i just wanted to say that because of destiny i am officially ignoring game reviews from now on. Yes many of the bad things pointed out by reviewers and players alike are very true(story, repetitive, voice acting, etc). But for me none of those things take away from the fact that attempting alien genocide with a handful of buddies is just so blamin fun! I love the cycle of kill, loot, back to town, reapeat. Iv never played a dungeon crawler(yep, thats what im calling it) that was such a joy gameplay wise(looking at u diablo 3!). So b4 i just keep rambling about why im so hooked on this game, ill just say that iv concluded that formerly trusted review houses dont have my interests and game sensibilities in mind when writing their reviews. Iv never held reviews as the primary factor when deciding to buy a game, but it was a consideration. But now after seeing the almost fervently angry reviews(gamespot, polygon, and escapist in particular) these people clearly are not in line with my interest and their opinions will get 0 consideration in my decision making process in the future.

I actually liked the story, only problem I had was there wasn't more of it.

Total agreement.

9 RepliesThis thread changed how I see you. No, in fact I already knew from the title you'd be a Halo bot who does not recognize true value in gaming. Destiny is bad, get over it.
-
1 ReplyMost get paid to lean one way or the other. Worthless.
-
couldnt agree more i would give this game a 9/10 its not perfect but pretty close, and it will only get better.

1 ReplyReviewers are part of a company. Companies are often bribed by other companies. Unless it's a freelance guy who legitly follows a good template for reviewing they are all bullshit
-
Those reviewers don't even seem to get that rush when you destroy the Nightfall strike or even open the first door to the Vault of Glass. And the lack of proxy chat has never even posed an issue. You work with a random for a while doing whatever and just invute them to your fireteam. Boom, instant friends. I have had so much fun just playing with other people and freaking out when we do those things very few have.
-
Damn true. Destiny is a game that challenges their players just like you said. I'm almost certain none of those reviewers who actually played got past level 20-22, let alone ever attempting a nightfall strike or raid.

9 RepliesEdited by CP FELONS: 9/17/2014 3:36:07 PMThis article sums it up best. Now be warned i have an internet stalker on these forums that has not even played destiny yet but anytime I post this he comes crying about it...just ignore him... http://www.gamesradar.com/if-youre-worried-about-destinys-longevity-or-level-cap-you-dont-understand-destiny/.

Youtube commentaries, friend's suggestions and Twitch live streams. That's what I use to judge a game since two years and I've never been disappointed. Kudos to Bungie for always providing an open beta.

Sir I tilt my hat at you

Well written post. Personally I hardly ever take the advice of games reviewers. When I look at buying a game I like the look of I look for three things. 1) will I be entertained? 2) will I enjoy the gameplay and plot? 3) will I want to come back to the game again? See what I did there? In other words I couldn't give a flying -blam!- what other people think of a game I find to be enjoyable nor could I care less if someone calls me a noob for liking it. If the game appeals to me and I'm happy with the product. I'll part with money.

Edited by Blatantfool: 9/17/2014 5:28:23 AMIt's important to make the distinction between someone trying to review games for the sake of the consumer (People like Totalbiscuit) and people who think that being a glorified blogger on a website with a herd of sheep following means their opinion is the most valuable thing around (Websites like Kotaku). The difference is simple. One wants to look over a game and arm you with information so that you can make your own decision on the game. The other wants to tell you what to play and whether or not you should be having fun playing something. Support people who give fair reviews. Whether they're a blogger or a youtuber doesn't matter. Ignore websites that are high on themselves (Especially Polygon and Kotaku. You literally have no excuse to listen to their tripe. They're so out of touch it's literally sick.) Some people like to say "You can't review an MMO." - this is technically true. You can, but it requires more then most of these guys are willing to put into it. A Proper MMO review requires both an early first impressions during the leveling process and a final impressions after they've completed a character to the point where it's more or less done. You don't see it very often because of the effort that can take. For the buyer the most powerful tool for educating yourself on an MMO is going to be Livestreams. Watching people playing the game in it's natural state with no trailer doctoring or marketing in the way. People really should be watching Livestreams of games to educate themselves on them in general. It's one method you can use to turn yourself into a smart buyer.

I am right there with you man. IGN atleast took the correct approach and worked on the review over a week of playing the game and even that won't be enough to get a full review of the game because it was designed to have new things to do in the coming weeks, months, and even years. I couldn't agree with you more though and I used to look at game critics reviews for help when buying a game, now I'm just going to ignore all of them and decide myself. It's a shame that these companies are so biased instead of actually reviewing games on quality and pure enjoyment.
-
Khalid you are absolutely right! Best game ever made it's just in its baby stage. Critics point out irrelevant issues that have no bearing on the enjoyment of this game whatsoever. Voice overs suck who gives a flying crap. Hard to get loot? That's the damn point and why you get excited and keep playing. All mmo style games have some kind of grind it is unavoidable but bungie has made it less monotonous and more free roam. Critics can gtfo and leave this masterpiece to the players without the downs. Can't expect an mmo to start out with years of content you morons and they've clearly provided a partial schedule for the future. It's far more game than call of duty or halo already so wtf is missing? GTFO :)

I think the number system for reviewing games just sucks, because people will look at a 6 or 7 and say it trash and that almost never the case.
-
GameSpot seemed heavily biased to me. They breezed over the good parts, and immediately went to the parts that weren't as good. An example being the fact that they mentioned the weapon given to players at the end of the game. Literally, that's one of the only times that ever happens (where everyone gets the same weapon regardless of play style), yet they gave the impression that it was a constant scenario.

Honestly man this is the best thing you can do when it comes to video games now-a-days. Games have become so padded when it comes to reviews with producers paying out review companies to give good or bad reviews etc. I have this same viewpoint with every game now. I still go online to check out the updates and what not about upcoming releases but when it comes to reviews I dont even pay attention anymore. I have been a loyal bungie fan since H1 CE and they have always brought the heat when they release their games. I've been playing games for a long time now and only a few certain games have held my attention and just from playing this game for a week I can already tell it will be apart of that list. I am excited to see what Bungie has in store for us!

I have heard everyone that I play with wants more of [Something] in Destiny. I too want more, more lore, more content. But what I find myself wanting More of, the most, is play time. I want to play Destiny more! I would like more stuff, but I know its coming. And I will be patient. Every game on Earth has repetitive elements. Just as every Human on Earth has repetitive elements. And if your life didn't repeat time and time again, you would be dead. It is no wonder why games are repetitive. Nor is there a problem with it, how would you get better at the crucible, if you could only play each map once? How would you get better gear, if you could only do each strike one time? How would you experience each class, if you could only make one? Sure... some games have 20 or more hours of intense, involved story lines. But unless you are unusually hooked, when you finish the story, your done. At least for a while. You may pick it back up and play through it again in 4 months, but it will all still be the same. But you pick up Destiny 4 months from now, and there's going to be all kinds of new stuff. 4 months after that... even more... Destiny offers the ability to play this game 2 years from now, and step into a world that will be completely different, and offer totally new challenges and missions, etc. Not to mention continued support and bug fixes. Give the game a chance. Bungie has already showed us what they can do. Now just let them prove it. I can think of 10 games right now that cost the same, and are massive heaps of s$%t.

5 RepliesEdited by chromium: 9/17/2014 8:48:46 PMWhat? The reviews you mention make some very valid, objectively true criticisms while also offering some equally valid, objectively true praise for the title. The game DOES, in fact, have many, many issues that need to be, and will be, sorted out in the coming months... but that doesn't mean you, or anyone else, can't still manage to have fun in the meantime, nor did the reviewers claim that players will be incapable of having fun in the meantime. Professional reviewers are *doing their jobs* by not completely dismissing the title altogether, but also not allowing the bright spots of the game or its jaw-dropping budget and production values to blind their judgment altogether and obscure the admittedly quite dark spots. Speaking of the Gamespot review, Kevin VanOrd said it very well, if I may paraphrase: Destiny (in it's current form) *IS* an excellent foundation for something very special and enduring yet to come, but in it's current state the experience is rather hallow and certainly lacks spirit.... I have faith that Bungie will address these concerns and that this title will still be relevant for (hopefully many!) years to come. It's silly to dismiss the ideas a person brings to bear on a subject simply because you disagree with his or her conclusion -- how wasteful! Indeed, how foolish.

19 RepliesThe game has a crap story. Mediocre voice acting at best, of which there is very little. It is WAAAAAAAAY to repetitive. On the budget these guys are rolling, this game should not only be interactive, and possess all kinds of random enemy encounters, but it should have MUCH more length. Alot of people are spouting about how, its a ten year story... yes, but think about that.... when do you think the next destiny is coming out? NOT FOR A WHILE. so youll get an expansion in a month? realistically how much game do you think that is going to add? Right now the game requires 150 vanguard points to get ONE PIECE of vanguard armor... and you are only allowed to aquire 100 a week. Basically, Bungie has pigeon holed the player base into having to play the same dungeons at least 25 times per piece in order to achieve any kind of gear worthy of a players true time. And there is nothing new in these dungeons each time. The same speaches, the same patrols, the same drop ships.... not to mention, the utter disgusting predictability of the attack sequences.(everytime my ghost stops to scan) The games only saving graces are the PVP, and the fact that playing with other people from your clan is fun because you can talk.... oh wait though.... there is almost NO in game support for clans at all. The game honestly deserves no higher than a 6 at this point by any means. I would have given it a 5 out of 10 released as it is on any next gen system for sure. If you rate a game you must rate all games by that scale. And that is what most of the sites are doing. Reviewing this game as it stands in its best shape and form on Next Gen consoles, and it is COMPLETELY LACKING OF ANY SUBSTANCE WORTH OF A HIGH RATING! For instance, I played border lands. A well designed game, with expansions, and multiplayer.... it DESTROYS this game entirely as a shooter. Or even in another type of game. Look at The Last of Us. Another product which on all levels, even graphically it beats this game. And dont even get me started on story quality. This games story is absolutely abysmal. To the point of nearly wanting to quit after it ended. You cannot be a true gamer, and look at destiny and think of it as a game of amazing quality for next generation games. It lacks FAR to much substance and versatility. Reviewers and review sites are giving low scores BECAUSE OF THIS FACT! if this came out five years ago, it would get a 9. But for all the money they had, and all the ability of theses systems to do great things.... NOTHING was done to push the envelope in ANY way. Its a huge ball they dropped hard and will now have to recover from it. Flat out, as far as this launch/prologue/ whatever you want to think of it as, it is VERY VERY BAD from Bungie. They would have done much better to bring us a larger more finished, and longer story scripted product only to next gen systems, and left the old generation alone. In another year, the last gen systems will fully begin to be left out of the new title developments anyway. Even Destiny has told people this. its a very disappointing release. I LOVE BUNGIE, I do have fun in Destiny (when i am playing in clan. The rest is just a boring grind) .... but not enough fun to warrant 65 dollars for the game and 34 for the expansion set up, and then a wasted 10 hours on story line that was short and had absolutely NO character arch, nor captivated anyone at all. It deserves a 5 or 6. Ill still play it with friends, but Im not gonna act like this game is a game of the quality Bungie is capable of in any way shape or form. I hope Bungie recovers quickly with that Half a billion dollars they recieved to make this franchise. Because if they don't. They are gonna lose more than face in the gaming community.

The main campaign felt like a prologue to an epic story rather than a standalone thing, playing it on hard mode only was really fun though.
The last mission confuses that idea slightly, they said in the Game-informer interview that it was about waking up the traveler before it's too late, not fully destroying the darkness, and that matches all of the enemies being still powerful, no introduced fifth race, what the Exo stranger said in the end, and all of the other side quest lore that got set up.
3 RepliesTo the people that call this game repetitive, have you not played CoD? Or Even battlefield? The games themselves are repetitive, and people pay $60+ every year for the same game. On top of that the multiplayer is far more repetitive than anything in Destiny. I think the game is designed to be more about working together and, quite frankly, blowing shit up. And in the aspect of the lacking story, people love Dark Souls, and tell me, where is the expressly written out story in and Souls game ever?

Edited by Serg: 9/17/2014 3:48:20 PMThis is how I rate my games: 3/3 - Fun, must buy 2/3 - it's Ok, rent it tho... 1/3 - Sucks, don't even bother. Destiny is definitely 3/3 and that's all that matters to me.

It took you this long to realize that reviewers are handed money to write whatever?
