The thorn is supposed to be the most powerful weapon in the game, but for some reason gjallarhorn is somehow more powerful. It's complete crap and Bungie has no idea how to make a game. There is no reason I should ever lose a fight to a gjallarhorn user if I'm using a thorn, it should be brought up to the Gjallarhorn level or better.
