So I just got back from starbucks. I got my usual, large iced coffee with extra room for cream.
As im at the sugar-it-up station the woman next to me sees my sidearm. Which I carry openly for work, and tactical reasons.
I saw her brain do this
She then asks "Why do you have a gun"
To which I respond "personal protection" I guess she didn't like this answer. So she said
"I feel like I should call 911"
By this point other people are listening in / watching I tell her to call the non emergency number
"911 is to report an emergency, or a crime in progress. Neither of those things are happening here"
She sits there with a stunned / annoyed look on her face.
she retorts something like
"Well, just don't shoot the place up"
And I say slightly louder "wow, that is offensive. I'm done talking to you" and finish with my coffee and walk out the door. I saw her turn an interesting shade of red as I was leaving.
Fellow gun owners/carriers tell stories of when you shut down some ignorant / rude moron.

i would have responded to her with something like "the fact that you imply that i am a criminal just because i openly, and legally i might add, carry a weapon greatly offends me."

17 RepliesYou didn't really shut anyone down... also she is being perfectly reasonable. You have an openly carried firearm and that tends to make people nervous. You have to understand that not everyone's experience with firearms has been a positive one. Personally, I would only conceal and carry, but in Texas you have to be 21.

3 RepliesEdited by Capiton Render: 11/9/2013 3:04:24 PM>no inb4capitonsstory I have a little story. You nerds know my stance on guns, and a pretty good number know i carry a gun with a CHP. I have my reasons and they're pretty good. Well today i brought some pulled pork BBQ to work for lunch. our office admin didnt realize this, and since she carpools with her husband, she didnt have a car. She asked me to go to pick her up some Chinese food, and since we are the only ones in the office, i said "no problem". The Chinese place i went to, im a regular there, and the owners always see me open carrying when i come in. So i went in, paid, and proceeded to sit down and wait for it to be ready to take out. Across the room, were two black men and a black woman, in their mid twenties, talking about their previous experiences in live fire training in boot camp. Just to my left was a white women, in her mid forties, dressed in hospital garb, and massively over weight. The descriptions play into the story, so here it goes, it starts with the white woman asking me a question. (please note, this lady, was giving a clear attitude both in tone and body language when asking me these things.) Wlady: Excuse me (talking to me) Me: yes? Wlady: Why do you carry a gun? Me:(oh fuck, here we go) Because i can Wlady: No, i mean whats your excuse for carrying a gun? (at this point the group of three military people across fell silent and started listening) Me: Well, its not really your business, but ill tell you, ive been robbed multiple times, had three death threats in the past 4 years, and we have had a bad string of crime in my neighborhood, and in the area i work in recently. Wlady: Oh ok...( I sensed she was disappointed that i had a valid reason for carrying, even though it wasnt her business in the first place. ) The man cooking called for my order to pick up, i proceeded to walk to the counter, grab it, and turned towards her before i walked out, and paused.(lets note at this point she was starring at my, giving me an ugly look, but it may have just been that she was ugly.) Me: can i ask you a question? Wlady: yes? Me: Why are you fat? The three other people started laughing out loud as i walked out, and the lady was pitching a fit. Thought id share the story, since i thought it was funny. But here is the discussion value. Was it rude of her in the first place to ask me this, was it her business to question my reasoning? do you think my response after explaining was appropriate, especially considering both situations are a matter of choice? 1 ReplyWell I like your response though. But how tactical is open carrying?
it's not
You just let the bad guys know who to shoot first. -Fellow ccw holder

"wow, that is offensive. I'm done talking to you" and finish with my coffee and walk out the door.
That is the furthest thing from "shutting someone down" as it can get.

6 RepliesShe is a stupid idiot. I live in Indiana. I do not open carry. I wear a shoulder holster under my suit coat. I have only had one experience similar to what happened to you. When the dumbass that I encountered said "do I need to worry about you?" I said "you are an ignorant fück, you need to worry about yourself moron." My interaction was man to man and so was I'm sure more about calling each other out. But have you considered closed carry or wearing a coat over your holster? Not that I think you should HAVE to, but I almost never have idiots say things to me. I'm not sure what part of the country you live in, but Indiana is pretty conservative and rural; most of us hunt or have experience with firearms.
