Destiny changed how i see game reviews

i just wanted to say that because of destiny i am officially ignoring game reviews from now on. Yes many of the bad things pointed out by reviewers and players alike are very true(story, repetitive, voice acting, etc). But for me none of those things take away from the fact that attempting alien genocide with a handful of buddies is just so blamin fun! I love the cycle of kill, loot, back to town, reapeat. Iv never played a dungeon crawler(yep, thats what im calling it) that was such a joy gameplay wise(looking at u diablo 3!). So b4 i just keep rambling about why im so hooked on this game, ill just say that iv concluded that formerly trusted review houses dont have my interests and game sensibilities in mind when writing their reviews. Iv never held reviews as the primary factor when deciding to buy a game, but it was a consideration. But now after seeing the almost fervently angry reviews(gamespot, polygon, and escapist in particular) these people clearly are not in line with my interest and their opinions will get 0 consideration in my decision making process in the future.

  •
my interest and opinions will get 0 consideration in any making process in the future
Fixed. It is not only the reviews ... game scores are also way down - and these are set by actual gamers. You can go add your vote if you like, and hopefully then realize that you are in the minority ... this game sucks.

  • I seen reviews from 6 to 8.75. I do notice how certain games get a higher review if the staff generally likes that area of play. AKA multiplayer pvp. There is some new stuff. And some pseudo ripoffs (copying from another game) , I called it pseudo rip offs because great gamers think alike. Gamer company A wants public events in their next game, game takes 5 years to come out. Gamer company B wants public events also, but their takes only 4 years. I still on Venus missions but will give a 7 so far. You know the map/ enemy location repeats when on your second moon mission you can spam nades without looking and take out 3 low level enemy.

  • Sure it is repetitive and has a lot of similarities to other games (Halo-like enemies, loot collecting and such from Borderlands, orbs and interactions like in Fable, multiplayer like C.O.D, etc), but that doesn't make it a bad game. To me, its everything I like about all the other games I've played, put into one game. It is still fun and addicting. It is a game that will take ages to 100%/get platinum on. It's also a game that will continue to expand. Some people complain about the fact that they are still adding things. I find that to be a good thing. There are new things all the time and it beats having them shove too much on you on day one. I think one of the problems is that there was sooo much hype about the game and everyone expected it to be absolutely perfect. No game is perfect. What people are neglecting to mention are the positives. Yes, there are some problems (the repetition, the over-powered moves in multiplayer, the short storyline), but it has many more positives (the way you interact with other players on the story mode, the daily activities, the customization options, the mostly open world, the different gaming options, etc). It is sad that there are so many negative reviews but people have to remember that everyone's posts and reviews and such are opinions. So form your own.

  • I feel the same way. These reviewers don't see what the potential that Destiny will bring to the table. I cant wait to be playing this game 2 years down the line with a crap load of new content available. I see that reviewers cant hold a good enough opinion of a game any more. I used to rely on reviews heavily but now all reviewers of video games might as well be trash.

The only thing I don't really understand is everyone saying "you have to play the game for 15 hours for it to get good", or "the game hasn't even started to introduce its universe". Imagine playing Mass Effect for 15 hours before anything starts to happen, or the game reaches its potential (spoiler alert, it doesn't, as the game builds a fascinating universe in the first few hours of gameplay). It's also like saying "Well, GTA V can't be properly reviewed yet because heists and zombies haven't been released yet." That's so wrong. A game should be shipped as a complete title when it gets published. DLC should just expand the main storyline, or add nuanced options to the multiplayer. Downloadable content should NEVER be necessary to comprehend the storyline of a game. I paid $60 for GTA V that will have more than twice the content of Destiny even once Destiny releases all its DLC. I appreciate an open mind when it comes to reading reviews. You need to be able to form your own opinion about an entertainment title, but at the same time you cannot discount everyone else's opinions simply because you disagree with them. Typically in regards to a game, an opinion is backed up by something vaild. Just don't be an idiot.

      • I agree fully. I still remember very well what games like WoW looked and played like before the hundreds of patches and tweaks that went into it. I honestly think Destiny is an amazing starting point for what they hope to accomplish and am looking forward to staying along for the ride and seeing Bungie make this living universe more and more alive.

      • I kind of liken it to WoW. How much content did that game have when it was released? How repetitive were those quests? Now look what its become. Even if you aren't a fan of WoW, it's safe to say that it is a huge success in the genre. I think people are looking at Destiny like it supposed to hit the ground running with as much content and playability as WoW has now. I always look and see what reviewers have to say as well as other gamers. My buying decision isn't based on them, but just to see what kind of buzz is being generated. Both player and critical reviews for Destiny are pretty polarizing. I can see how they might find faults with some things about the game, but the negatives don't really effect me personally from enjoying the game. I enjoyed the beta and I'm enjoying the full release even more. From what I understand, reviewers don't really have a long time to review a game. They play it, review it and move on. Again, this is my understanding based on things I've read. A game like Destiny, to me, can't really be reviewed like a typical beginning, middle, end type of game. I think Destiny is a solid foundation to build upon. The game is barely over a week old and technically not even done as far as content goes, and even that will be ongoing. Regardless, I'm thoroughly enjoying it and don't typically post on forums. I think most of us who are enjoying Destiny for what it is and the possibilities of what's to come, are too busy playing it to bother posting about it! At the end of the day, it all comes down to if you are enjoying it. If so, congrats! If not, sure, voice your opinion about it, then either wait until the game has more content, or sell/trade and move on, I guess.

        • Very true!!! It's same with music and films who the -blam!- listens to the top 40 unless your a little girl or gay, the mainstream view on things suck!!! Don't listen to anyone! Play the game and make your own decision! How the -blam!- can this game get a 6/10 when there's games that I would even class as a game get high reviews!

        • I think alot of critics jumped the gun. The game is far from over. Sure there are a number of improvements that could be made to the game but I am enjoying my experience, so who care what other people have to say?

I think most of the reviews I've read were pretty accurate. It's repetitive, it's not really an mmo, and it doesn't do justice as a story driven FPS. The cut scenes featuring the Queen of the Awoken made me think that was going to change, but after that the story became as uninteresting as it was prior to the introduction of the Queen and her brother. When I played the beta, I certainly had fun, but based on Bungie's descriptions I thought the beta was just sparse as it was only a small portion of the content. Unfortunately, all the additional worlds that came with the release is almost as sparse, and the game in it's current state does not live up to what Bungie hinted it would be. Now, perhaps the game in it's current state is not all there is. Perhaps it will evolve to become more what Bungie described it as rather than what it is today. Having said that, I never read that it WASN'T fun. It certainly is. But to me it seems to be that the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Certain aspects of the game are definitely great fun, but other parts are repetitive... I'm grinding the >20 content, and I'm just going to the same places I went before, but with a greater number of enemies with far more health. I'm getting the same looking gear, but with different stats. There is no uniqueness. I have a few more skills/talents, but I FEEL almost the same as when I was lvl 10. In the end, I think the negative slant given to most of the reviews is simply because it could have been so much more (and sure seemed to be advertised as such), and perhaps it will be. I'm enjoying the game and am hoping it will continue to develop before I start losing interest.

            • I read this expecting to see someone immature complaining about how much game critics suck because they didn't give a game they liked a score that they felt it deserved, but this was pretty mature and well written. You'll definitely get criticized for posting this as many will ignore your admission that the negatives pointed out are valid; however, ignoring reviews from now on because they have proven not to be in line with your interests is a pretty good reason for doing so and more should probably think that way. If you've found that review scores consistently didn't reflect your thinking then they aren't terribly useful to you. Good work, Guardian.

              • So you don't want to look at game reviews any more because they disagree with you? What a tool. You do know reviews are a well structured OPINION right? Just because someone writes a review and you disagree doesn't make the review wrong. Ten people could all write a review of the same thing and come up with ten different ratings and all be perfectly valid in their reviews. Reviews are and always have been a guide. It is baffling that it has taken this long for some people to work that out. I mean what does someone else's opinion matter to your own opinion anyway? Are you really that shallow that you wouldn't play a game you liked the look of just because a reviewer said it was bad? If the review is poorly written ignore it, if the general consensus is that the game is bad across the board then that tells you something, but in all cases you may be the odd one out that loves a game most other people hate. You don't let other people sway your own opinion like some sheep. It isn't rocket science!

                • Maybe they just don't like it? I personally give it a 6/10. Very generic. A rip off of Diablo, Borderlands, Warframe, and Defiance. Coming from a guy with 52 platinums.

                    • your life will be so much more easy now.. I stopped reading, and i deleted all reviewers form my twitter, and facebook a while ago since i figured out they only write for the clicks.. they are not objective, and they only want to earn as much click as possible in a short amount of time.. Clicks = Money. Really people, reviewers, only write what you want to read..

                    • You can choose not to take game reviews seriously anymore, that's perfectly fine. Though I don't think the reviewers should be discredited for giving this game average scores. There's really nothing new in this game. Perhaps it's new to you because you have little experience with this sort of game, but not to me. Neither is it new to the critics who have surely played dozens of "loot" games before. Games like Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Diablo, Warframe, and WoW I've had a lot of experience with. Destiny is essentially Halo with the mmo elements and "gear treadmill" that Blizzard perfected in WoW. The enemies in the game are even identical to the Covenant in terms of their mechanics and styles. You've got your little annoying Dregs/Grunts that can be killed in 1 hit and run around pillars and rocks the whole time. You've got your Vandals aka Jackals who are slightly tougher and like to snipe. Then you've got your Captains/Elites who have shields and can knock your health down if they smack you. The Hive are a lot like the Flood in terms of how they try to swarm you in battle. You can even see Brutes and Hunters in a few of the other enemies. There are even enemies with swords who charge at you while invisible. As for the gear system, it's straight from games like WoW, Diablo, or any other loot based game. Is this a fun game? Yep. Am I addicted to it as of now? Yep. Is this the game that was going to revolutionize the FPS genre? Sadly, no.

                      • At least Jack(from Mass Effect 2 & 3) did a half decent voice acting job. But overall I would say this is "average" it excellent in areas and utterly lacks in others. Overhyped to all hell...
