Exotic Upgrade and Relevel System Explained

To make this easier I'm going to refer to old exotics as exotics v1.0 and new or upgrade exotics as v2.0. Similar to how if you upgrade from an iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 they are similar but yet they are different. Exotics v1.0 are not obsolete with the new DLC. They will be exactly the same after the DLC as they were before it. If you have all of them and they are fully maxed, they will still be fully maxed after the DLC update. If you would like to get the brand new shiny Exotic v2.0 you will need to cash in your Exotic v1.0 and pay for the upgrade difference in the form of 1 exotic shard and 7k glimmer. The exotic shard will cost 7 strange coins from Xur or it can be obtained by dismantling an exotic. Once you've traded it in you have a brand new un-leveled Exotic v2.0 of the Exotic v1.0 that you traded in. It has higher base stats then your old Exotic v1.0 and maxes out at higher stats. This process is completely optional. There will be new Exotics v2.0 in the DLC that you can get and level up. The process is basically identically as you would have to obtain the new one and fully level it, just the same as if you went through the upgrade process with the Exotics v1.0. Exotics v1.0 used to take a long time to level, but there have been changes made that decrease the amount of time it takes. - Exotics no longer require Ascendant Materials. (This means there is no timed cap to how quickly you can purchase upgrade nodes) - More bounty slots. (More bounty slots mean that XP gain goes much more quickly than before.) - New bounties from Eris. (More bounties mean that there is a higher total amount of bonus XP that can be earned daily.) - Planet materials can be bought from the tower. (This means no more hours spent running circles on the planet to get an upgrade node.) Re-leveling an upgraded Exotic v2.0 will not take anywhere remotely close to level as the original Exotic v1.0's took. This whole process is optional though and only results in a small gain over old exotics. For weapons it's a difference of 300->320 attack. One alternative would have been for Bungie to leave the old Exotic v1.0 alone and only have the new DLC exotics to be v2.0. The result would have been basically the same as you would still have to fully level the new exotics. This new system gives everyone the ability to bring their favorite exotics into the DLC if they so choose, but only if they choose. Update: It looks like upgrades will be a rotating stock at Xur. Two items per class for the armor for 6 total armor upgrades and 6 total weapon upgrades per week. It appears that you need to equip the item and then purchase the upgrade from Xur to complete the process. Update: One point which I think Bungie did mess up on was that they should have announced the Exotic changes and the new upgrade path simultaneously. For anyone that put an exotic shard into something to fully max it as v1.0 now has to put forth another exotic shard to upgrade it. If it was known this would be the process then they could have decided to wait to upgrade it or to max it out. If nothing else Bungie should change it so if that an Exotic shard was put into the weapon then it is not needed for the upgrade since it was already spent. This would be fair as someone who previously fully leveled the weapon has to spend 1 shard to upgrade, it should only cost someone who fully leveled it this week to only cost 1 exotic shard to upgrade, not 2. Update: Awesome, hit the trending page. Thanks everyone for your posts and civil discussions!

Surely, rather than creating a 2.0 exotic and having a 1.0 exotic that you have to upgrade and re-grind to reach 323 attack, it would be easier and fairer for everyone to just change the stats of our existing exotics. They do it all the time when they nerf or buff equipment in the weekly update and that way no one would loose their current progression. If you've only got a Sauros regime 1.0 you only get a 2.0. But if you've got a Truth 1.3 then you get 2.3. If your exotic is already fully upgraded then you automatically get a fully upgraded weapon. That way no one looses and those who gain will only have got a small buff but will still have put in the time, effort and either planetary materials or ascendant materials to get that equipment to that level the first time. Why should any of us have to loose out, even temporarily? I'd also like to point out I only have 3 fully levelled exotic so this won't be affecting me too much. But this does seem like a stupidly over complicated way of making the changes to exotic 2.0 which is going to leave a lot of people feeling cheated after hours upon hours of grinding.

      • Actually no, Apple is retarded so don't use them for an example. We, and our digital Guardians live in an age of time where you can't throw stuff away. You have to recycle stuff, thus upgrading what you have makes 10,000 more sense than tossing it away for 23 more damage. Do you buy a new graphics card to your computer, or throw it away? Ridiculous.

          • "This process is completely optional" -blam!- this sentence. And -blam!- anyone who honestly believes it is true. This is called passively forcing us to upgrade our Exotics. This system doesn't need explaining, stop trying to get attention by trying to sound smart. This system sucks and that is that. You might not care, but most players do, think about the casual player who might only have 1 or 2 exotics, and they have taken weeks to finally upgrade it, now that progress will be wasted, because you know what, if they want to continue using it, they need to upgrade it. There is nothing worse than having many hours of work and effort all being for nothing. If you can't wrap your head around why people are upset about this, then your opinion isn't worth listening to.

              • To re level an exotic does it have to be fully leveled in the first place?? (300 damage) *For weapons* *For Armor* if I decide to re level my gear, does its light level increase to an obtainable 32??

                      • Shard your Hawkmoon and Monte Carlo. Looks like the only way to get the upgraded versions is by getting another one to drop after the expansion comes.

I fell that you missed the point a fair bit.. Simply put the problem is you gain nothing from having maxed your exotics, and, as you say, exotics are now easier to upgrade. So it's not that people will have to upgrade again that is the issue, it's that my fully upgraded exotics, that were upgraded the hard way, have no more value than another players exotics that sat in the vault and cost nothing to keep. My solution is easy. ONLY fully upgraded weapons can be upgraded to 2.0.

                          • You are incorrect in your first update. The picture has multiple Exotics for upgrade shown, armor and weapons, for all classes at the same time. It's not possible for this to even happen.

If they release a suite of new exotics I think your point of "optional" would hold. I have the impression that there are only a few v2.0 exotics being released though. Does anyone know how many exotics are contained in the expansion? Edit: good post btw OP

In a way it's like tech 1 vs tech 2 items in Eve Online. Tech 2 is better, and takes a tech 1 item to make it. The real problem is, Bungie is doing away with tech 1 items... basically all new exotics are better than the old ones... That is what pisses people off. Sure you can keep our old exotic, but when a player gets their first exotic they should have to undergo your same upgrade before your new tech 2 exotic. Bungie messed up.

Could someone tell me if Xur will be able to upgrade any exotic you currently have in your inventory or do we have to wait until he has a specific weapon/armor type each week in order to upgrade? Example: I have praxic fire/hawkmoon and Friday I buy new v2.0 upgrade for both praxic/hawk. Or I have praxic fire/Hawkmoon and Friday Xur is only selling v2.0 upgrade for sunbreakers/suros ? If #2 is correct then what will happen with PS exclusives, will they be put into Xur rotation as well?
