Pay difference between US military and Canadian Forces soldiers

This post is long, mainly because of the list. This is of the pay grade differences between a US Army Non-commissioned Officer and a Canadian Forces Non-commissioned Member (Regular). I want to know if anyone understands why the US pays so little to their soldiers while Canada pays so much to their's. (List only goes up to the rank of Sergeant) U.S. Army: Private (E1) $18,194** — — Private (E2) $20,398 $20,398 $20,398 Private First Class(E3) $21,449 $24,178 $24,178 Specialist or Corporal (E4) $23,756 $27,659 $28,840 Sergeant (E5) $25,913 $30,359 $32,490 Staff Sergeant (E6) $28,285 $33,833 $35,226 (http://www.goarmy.com/benefits/money/basic-pay-active-duty-soldiers.html) Canadian Forces: Payment is per monthly; increased pay is by year of time served Private 1 $2751 2 $3363 3 $4039 Corporal 5A BASIC $4622 1 $4689 2 $4758 3 $4824 4 $4888 Master Corporal 5B BASIC $4816 1 $4883 2 $4946 3 $5016 4 $5084 Sergeant 6A BASIC 1 $5363 2 $5417 3 $5475 4 $5527 (http://www.forces.ca/en/page/payscales-131#ncmsregular-3) Why is there this massive gap in pay grades?! The basic private in the CF earns more than a US private. No one can live like this, at all. If anyone knows why the US is paying so little to their soldiers please, please tell me. As a Canadian, I though both military's paid $30,000 as the base salary. Apparently not.

because we know how to manage our budget correctly, and we have a smaller population with higher taxes, that's why Canadian soldiers are paid more... somehow

  • Because they spend most of the budget on ways to fight terrorism and spread democracy all across the land.

    • I can honestly say I live fine with my pay that the Navy gives me. I have a little over $1000 in my checking account right now with $750 in savings right now. I go out all the time and order food as well. Honestly, I'd say I'm being spoiled. I only have a couple of bills to worry about and I have great benefits, it's honestly awesome. I love how the military treats me.

    • I think the American in forces pay very little if any in taxes and they also get a lot of other benefits...but I cant say how much it equates to.

      • Base pay doesn't include living expenses, or other bonus from specializations, danger pay, qualifications, clearance level, etc. Also note, the majority of US military PVTs live in an on base apartment, which is payed for, that includes water and electricity as well. Don't forget they pay less taxes as well.

      • Base pay is just that: base pay. It doesn't include allowances for housing and travel, nor does it include bonuses for job types (hazard pay, etc.), and the insurance benefits are substantial.

      • I think its a shame that politicians get paid more than the ones protecting our freedom

      • Actually, the American Private makes more money than he needs to spend without dependents, considering he has zero expenses to speak of.

        • Your base pay doesn't include the non-taxable allowances that you receive in the US military. My husband gets about $2,300 more than his base pay that's non-taxable. He's in the US Army.

        • Because the American military is mismanaged.
