So for Christmas my mom got a Blu-ray player and some Blu-rays to go along with it for both me and my dad. So I had to choose the movies and whatnot because she doesn't know what we watch. So of course, I picked out some good anime movies (Evangelion 1.11, 2.22, and Akira...which I watched tonight, it was alright).
So ya know, I watch anime, alone, with headphones on, and I don't like people to know what I'm watching it. Why? I have no clue. I'm not watching anything wrong (no, I swear hentai isn't my thing).
ANYWAYS, me and my dad sat down and watched those 3 anime movies that I mentioned above...in the main living room on the main TV, in the open, and no headphones on (obviously). Sure I enjoyed the movies, especially the Evangelion movies, because those are some of my favorite movies in general. But it felt weird and uncomfortable, and I have no idea why. We were both watching the movies and paying attention, and he wasn't mocking them or anything (except when the appropriate times come up, like in a few scenes from the Evangelion movies). So I dunno.
ONE MORE THING. Tonight me and my dad also went to MovieStop to buy some movies because I got a gift card. So ya know, we picked out some regular movies, but mainly anime - and that was the first time that I actually bought anime from a retail store. It just felt, again, weird and uncomfortable, and I have no idea why.
Never the less, I don't think I'll be doing either again. I guess I just like my anime watching to be private, even though it's nothing wrong. I dunno.
Does anybody feel this same way? I know I can't be alone here.

TL;DR But I read the title. So I have this to say: Smoking a joint while naked in bed with my girlfriend while watching Princess Mononoke is amazing and not awkward at all.

It's called insecurity. You are use to watching alone that you become accustomed to it. When others start to watch what you are watching you start to become embarrassed because you don't know if they feel the same way you do. You are scared of what they might think of you for liking something different.

The only time I watched anime with someone was in 7th grade when naruto was on Cartoon Network. Looked forward to it every week then he moved. I would find it very awkward to watch anime with people as anime is very AWKWARD
-
Obviously you're embarrassed that you watch it. You may think your not, maybe you aren't, but your obviously not very comfortable watching it with other people or even with people knowing you watch it.
-
It's cartoon porn what did you expect

I swear I can feel their eyes judging me.

Edited by Geth: 12/29/2013 9:04:29 AMI've only watched anime with 2 of my cousins. And we use to watch them all the time. Comfortable with them just because their more socially awkward than I am.

My school has an anime club that meets every week and is actually kind of big. I'm not in it (although I am in a sci-fi club that meets weekly and is basically just taking an hour every week to watch geeky Youtube videos and Doctor Who,) but I'd imagine something like that would be less awkward than watching it with my parents. (I can only imagine if my parents were reading Homestuck with me. Ugh...)
-
I don't live with my parents, my girlfriend though, I feel a little weird because she is Japanese, but she says anime is ok but I feel like she hides her liking for it because she feels ashamed that I know she likes anime. Just weird.

4 RepliesMeh, I'd watch it with anyone but my parents.

Edited by salvucci91: 12/29/2013 5:14:56 AMYou have to watch it with people who understand it.
Also, those fights are incredible.
2 RepliesMe and my brother watch atla and Korra all the time. My little brother and sister watch it sometimes too. My parents like it. (It is one of the better shows kids can watch nowadays) Me and my brother have watched episodes of other anime's as well. My parents know I watch sexual, wacky shows. I mean I watched Spartacus and Games of Thrones with my dad and older brother. Even through the gay scenes. That got a little weird but hey.

3 RepliesMy mom watches shitty anime ive never heard of... i get embarrassed for her.

I'm watched yu-gi-oh and naruto with a bunch of friends and nothing feels different. some of them don't even watch the series but we still have fun with it.
-
So you are insecure over a show?
-
Yeah I'd agree. Watching anime with anyone is -blam!-ing weird. At least with people who don't watch it all. It can be pretty cool with peers who do watch it though. But in public with anyone else? Forget it -blam!-.

Edited by DarkSpyda04: 12/28/2013 7:58:50 AMI'm embarrassed to even admit that I watch anime, especially when around family. Like if I run into someone that watches the same stuff that I do and my family's around, I'll just pretend I have no idea what this guy's talking about. I was the same way when I went to the Resident Evil haunted house at Universal Halloween Horror Nights and saw a bunch of fan references. I ain't never seen no T-103 super tyrant in my life, officer. I'm afraid I don't get what you're talking about. I'm just a simple boy that likes simple things is all! Why are there no memes about being a closet otaku? FUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

Yea mostly anime watching is something you done mention and watch by your self

1 ReplyEdited by The Great DanTej: 12/28/2013 8:26:56 AMI watched: Gurren Lagann and FMA:B with my little brother, we had a blast. Though beyond that, I hate watching anything with anyone else around. And never should anyone ever talk about anime in public, just trust me, don't. Back to Zeta gundam alone.

Watching anime is wrong, yeah.

4 RepliesEdited by Alphy : 12/27/2013 7:37:15 AMYeah, kinda. That's mainly one of the reasons why I asked for a laptop, so I can actually watch more, um, suggestive anime, kinda like Highschool DxD, er, something. If I were to watch that kinda of anime in the living room, yeeeah, it probably wouldn't end so well.
