Accessibility Issue : Trypophobia

EDIT: To everyone shouting "entitled" and "this affects no one", it actually affects about 1 in 6 people, or about 17%, which is kind of a lot... If this doesn't affect you, then please either be supportive or kindly move along. I had heard this was a kind and supportive community, but so far I'm not seeing that here. ***Original post*** Parts of Destiny 2 are potentially unplayable for people with Trypophobia. For those unfamiliar, trypophobia is the repulsiton / aversion to clustered hole textures. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trypophobia I barely made it through the intro quest because when I got to the "learning light" meditation sequence due to the amount of triggering textures all over the walls and floors everywhere, and I like to think my sensitivity here is pretty mild compared to most. Screenshots included. There really needs to be a setting to turn that stuff off, because you are alienating a great many individuals that you could easily accommodate by using accessible textures instead. I realize that look is part of the identity for this hive species, but with everything else they have going on, I don't think the added little spore barnacles are totally necessary to maintain the spooky aesthetic, particularly considering how much of a negative impact it has on some players. For example, the Witch Queen throne world has a lot less of this (still areas that are a no no), and still feels totally in immersive. Please be considerate of those who suffer from this @bungie and implement a fix. As of now, anything involving the hive is essentially off limits anyone with this sensitivity. Happy to talk more.

  • Arachnophobia is definitely more common and they literally have a spider sparrow and several other spider related cosmetics. Thalassophobia? We had an entire season dedicated to diving deep under an ocean. Acrophobia? How many jumping puzzles with bottomless pits are in the game? Sorry, but they aren't gonna retexture the game for that phobia.

  • If you want them to listen, this isn’t the right tactic. You need to say something about rainbows and things like that to get their attention.

  • I have a fear of smooth surfaces, and the only thing that calms me are rough, pitted surfaces. Now what? Who should Bungie cater to? In case you are wondering - it is neither of us….

  • This has to be a joke. You actually think that people should cater to you because “I have an Irrational Fear”. I’m not going to be a boomer and say get over it, but the fact of the matter is that it’s irrational, and thus, little action should be taken to cater to that irrationality. It’s not rational to do so.

If this helps, a phobia is specifically defined as an irrational fear of something, meaning that the fear of the topic or object in question either makes no sense realistically or the magnitude of the fear is significantly higher than what would be typical (i.e. it’s perfectly normal to be a bit afraid of spiders, but having a panic attack at the sight or even thought of one is an irrational phobia). There’s many years or psychological research on the topic of behavioral therapy and how behavioral interventions can be used with great success in reducing and even eliminating phobias. I truly don’t think you’re really trying to play the victim here, but whether you are or not, I think it would likely do you some good to work to overcome this irrational fear instead of sitting in it and accepting it as an unchangeable truth about yourself, which it’s not. Systematic desensitization is the specific technique I’m referencing, in which an individual is gradually exposed to more and more stimulating instances of the target of the phobia until they eventually realize the irrationality of their fear and learn to cope with it by their own strength. You don’t have to let this hold you back from enjoying a great game. <3

I'm calling bullshit. I doubt 1 in 6 have an actual phobia. Most of those people probably just don't like the look of the texture or pattern. Edit: called it https://www.sciencealert.com/trypophobia-not-phobia-based-on-fear-disgust-response

      • Imagine asking a game developer to add a "remove texture" feature because of your own minor discomfort. The world and everything in it does not owe you any adjustments or special treatment. This is a simple case of "if it makes you feel uncomfortable, move onto something else" When did everyone become so entitled with their own shortcomings that they genuinely feel EVERYTHING has to change? Entitlement at its finest, wether you like it or not.

I have Trypophobia and have had no issues playing Destiny 1 or 2. It’s just a game, not real life. The only thing that makes me feel weird about trypophobia is if I see like a photoshop of, say, a bee hive on someone’s arm. Video games are not real and therefore shouldn’t trigger your phobia. Bungie isn’t going to change their whole game just cause some people can’t stomach a certain texture.

          • Or just don’t play… you really think they are going to throw money at a redesign for the 10 people with that issue… and I imagine 90% of those people can cope perfectly fine.. stop being so entitled

                  • You forgot to post the "dozens of us" gif. If devs don't care about arachnophobia, that is actually recognized as a real phobia and a ton lot more people suffer from, what makes you think they would care about a pseudophobia (it's not officially recognized) of holes grouped together?
