I didn't really get into the story for several reasons
1) It felt like I was just thrown into the story with no backstory or anything
I mean
I just woke up from centuries is death and I'm just immediately fighting the war
I'm not talking about the tutorial level
That I understand but it didn't feel like I was in control of my character
I felt like we would get more backstory
What happened with the Darkness?
How did the war play out?
It had so much potential for interesting story but Bungie just throws you into this world no questions asked
2) My character didn't seem that important
Bungie made it seem like we are the best of the best
We are the center of the story but I felt that my character had no life
No character development or choices
I was just going where I was told and killed what I was told to kill
I would like more personal choices
3) The Ghost
Don't get me wrong, the Ghost has a lot of potential and is pretty cool but he honestly didn't seem that important
The reason why Cortanna was so successful was because she played an active role in the story
It seems like the Ghost is only there when the story needs him
He plays no important role
He's just there to explain the plot and crack a joke every once in a while
4) Tone
I felt like there should be a darker tone
I mean humanity was wiped to near extinction and there's this Darkness who brings death and destruction across the universe
And it's all toony and light
The enemies honestly don't seem that threatening
The Hive had the best potential to be dark and creepy but they were only scary when you first meet them
Probably because there's no development for anything
You're just thrown into the story and you have to take their word for it
5) Non open open world
The world we're placed in is open but you're always directed where to go and if you choose to explore the place, there's practically nothing there
All there are are repeated rooms and grassy fields
I was hoping it's be like Fallout where each location offers a little something but I guess not
All of this combined with uneven gameplay mechanics makes PvE very meh
If you can't handle my opinion, don't even bother to reply
And if you do want to disagree, try actually addressing my points instead of calling me a O/1O troll or some other stupid insult
And for all of you saying that it's just a beta and that there'll be more in the full game, I sincerely doubt it
After playing the tutorial plus 6 missions, I think that we have a good idea of what the story will include
Just because it's a beta doesn't mean that the full game will come and blow us all away with random new features that everyone wants
The beta is practically the finished product so stop expecting so much
After playing the tutorial plus 6 missions, I think that we have a good idea of what the story will include
So, after rescuing Keyes in Halo you already had a good idea of the Halo rings, Guilty Spark and the flood?

"...and for all of you saying that it's just a beta and that there'll be more in the full game, I sincerely doubt it.." This alone makes your post invalid.

2 RepliesI honestly feel there must've been more dialogue and exposition from the ghost's end before the alpha. We'd still be 'thrown' into the world, but the ghost explained a little more lore to uncover. But then, people spoke, and "That wizard came from the moon," amongst other lines of dialogue, was no more, leaving the ghost much less than the guide he was intended to be.... Such a sad story.

Good things come with time. This was only a slice of what is yet to be revealed.

3 RepliesFo you consider Halo1 a great game with a great storyline? If you say yes, consider replaying the first level and that's it. You have the same feeling of being thrown into a battle without knowing the story. Of course there is more storyline in the Beta than the first stage in Halo, but there is so much more to this game. It's like starting out and only reading chapter 7 of H.G. Wells 'Time Machine. You have the time machine in the future, but the history of how and why of both is still a mystery.
-
I don't know man... exploring that Hellmouth on the Moon, things regarding the Hive only seemed to get more and more demonic as you went down. Gave me some serious Library/Flood vibes down there.

I shall put forth a counter argument: To start with your point on lack of answers with back story and setting this is the very thing that shows the depth of destiny. As guardians, we don't know about the world, so we have to discover it ourselves through NPC dialogs, grimoires, and our own speculation. It's a take that says "if you want the answers, go find them" which I enjoy as opposed to getting spoonfed info. For the tone Destiny works as a space opera. I'm reminded of star wars as a little kid, with a massive world and amazing action. If you were scared by the Hive on your first encounter but saw them as chumps afterwards than good, you should stand and fight the darkness, not fear it. Destiny may not be quite open world but that's not a bad thing because you can still explore what space there is while enjoying the beautiful scenery with the bonus of meeting a friend while exploring. The guardians are only as important as you make them. What you encounter is the challenge to rise above others. In life one must strive for greatness and identity. Destiny does the same by allowing you to pick sides by factions and individual development of what your guardian wears as a symbol of his/her beliefs.

I sorta agree I went into more detain on my video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z08vM3wlKS8

I actually kind of feel the same way. So much in fact when I first played I wished this was a prequel. Instead of the time period we are in now. I would prefer a game where we met the Travel, like in the opening, because I felt so -blam!-ing lost lol Hopefully everything ties up in the end. We were in the beta, so of course Bungie didn't want to give to much away. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the beginning/intro to the game is changed. Not saying its likely but it wouldn't surprise me, considering how there have been a numerous amount of threads about ppl not liking the story or not understanding wtf is going on in the story.

3 RepliesIts like reading 10 pages from a book and saying the story line is crap.

2 RepliesI'm not going to argue any of your points, because the fact that remains that we've barely seen any of the story. Who knows what the rest of the game has in store? Literally, none of the story has been flushed out for us. Never mind, I changed my mind. I'll address them. 1) That's intentional. You were just thrown in to the story. Back story isn't relevant. From here on out, it's your story. The Darkness is something that you'll find out more about as the story goes. They're not going to spoon feed you the synopsis. 2) You are the best of the best. Very few venture outside of the walls and survive. You do it on a daily basis. Choices and such? How can you come to that conclusion after a few hours of the story? Not to mention, not every game is Mass Effect with a moral system and dialog options. 3) Again, we've barely seen the story, so this judgement is silly. 4)Personal preference. Has nothing to do with the actual quality of the story. 5) What in the world does this have to do with story? It's a game-play mechanic, and has no influence on the story. You're judging the game based on a flawed premise that you've seen all there is to be seen.

4 RepliesIf that's how you feel then just move on. A lot of us find the game fun and fascinating. I love the game mechanics and I'm a huge fan. If you don't like it then don't play it. I will agree that it needs to be darker and give more back story. Get me invested in my characters back story. This does not mean that this story will suck. So quick to judge. Playing PVP was fun as hell. Doing the strike was also super fun. I did it over and over. This Beta was a small sample and your so quick to judge. It has so many good aspects you failed to mention. The feeling you get when you join a public event and just as you lose hope a couple of fire teams come to your aid and help you fk sht up. Or that moment when you get your ass handed to you by some dip sht in PVP and you come back and Super the sht out of them. Just feels good. I love Destiny and can't wait to see how the full game develops. Try and see the good things and don't focus so much on the negative.

10 RepliesEdited by StiviX: 7/28/2014 8:12:08 PMYa know there are different ways to telling a story. It's not necessary to give all the details immediately at the beginning. That's dull and bad storytelling because there's no integration, just all the info smacking you in the face at the start. Also in terms of tone, I'm wondering if you were able to play the Moon mission when it was available. If not, it was quite dark in tone. Abandoned facilities, corpses strewn across them against walls, darker areas as you descended further into the depths of the moon.
My character didn't seem that important Bungie made it seem like we are the best of the best
It's all in the subtitle. BECOME legend, not YOU ARE legend. You aren't the best of the best yet.

Wildstar beta... Could only go to level 30.... Around half ( same as destiny ) after level 30 TONS and TONS of more content. /thread same as any beta..........
-
Bungie has always been shit storytellers.
-
You're telling me you have never played a game where in the beginning you know almost nothing about what is going on ? I find that hard, if not impossible, to believe. We have barely played much of the story so we do not know much, i agree that perhaps by the Moon we should know a little more and seem a little more important, but that isn't the way it goes all the time in movies or games. The Ghost is essential, just by playing the limited amount we have i can already tell they are our lifeline. Not only do the Ghosts revive us and help us channel the Travellers Light, but if the Light of the Ghost is put out, it is impossible for a Guardian to revive (as shown by the first Moon story). Mostly all I can tell you is that you should not base all of that on this Beta.

1 ReplyI remember when I played Halo CE many years ago, I just woke up and i had no idea what was going on, the universe just kind of grew around me, and it became my favorite game of all time, destiny return me to that feel of confusion and satisfaction, i for one can't wait to hear all the great stories of legendary guardians who sacrifice themselves to protect all that was remaining of humanity.

4 RepliesYou are looking at it like a game. A stereotypical game that needs to do everything for you. I bet you just fell in love with mass effect. Let's really look at Destiny. Imagine actually waking up, imagine actually BEING your character and not PLAYING them. You've been dead all this time, you are in a world you no longer know, forced to fight enemies that could kill you any second. PLUS you have to fight. That might be scary if you grew up in a past life to be a janitor. Let's look now, you have no shooting skills, in a world you don't know, could die at any second. If people were telling you what to do and where to go, wouldn't you listen? Or do you automatically think you know everything? Of course you listen to what people are saying. It seems as though you want Destiny to be a combination of all these other games but people like you need to realize that Destiny is DESTINY! Not halo, call of duty, Fallout, Mass Effect or anything of the sort. Destiny is the first of its kind. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that. No need to come whine on the forums about how it didn't live up to your imaginary expectations.
-
I agree with you on points 2 and 3,however this game is like the beginning of a roller coaster,we have to build up the story,i got a chance to do the moon mission, and things got quite intriguing,i also imagine the enemies should get more darker as the story continues, however I do suggest you read Grimoire cards if you really wanna get more story, they give more of an in depth story to the world of Destiny
-
Bad story or not I will buy this game for the same reason that I still watch Michael Bay movies.... great action and special effects. Sometimes good gameplay is all you need.
-
Yeah... It does all seem a bit generic and uninspired right now, but I have seen some evidence of further Moon missions that become a little more intriguing. I'd just advise one thing on the narrative front: whilst Bungie excels at world-building, and we can expect a riveting plot, backstory and atmosphere, don't go expecting much in the way of character development. Reach was supposedly Bungie's most character driven game ever, and the only character with any inkling of an arc was Emile, who started off as the most nauseatingly cliche of the lot and was still a hollering moron when he died. But clearly Jorge's death affected him.
-
5 RepliesAs far as story goes, I just really want to know who the hell that woman from the tutorial mission and moon mission is.

4 RepliesEdited by bucktoothewok: 7/28/2014 11:32:58 PMu have no clue dude.
-
1 ReplyI'm hoping they where skimping on the story deliberately for the beta as to not spoil the final game.
-
1 ReplyThe beta is the finished product? Do you know what a beta is?
-
I honestly think were missing a lot of the story. What happened to that awoken dude who was like "out hur in da wild this iz how we talk!" That defiantly looked like old Russia and the beta already took us to the moon...
