So can anyone explain to me why Superman is considered a boring character?

Holy sh1t. At school it's like the Batman fanboys were crawling out from under some rock or something. As a Superman fan, I obviously debated for Superman. But what I found was that the number 1 complaint/argument/damn near crutch factor was that Superman was just "boring." Why? Here's some responses I got. "Superman is boring as he has too many powers." "Batman fights without powers. Superman lives an easier life because he has powers." "Batman is more relatable and human than Superman because Superman is a flawless character." And after scrolling through some internet forums, I got the same answers. Here's what I have to say:
"Superman is boring as he has too many powers."
Oh, and Batman's "prep time," utility belt, and ridiculous plot shielding are perfectly fine? Superman's powers shouldn't demerit him in any way if his foes are just as powerful. His powers don't just erase the value of the plot's conflict.
"Batman fights without powers. Superman lives an easier life because he has powers."
At first glance, this may seem like a branch off of the first quote. But it's actually different. What the guy is trying to say is that Batman is more interesting because the odds are almost always completely against him. That's a pile of horsesh1t. Superman has fought foes that could kill him just as easily as Batman's nemeses.
"Batman is more relatable and human than Superman, because Superman is a flawless character."
This is the number one argument. The thing is, I agree that Batman is a more relatable and human character than Superman. But what makes me love Superman more is that while he's not the most human, he's the most humane. He's not from this world, not even from this species, and he'll go to any lengths to protect the human race. He is the last of his kind, and despite that pressure, he dons his cape. He is an absolutely incorruptible, truly good hearted person that will go to any length to protect the people that he loves and the people he doesn't, and in the face of all that, he leads a lonely, sad life. That is why Superman resonates so well with me. His flaw is that at his core, he's a good person. To end this off, let me sum up this paragraph with a quote from Bruce Wayne himself:
If Clark wanted to, he could use his superspeed and squish me into the cement. But I know how he thinks. Even more than the Kryptonite, he's got one big weakness. Deep down, Clark's essentially a good person... and deep down, I'm not.
So Flood, what do you think? Is Superman truly boring?

  • Superman can't die. He's too overpowered. That's why I personally find him not very exciting. With Batman it's always a struggle, often of the mind. With Superman it's just... how man times does he need to punch something. There's not much to him.

              • Nearly every superhero character is boring to some extent, in my opinion anyways. It's all about preference. Personally, I find nearly every character from the DC universe quite boring, not all but a lot, and yes that INCLUDES batman.

                • Superman is pretty boring as a character in alot of interpretations of him. This includes the movies and the DCAU Superman (so pretty much the only exposure to the character that most people have). You can't expect people with opinions about comic book character to have actually ever read a comic.

                • It's harder to connect with Superman because he's, well, super. Also the Batman movies have been happening and the Superman movies lacking.

                  • This thread felt like it was attacking Batman and his fans rather than a debunk of the Superman whiners... OT: Both are incomparable really. Batman represents the human element in all of us, and is basically a massive allegory for humanity. He uses brains over brawn to solve problems, as do we in the animal kingdom. So in essence, Batman is the most relatable character. Superman is different in regard that he's a symbol. He was never meant to be relatable in the aspect that Batman is. That always seems to fly straight over the Superman whiners' heads. It sounds cheesy, but he is the definitive metaphor for all that is good and just in the world, and what we should aspire to in life.

He's too perfect. I like Batman because he's borderline insane, he teeters on the line that separates him from the criminals and psychopaths he fights. Superman is almost ALWAYS in the right (obvious exceptions), he is almost completely flawless, I like heroes I can relate too, and most people can't relate to perfection. I'm not saying he's a boring character, just saying why I prefer Batman. Another thing I like about Batman is that Batman is the real person, Bruce Wayne is the mask, and he struggles with that.

                      • The fact that the idea of the superhero comes from him in the first place leaves him bland and generic. He's also an insufferable good guy - I don't like Batman, but at least he has some antihero elements, and isn't such a goddamn boy scout.

Batman's solution to problems involve using stealth, his fighting skill, his intellect, and his gadgets. Superman's solution to problems involve being strong. That's a pretty big one against wanting to follow any Superman story. If he's at a disadvantage, he suddenly realizes he's actually stronger than we thought. Darkseid merged with Brainiac and threatening the Earth? Superman reveals that every single fight before, when he was on the verge of death, he was actually fibbing, he's actually living in a house of cardboard and was playing around the whole time. That's just one thing though. The point about him not being relatable is relevant... not as a person (because I can't relate to being a billionaire either), but in the problems he faces. I've never had to struggle with overwhelming power not knowing what to do with it (because I have a pretty good idea, and it'd look something more like Death Note). I can relate to being consumed by something to the point where I neglect everything else in life, relate to questioning whether how far is it worth going to do the right thing, relate to feeling like the existing systems in place are corrupt, etc. Critics and viewers alike favor Batman over Superman. I honestly don't understand how someone could fanboy Superman over Batman.

                            • Perhaps if some movie or whatever explored Superman's mind and ideals and why he just doesn't blow the world up for shits and giggles one day would be interesting. But in combat, provided there is sunshine to be absorbed and no kryptonite, he'll never lose. Ever. Boring.

                            • Because of the whole "Superman being perfect is what makes him so human." IMO, that's a stretch. Even if it were a solid plot and character basis, they've been using it for 75 years. 75 years of the same thing. Any character would wear out after that. It's the same thing as DBZ. Superman is the most powerful being ever. Until a bad guy shows up who happens to be the most powerful being ever. Superman gets beat down. loljk Superman wins and is once again the most powerful being ever. Repeat. It's the same tired thing over and over and over again. And the issue with Superman that most characters don't have is his extremely limited weaknesses. Batman could be killed by a bullet, or a knife, or a fall. You know he never will, but the fact remains that he could. Most superheros could be killed by just about anything, despite the fact that they're more resilient than a regular human. Even people like Deadpool or Wolverine could theoretically be incinerated to the point of regeneration being impossible. It never will happen (or if it does, they'll just be brought back), but it could. But not Supes. There are very few things that could take him down. And those same few things have been used to drive the same one point of Superman being the most human hero, for 75 years.

He gets his power from the sun so he does have a small weak spot also with kyrptonite but you would need enough of it to weaken him also it is very hard to come by...not only that but he has ALOT of superpowers...

                              • To me, he's overrated, hes indestructible unless you have a big enough rock of kryptonite depending on the writer or continue hit him and not let him recharge in the sun. I like batman more because i think he is a stronger symbol than superman is
