Personally I would like to see the armor have stats or bonuses unique to the piece of armor you have or armors that utilize point allocation to it as it levels up. For example, as your personal level increases you attain armor points that could be allocated to armor rating, resistance to physical damage, resistance to energy damage, armor piercing resistance, explosive resistance, health increase, posssibly stamina and mana increase, for lack of a better word. This way you can find stronger pieces of equipment, level them up according to your preferred play style. This adds to another aspect of the game that increases replay value.
If you see or hear about a really tough, rare chest piece that adds a small bonus to armor piercing rounds, go search it out and then upgrade it to your tastes as you level it up, maybe adding a resistance to explosive damage a few levels later. Even if someone wears the same armor, the traits it carries create a more unique pool of stats and abilities you can call your own. I want there to be options for customization aesthetically too but in my opinion, armor should be graded as weapons are in the game.
If you don't like the armor you are not forced to use it as its stat boosts are minimal. They won't significantly affect your overall personal stats that are separate from the armor. The primary stats are derived from personal upgrades, but armor adds bonuses to top the larger stats off with incentive to search the items out, upgrade them through their use in battle, and selecting the bonuses that fit you as gamer most.
I feel I need to give an example of what I am saying and I am going to use generic terms so bear with me. And the upgrading of weapons is a sure thing so the scenario will regard armor.
I am a level 20 Hunter. Currently I am wearing Armor A. It's item level is 200 (we noticed weapons had levels like this; the burst weapon was level 70 and the Thunderlord was a level 200) and it offers a bonus of +4 to my personal armor rating of 50. To top that off, I am on my third upgrade for this armor, as I have had it for the last few personal levels and the experience gained while wearing it has unlocked upgrades (we saw 11 upgrades I believe on the Thunderlord weapon in gameplay). With those bonuses unlocked, my armor has obtained stats exclusive to the piece itself. With improved dampening enhancements to the shoulder pieces, I have reduced recoil by 10%. And I have also increased my health of 300 points to 310 with a minor health boost.
After exploring an old warehouse, I have found Armor B, I will call it, and it has an item level of 210 and it only adds a bonus of +2 to my personal armor rating. Now my armor has dropped from 54 to 52, insignificant and worth the sacrifice for the bonuses I can unlock, I switch armors. I no longer have the bonuses of 10% recoil reduction and +10 health points. With no upgrades unlocked, all I have with this new Armor B is a small boost of armor. But ahead on the upgrade trail, I see that this armor has a plus 5 points of damage per bullet on upgrade 6 and on upgrade 9, my critical chances are increased by 5%.
Now I hope that many of you can get an idea of the boosts I am talking about. Now, if I prefer the way the Armor A looks over Armor B, I can stick with it. The bonuses offered are merely slight stat increases. If I decide to go with Armor A, I like my appearance and the stat bonuses obtainable in Armor B are hardly significant enough to mess with my personal stats. And if someone else I encounter has Armor B, it's no big deal. He only has a +2 boost to armor to my +4. I have boosts to recoil reduction and health. He has boosts to damage and critical chance. Hardly an imbalance when I still have something he doesn't have. But still, the bonuses are bonuses added to the personal statistics and attributes. They simply add a minor boost to a few particular stats.
I hope this makes sense to you.

2 RepliesPlease do not bump year-old threads. The content and discussion is out-of-date and mostly based on speculation.

I wouldn't like Destiny if this were to go too in depth.
-
1 ReplyAlso to add to this (if the armors have stats and are on a rating system) they should implement a "hide" helmet option. I hate games where I make a very unique characters face and I have to hide my creation with a helmet just to get stats...
-
I would like two sets of armor: One for venturing outside the city, an another for schmoozing around the Tower.
-
2 RepliesI just want my armor to be fully customizable at any level i don't want a lvl like 3 armor that looks better than lvl 20 armor and have to choose between cool armor or strong armor. I'm sure most of you would agree
-
why cant it be both, so have graded armour with specific details and architecture but the player can change the color pallete?
-
In my opinion, armor should have stats and bonuses in-game, but when you go into pvp it is just cosmetic to make it fair for everyone.
-
If you look how armor is dealt with in DC Universe Online you can see that it can be both. Each piece of armor comes with a set style that is saved to your character once you equipped it. Once you find an upgrade piece but you prefer the look of your old gloves you set the style while keeping the stats of the new piece. This way you can truly customize your character while progressing. I would prefer a system similar to this.

It could be like you can have two pieces of armor on like one purely for cosmetics but not with good stats and the other giving you its great stats but not showing

TL;DR

4 RepliesBoth. Didn't the gameplay video show the armor pieces at various levels?

stats because cosmetic is pointless. Wish defiance would of had stats on gear.

1 ReplyGraded. As someone else has said, if my starter set of armour is the same as a legendary piece hidden in a hard-arse dungeon, then what's the point of attempting to seek it out?

4 RepliesEdited by Bike Scruffy: 4/8/2014 10:54:18 PMmost people are il informed they choose graded without thinking if armor was graded it would take the creative side out of things people would automatically equip the best armor with the best stats regardless of appearance, example would be world of Warcraft, my characters gear is purely based off of the stats the armor gives and not how it looks, and too do everyone else go by the same rules in the game, I'm glad destiny is focusing on purely aesthetic armor, it allows expression of personality to a players character Bungie get this, that's why their a great developer.

Edited by Galahad: 4/27/2014 5:16:30 PMIt's better to have stats and appearance separated from each other. Otherwise we'll end up looking the same at some point. Locking down both things would be a terrible move for Destiny, especially with the "Become Legend" mantra; minor bonuses or not, there's a LOT of min-maxers out there. Besides, do all legends look the same to you?
-
Edited by blAcKnaRoCk: 4/26/2014 2:01:37 AMI think more aesthetic than everything. You have armor pieces for torso, arms legs, etc. But you can only wear one. So you only get one or two bonuses.

12 RepliesCosmetic. I hate having to choose between looking good and being good.
-
1 ReplyI really don't want to have to decide what to wear because of stats. If I find something that looks badass, I don't want to have to give it up simply because it's underpowered. I want to upgrade stats for my CHARACTER, not materials (except guns).
-
I'm almost positive I heard the armor is purely cosmetic, which I would have to agree with because if they are graded then I would still have to choose the best armor to give me the upper hand in battle, not the armor that I like the most. The purpose of those rare pieces of armor that you find being only cosmetic is exactly that: they are rare and as bungie stresses they tell a story about your travels throughout the world of destiny.
-
Graded but with a cosmetic aspect. I'd like to have unique armor names and specs etc. But I don't want to be tied to the colors/logo's etc. on the armor. I'm OK with the fact that another armor will have another shape. But I'd rather not have to walk around wearing an green chest plate with orange pants. To put it simply: I want to be able to costumize every piece of armor, although it would be cool, I don't need the shape changeable, I do however want to be able to costumize decorations and colors, this way you can still make armor that truly feels like your own, yet have differences in armor that give you a reason to go to the furthest dephts of the solar system seeking that amazing armor you heard a rumour about. What do you guys think? be brave.
-
2 RepliesDidn't Bungie say that armor was purely cosmetic? I could swear I heard that.
-
I say while yes in guns we saw perks that seem to add stats and change slightly the appearance why not do the opposite with armor have perks that actually change the look of the armor so we can make are own personal appearance appealing to ate eye and make only slight changes in stats that help but don't make it so you have to change your play style to the armor your wearing
-
Didn't read all of that, but I want cosmetics, or at least less stress on armor ratings and stats. Think about Skyrim. You get the top armor and get bored of looking at it. Customizable armor with stats would be cool though. What if armor A could have 50 different combination looks, but still have the same rating. Epic.
-
2 RepliesIf armour was purely cosmetic, I don't know, it would not make me want to go and seek out hard to get armour. I mean if tattered brown blood-stained Warlock robes have the same stats as pure titanium badass Warlock robes of explosions, then I see no real point in risking my digital life fighting my way to the end of a dungeon/whatever and beating a hard boss for something on the same level as tattered brown robes. If you get what I mean? The incentive just would not be there/be lessened.

1 Replycosmetic armor => DLC graded armor => rest of the experience
