Im greatly disappointed that Bungie lied a few weeks back when they said Checkmate wasn’t going to replace the base PvP experience since they are now going back on their word and forcefully implementing checkmate across the board.
I believe checkmate has a place in pvp, but it should not be the standard crucible experience!
As a dedicated pvp player, my opinion is that checkmate should only be featured in competitive playlists (3v3, trials, comp). For regular quickplay playlists (ie: control, clash, rumble) it should stay as we know it - just standard/regular crucible.
Here are some specific checkmate related feedback:
- special ammo implementation is extremely flawed since it results in snowballing issues. Just make it so that you spawn with special ammo, and when you kill someone you can pick up their brick. I dont see the need to mess with this at all.
- limited special ammo, abilities, higher HP, and longer time-to-kills encourage passive team-shooting and lane-ing. This will result in extremely boring 6v6 games. This is why control, clash, etc should not be checkmate.
- checkmate destroys player expression and build-crafting. Players will default to either movement exotics (tranvsersive steps, dunemarchers, peacekeepers, stompees, etc.) or exotics that grant extra ability charges (armamentarium, sixth coyote, starfire protocol). We should be able to mess around in a 6v6 game with fun wacky builds.
The only thing I like about checkmate is the reduced ability usage, however I want to emphasize that this should only be in competitive settings (3v3, trials, comp). For regular quickplay, we should be able to have fun with our abilities on regular cooldowns.

1 ReplyAll the reasons you used for not making if a default playlist IS the reason they are doing it. People are fed up being killed with one shot abilities/guns and people are leaving. They want a healthy player base and with current setup is not possible. New players are leaving as soon as they step foot in PvP as they don't stand a chance. It's not good in the long run.

1 ReplyBeen playing a bow main since forsaken and this will essentially make it unplayable as the bows got a 15% nerf across the board . While just about everything else got a buff in the crit department. Bows will essentially be just charged hand cannons

5 RepliesCheckmate isn’t becoming the new mode,it’s a mix of checkmate with what we have now.

1 ReplyD2 pvp being the Marathon beta in disguise is kinda lame

14 Replies-Not Checkmate -Use whatever build you want. Nobody cares. -Special ammo change good. -Skill Gap lengthening is a fantastic thing (you didn't mention this but it's the reason they're doing what they're doing.) People will adapt to it and be fine or won't and quit but one thing FOR CERTAIN was that change was necessary and I think the direction they're going is good for longtime fans of pvp.
