Edit: this review is outdated. I'm seriously considering giving this game the title of "my favourite game of all time". It's just stuck with me for almost a week after completion.
Note: The OP has no spoilers in it, but the comment section might. Viewer discretion is advised.
Naughty Dog should make movies. Seriously. Their stories are as good as some of the best movies I've ever seen, and sometimes even better. Which is why I couldn't be more excited to hear about an Uncharted movie as well as a The Last of Us movie, starring Maisie Williams, who I absolutely love to pieces. But I'm getting off topic.
I've been with ND since the “start”. When I say that, I mean the OG Crash Bandicoot on the PS1. Even back then, no one made a platformer like the Dogs did. Yes, I'm comparing it to Spyro, Super Mario, and whatever other popular platformer you could think of. When they made the switch to PS2, I couldn't believe my eyes. Jak and Daxter is, hands-down, my favourite platformer ever created. And the series only gets better from there on.
And then came Uncharted. Which shook my opinions about ND quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, Drake's Fortune and Among Thieves are decent titles. They just aren't “OMG 10/10” experiences to me. I can't comment on Drake's Deception, because I'm still in the middle of a playthrough of it. The point is, it left a sour taste in my mouth. Which made me skip over The Last of Us on PS3. I didn't think it would be that great. The zombie-theme is so played out now, and when the reviews came out, I just rolled my eyes and said “it's another Uncharted 2”. But then came it's remastering.
My love for ND was paired with the lack of PS4 titles, and the stars aligned. I took the leap of buying this game. And we're about 5 minutes into a review, depending on reading speeds, and I havne't even started. So here's my assessment:
The game is amazing.
I said it.
My first playthrough, I did not enjoy myself. It really did feel like “Uncharted” with a story that was just a bit better than UC2's and a worse cover system. Of course, I was playing on easy. That was my first mistake. To really get the most out of these games, you need to play on something higher than Normal. Otherwise you're just wasting your time.
I went from "easy" to "grounded", the game's hardest level. And the amount of fun I had multiplied ten-fold. The ammo is limited, so you have to scan the areas you're in to find parts for upgrades, supplements to improve health, materials for molotovs, health packs, and nail grenades. And in scanning the environment, you stumble upon these cutesy little conversations that the characters have. Joel and Ellie are such a wicked duo, they rival Jak and Daxter as my favourite of all time. Joel is like the loving father who will do anything for his daughter, and Ellie is just... hard to put into words. I'm in love with her. She's the best sidekick you could ever have. Plus, her voice actor is a total babe.
Back to the gameplay...
The game's enemies are no more difficult to kill on easy than they are on grounded. They still require one headshot to kill. This is where I found the most enjoyment. The difficulty is not in the enemy health, like the Uncharted game's bullet-sponge AI, but in the strategic usage of your supplies to just make it through to the next area. Should you use the two pistol shots you have left and just barely get through the doorway? Should you distract the guards with a beer bottle? Would you rather be patient, and wait for your time to perform a stealth takedown? The choice is up to you. And so is the brilliance of the gameplay.
Another problem I had with Uncharted is that there was only two main parts to the game: rooms with enemies to shoot, and puzzles. TLOU corrects and perfects this, whilst adding more. The enemies never get boring. Just when you think “okay, I've had enough of the humans”, they drop you into a clicker(zombie)-infested basement where the infected sneak up from behind you and make you shit yourself. It's just... brilliant.
And the multiplayer is not bad, either. It's not tacked-on bullshit like Tomb Raider, there's some actual thought to it, and it's not half bad. Given, I haven't played much of it, but my buddy is totally into it, and I trust him.
Anyways, I could go on and on about this game. From the perfect blend of city and forest, to the stunningly realistic 1080p pixel count that will leave you foaming at the mouth. 3 seperate times have people walked in on me playing this game and asked if I was watching a movie. That's how good it looks.
I still don't know what you're doing reading this review if you haven't bought it already. Buy it. Now.
For best results, play on Hard difficulty and wear a diaper.

10 RepliesEdited by BannedLemön: 8/6/2014 1:19:51 PMI'm playing it on normal on my first playthrough, like I do with every game if there's a difficulty option available. Gameplay is basic, but solid. Bullets are decently scarce, and makes using the bow more important. Story is great. Joel and Ellie's interaction is great. -blam!- bloaters.
The Last of Us movie, starring Maisie Williams
That's not confirmed.

2 RepliesIt'll be the first title I pick up when I get around to buying a PS4. I still think it's a bit of a circlejerk to remaster a game within a year of its original release though.

4 RepliesTL;DR version: TLOU is a masterpiece

3 RepliesEdited by BasedLove: 8/6/2014 8:42:23 PMJak and Daxter is shit. Naughty Dog was a total sellout with that series. They copied whatever genre was popular at the time. Ok what's popular right now? Cartoonish 3d platformer? Ok that will be Jak and Daxter. Ok we need a sequel but we are to lazy to think of ideas ourselves? What's popular right now? Edgy shooters set in dsytopian cities under seige by aliens? Ok well make that, but drop Daxter from the title since we are putting him in a supporting roll anyway. And Jak, we'll make Jak super edgy in this with emo powers. Now we have Jak 2. Ok we need a third game. What else is popular? Post apocalyptic wasteland games and racing you say? Sounds like a good setting for Jak 3! Ok our trilogy is over but we need to milk some more money out of the brand name. How about we make a shitty racing game and put Jak in it. And we can give it a super edgy title like Jak X. lolsony.
