Sunday is International Literacy Day! We recommend taking the opportunity to curl up with with a warm cup of coffee, a comfy chair, and a favorite classic. Of course, this holiday is bittersweet - We know we'll be celebrating accordingly, but many Americans won't be able to do so.
According to a study conducted in late April by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, 32 million adults in the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population. 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read.
The current literacy rate isn't any better than it was 10 years ago. According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (completed most recently in 2003, and before that, in 1992), 14 percent of adult Americans demonstrated a "below basic" literacy level in 2003, and 29 percent exhibited a "basic" reading level.
We probably don't need to spell out the benefits of reading and writing for you. Economic security, access to health care, and the ability to actively participate in civic life all depend on a individual's ability to read.
According to the Department of Justice, "The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure." The stats back up this claim: 85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, and over 70 percent of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level, according to BeginToRead.com.
1 ReplyAnd your last President was one of them.
-
2 RepliesI picked up reading at a young age. When I was in first grade I could read at a fifth grade level.
-
1 ReplyAnd most of that stat are illegal immigrants.
-
2 RepliesThe study claims an official source, links to it... and the link to the source isn't actually the source, just another website claiming that it was done. And that site has no citation of the study, either.
-
16 RepliesAbout the same percentage as the United Kingdom, what's your point? So before everyone starts saying lolamerica, realize most first world countries like America and United Kingdom have around the same literacy rate.
-
Does this include immigrants? I'm too lazy to read
-
1 ReplyIt'd be funny if it was trailer trash making up that statistic. It would be a sign of systematic racism and muh oppression if it were minorities making up that statistic. Better check yourself Dustin, you're laughing "youths."
-
10 RepliesDustin, no one gives a shit, k? Being brutally honest.
-
3 Replies
32 million American adults can't read
Wait, isn't that around the same number of Americans who were uninsured prior to the ACA? The game is afoot!
-
1 ReplyThis is new? -_-

I would comment, but I can't read the article.

Again, the right to vote should be restricted to those that complete (pass) our free education system.

Edited by Jor El: 5/20/2014 3:01:22 AMThis is your uncle Solly, reminding you that if you purposefully fail a literacy test, your draft card is invalid and you cannot be shipped in the event of WWIII.

And I'm one of them. I've been paying an Asian friend for 7 years to type all my responses for me.
-
Wait, poor people can't read? This is news to me!
-
my parents never taught me how to speak soooo
-
I'm not -blam!-ing surprised. Every goddam day when I buy shit the person in front of me has to redo the transaction because they swiped their credit card and selected debit because it was -blam!-ing green and they didn't/couldn't read the word 'Debit' on the button they were pressing.

1 Reply1) Huffington Post...lol! 2) Math is wrong. The USA has over 330 mil people. 32 mil is 14%?
Me fail English! That unpossible! - Ralph Wiggum
3 RepliesSo, it's the same as the UK then? Why is this such a big deal? And why are you still using Huffington Post?

32 million adults in the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population.
I find this study very difficult to believe.
