So I'm going into an apartment building to give somebody something. (What I'm doing is unimportant.) (Also, I've been to this building enough to know these guys didn't live there.)
Anyways, there's these two black dudes drinking beer at the entrance. So I just walk right between them, and figuring they lived there or were waiting for somebody from the building, I ask them if they want to enter as I open the lobby door with a key. So they say yes and that they need to "get the" and his friend tells him (in their language) "letter". The guy that didn't finish his sentence comes in behind me and the other stays outside. (They're Africans, I'm not sure what language they were speaking.)
I've lived in enough bad neighborhoods to know that they could very well be trying to invade someone's home and that the other guy is on look out duty. But I pride myself in not judging people too quickly and told myself I'm being prejudiced thinking that simply because they're drinking beer and hanging out in the entrance they're thugs or criminals. They didn't seem like crooks so I just got in the elevator and went to the floor I needed to go to. Still, it seemed like something was up and I had a bad feeling.
So I gave the thing to the person I needed to give it to (no, I'm not committing a crime, I just value my privacy and I'm a little paranoid), then I got back in the elevator and went down. I took about 45 seconds in between going up to the necessary floor and taking care of business, then going back down.
So the elevator door opens and I see the guy I let in fucking around with the mail boxes. He turns around real fast and then says "One, two" (in English, which is strange) and counts on his fingers as if he were working on the mail boxes or something. He kind of hurried out of the lobby and I noticed the two mailboxes he was messing with had their locks broken. One said "Community" and the other was blank. I checked them and both were empty. Apparently they were stealing something, but I'm not sure what or why.
I'm kind of left here wondering if in my attempt to not judge people, I may have helped these people commit a crime of some sort. So, Flood, would you have let that man in? Yes? No? And why?

1 ReplyDon't let anyone in who doesn't have keys.

7 RepliesThis whole story reeks of contrivances and misgiving details, I'm not sure what to make of any of it really. Even when you took the time to explain something my imagination isn't doing a great job on interpreting the explanation in a mental image.

3 RepliesOddly specific place for them to rob. Say you didn't come by and no one else was going to for a little while, did they just plan on waiting until eventually someone let them in?

3 RepliesNo. If they were residents they have a way to open the doors themselves, if they were expected by someone then they have another way to get in.
