The level design seems pretty simple and bland and mechanics seem simple and bland, and even the enemy functions, but when you play it is very fun, and everyone loves it. Why?

3 RepliesIt is simplistic (though certainly not bland). The gameplay isn't centered a core "gimmick" (not that games that DO focus on a gimmick can't be fun), instead focusing on distilling and solidifying what a shooter really is about, and creating a sandbox that actively encourages players to create their own fun.

Edited by iGraviton: 12/28/2013 5:29:13 AMIt's Occam's Razor at work: the simplest solution is often the correct one. Every other shooter adds Perks, XP, killstreaks, etc. Halo doesn't have any of those; It's simple, and it's works.

Because the graphics are limited to how well you can draw.

1 ReplySilly Goat, you can't play Halo on Paper! top trel

1 ReplyI don't know, I generally don't play Halo on paper.

Because simplicity works. Another factor could be that the community drives the experience (especially in Halo 3). Through custom games, forge, etc, you can always try something new and have a blast with friends. Halo is also one of those games that can be enjoyed competitively and casually. If you don't really care about the win you could go into social. If you wanted to win play competitive.

Edited by Ultra: 12/28/2013 1:20:52 AMBungie is a big studio with a AAA budget and actually has a passion for games past money. If you listen to their podcasts, you can literally hear how much love they put into the games as tho it were a form of art. Go to the Gameinformer Destiny panel and listen to the special edition podcast, you will see.

No, the books are quite interesting.

Because it's a bland and simplistic game.

12 RepliesWhat was the first Halo you played during its time?

Its because of bungie, they have a certain magic about them.
#SpæceMajix
Longer kill times make it so that you have a much larger variety of ways to react to people coming after you. In CoD, you pretty much just die if they pull the trigger first. In Halo, you can choose to return fire, retreat, move behind cover, run right at them, use one of the various armor abilities, or something entirely else. This works for Multiplayer and Custom Games, and even things like Campaign and Firefight. This is increased by the fact that you have a greater range of motion to work with. On top of all that, their are activities outside of the standard Multiplayer/Custom Game/Campaign that most FPS' have, such as Firefight/Spartan Ops./Theater/Forge. All these take up more time in unique ways, plus allowing you to further customize future games in some cases. It seems simple on the outside, but Halo is backed up by a complex series of systems that maximize the variety a player can experience, both inside and outside the actual gameplay.

Such a shit thread. Halo is one of the most revolutionary series of all time, the level design seems simple and bland because the series itself has inspired so many other games to try and emulate it. Yes, the mechanics seem simple because they are based on a winning formula, we don't need a load of gimmicky shit as proven by HR and H4. Also, Halo actually has some of the best AI mechanics in the history of FPS, and always has done.

You can make anything seem 'bland and simplistic on paper.' It's intellectually dishonest when you put entertainment that way, though.

1 Reply30 seconds of fun...

1 ReplyBecause all of that is bland. The only thing that isn't is the lore.
-
It's because it's so easily understood and grasped by the player that they feel very comfortable in the world, and it frees up their strategy planning and imagination for the rest of the game.

1 ReplyA perfect system is one that achieves a complicated task with a simple process. Game Design is very similar. The more you can accomplish with less, the better. I could talk for hours on this subject.
-
because enemy AI is better than that of COD, because fights are nore drawn out with more variety, because there are more options to choose from in how you want to kill a guy (noob combo, splatter, or freaking overpowered halo 3 scorpion tank shot)

15 RepliesIt is really simple but that's why it's good. Simplicity>unnecessary complexity.
