone is challenging me or something I'll just get flustered and do bad, lame I know but it's true. So that's also a thing. I have some friends who are great at pvp, then I have others who just suck, I continue to invite them because I enjoy their company and they continue to play because they enjoy the people they play with and just destinys pvp overall is interesting and fun to play.
If anything, let the scrubs continue to play, yes, less of a competition, but more of a target practice for us ;)
I'm one of those guys (so far), so I actively avoid PVP. But you will see me return because Bungie designed Destiny to force us to play PVP for good PVE weapons and armor. Here's what I had trouble with: Friend/Foe Identification Quick, is that guy in front of you an enemy? 1/2 second is too long. It takes practice to do this fast enough. Map Knowledge Where am I? Where can I go? How do I get from point to point? Where can enemies come from? Where are good hiding points? Where are enemies likely to be? Again this takes a while to learn and know well enough to make split second decisions. Enemy Behavior PVE enemies are predictable. Humans are significantly harder to predict, and sometimes completely unpredictable. We're intelligent, not limited to 4 random options. This is very hard to learn to manage. Tougher Enemies Face it, PVE enemies are either weaker or slower/limited than Guardians. Guardian enemies are not. They're just as fast, and just as deadly as we are. That requires learning new ways of thinking and tactics. Weapons Experienced players are far more likely to have the good weapons that can put a guardian down in a hurry, while newer players don't. Even if equally matched, the player with the better weapon will win. (Thorn dominates, but you have to play PVP against Thorn users to get it. Automatic disadvantage.) Reflexes Some of us simply don't have the fast reflexes necessary to take advantage of that 0.05 second window of opportunity to get a kill. But if the other player does, you're down. Of course, experience gives you the ability to predict when and where someone will be, but that can only go so far. Communications Teamwork will always defeat individuals. That requires communications. I only recently fixed the network problem that prevented me from using a mike. Even then it took a couple of weeks to be sure it was working because no one seems to use them. Certainly the really poor players probably don't. There's certainly more, but I think those are the main points. In short it's a steep learning curve. And with the way Bungie matches players, you will have to climb that curve while being killed by highly skilled and experienced players. 10 seconds at a time is hardly long enough to learn much.

Had brain tumor surgery in February. I am solid, but get brain fatigue if I play too long. When I go below 0.5 KDR, I know I need to get off the box. Unfortunately, I have a Neurosurgeon appointment on Wednesday, as they think it is coming back. So, most likely, I won't be PvPing much after. Playing the PvE game is very easy, so I will still fight the darkness as long as I can :) (Funny tip: When I played my 3rd Crucible Match ever, back in Sept 2014, I got a Suros Regime.. with a horrible KDR:)

              • Thorn. I try my best to use my mida on my warlock. I enjoy using it sooo much. It's amazing but unless I suppose them AND they miss 1 shot I just can't win. Then frustration sets in. Then it declines even more.

              • I'm one of those guys. I hate pvp, and actively avoid it most of the time. And I almost never enjoy it. But for some stuff you have to play it. For example: It's the only way to get some exotic weapons. It's the only way to get iron banner gear. It's some people's only consistent way to get etheric light.

              • There are some very good comments below, some with which I agree. I think the main thing for me is reaction time, or lack thereof. I have a great deal of map knowledge and I don't do anything stupid, but I just can't keep up. See, I'm 35 years old and never played online shooters before Destiny. The best players are mostly the young ones, I suspect. Reaction time decays with age.

              • I just suck at PvP. Only reason I play it is for the occasional Iron Banner and exotic bounty. Doesn't help that I typically plan my playtime ahead of time; it's easy for PvE because of how predictable and overpowered I am in most PvE activities but it's difficult with PvP because sometimes I'm the King of PvP and most of the time I'm the Scrub King of PvP.

              • I struggled really bad and still not good, but over time and because I like iron banner stuff an etheric light I completed my thorn bounty in a few hours yesterday and never had a kd under 1.5! You get better over time if you put the hours in. Still can't do trials though

Been wondering personally for the longest! Guess this game does have a pretty big learning curve... Mostly due to the super shitty balance

                • I have a 2.03 trials k/d. But there are times when I am just an average player and that is because of lag. I found out this weekend I have a 1.25 down load speed and my buddies said that is just terrible. I live in apartment complex and sharing internet blows. I move in a month so will have boss connection in my first home. All I am saying is connection has a lot to do with it. I am usually green bar but my down pad speed is horrendous. Feels like my character (agile blade dancer) is in slow motion. When I feel like my connection is at least good I can be one of the best pvp players
