How To Be Less Bad At PVP

I played a lot of Solo Trials this weekend, and I have been disappointed by some of the decisions my teammates have made. Here is the advice I wish those new to PVP would follow: Always: 1) Play near cover. 2) When you hear your teammates engaging, do your best to get involved and deal some damage. Even a single shot will distract the enemy and can give your teammate the upper hand. 3) Don't try to get every -blam!-. Leaving someone weak for your teammate to clean up is just as good. Take your 2 or 3 shots, then return to cover. Staying too long in the open is bad. 4) Play the objective. You don't have to sit on the zone, but playing on the same side of the map as the zone can give your team the advantage. It's usually easier to defend an area than push into an area. 5) Play on the same side of the map as your team.. This will result in more team shots and easier revives. It also prevents 3v1 situations at the start of rounds. 6) Control the middle of the map instead of trying to flank. There are more angles in the middle, and team shooting is often easier when done from the middle. Flanking gives the enemy time to play a 3v2, and then, if they notice you flanking, a 3v1. 7) Don't group too closely with your team, especially behind the same piece of cover. Grenades can hit both of you, and it's easy for 1 person to pin down 2 people when they're challenging from the exact same angle. 8) Use a loadout that helps you counter the meta (what is most commonly used). 9) Use a super with a fast cooldown. It's better to get a bad super every game rather than risking not getting your super at all. When LFGing: 10) When possible, use a "normal" loadout. This allows your teammates to play off of you more easily, even when they are unfamiliar with you as an individual. For example: If your teammate is a sniper, you know your teammate will challenge snipe lanes. 11) Use a loadout that allows you to deal consistent damage. You don't want to miss out on kills, because you can't deal damage right away or you can't land your shots. Stay away from weapons that can't deal damage consistently (like Jotunn). When in a Fireteam: 12) Discuss an initial plan. It can be simple, but it helps to know who is doing what. When things go wrong, adjust your strategy. 13) Communicate specific information like enemy weapons, positions, health, and abilities like Decoy, Rift, or Barricade, but it's best to let people focus on the game. Some information is good, ALL the information is bad. Usually, the most important information is which special weapons are being used. 14) Remember what your teammates are using. You can use that information to predict how they will play. 15) Play in a party chat that is focused on the game. You play better when everyone is focused, and having a conversation in the background is a great way to lose focus. (This matters most when playing a tough game) Finally, for goodness sake, DONT LEAVE GAMES EARLY. It's just a scummy thing to do.

Thanks for all the tips. Here’s why none of this will work: 1. MM is completely random so you’ll either face top tier players or run over some team that has no chance. Either way, none of the advise above will matter. 2. “Play the objective” is as specific as saying “win the game”. There are a lot of things standing in your way if you’re bad at PvP and you’re trying to play the objective. 3. Trying to engage only because your teammate is engaging might very well get you killed because you’re not prepared, you probably don’t have the same overview, you don’t know where the enemies are etc., so essentially you panic, you peek and try to help and get sniped. 4. “Control the middle of the map” … ah yes, thank you. I didn’t need to know how I’m doing this when I’m “outskilled” by m&k Cronus guardians on console. Yeah, so I’m not flanking because I don’t want to be outnumbered. So I end up being run over because I failed to take the initiative. 5. And now my loadout is supposed to counter the meta? Right. Not like it’s a skill issue or anything. If I run into a bubble with Conditional Finality, I die. If someone runs into my bubble with CF, I die. See a pattern? 6. Super cooldown … that will depend more on kills than anything else. I get games where it’s match point and I have a third of my super. Other games I get it halfway through. Other players manage to get spectral blades in trials even though it has like a 45-minute cooldown. 7. Lfg sucks. You will team up with people who are as hopeless as you are. Nobody else will have you. So when your team of 0.6 kds discusses the “plan”, remember that all your knowledge and skill has gotten you nothing but a negative kd so far. Besides, most people don’t even have or use a mic. And most of them drop out after one loss or even two rounds lost or something. Finally, as I mentioned before, the MM is arbitrary and the playlist is full of cheaters. So the best way to deal with all that is to stay the hell away.

      • Great list You should probably add not to use multiple abilities for a single kill unless there's just one opponent left

      • These are some of the more helpful advice I’ve seen, thanks for putting them up. May I ask, how ”good” you are in PvP? I know its subjective, but would just like to get some idea where your post should be reflected against. I am not great player myself, but I’ve been constantly improving, though it has been slow progress and as I played over thousand over of PvP with sub knowledge or stats, around 0.5. I started to improve after doing these: 1) when freelance didn’t exists yet, I played hundreds of games in Trials against 3 stacks with solos. I knew this and my only goal was to (not throw) get at least one kill each round. I video recorded the games and watched them later. I learned so much. My aim was terrible. My awarness was terrible. My knowledge of opponents loadout/class was terrible. My decision making skill was terrible. I learned a lot. 2) then I started learning maps. What are the lanes. How fast can you sprint from position A to B. Where and how people snipe, flank, push, how to take advantage of it. Etc. 3) I started to pay attention to metas and even further about the loadouts. Anomaly Trials weekend was eye opener for me in some way, I learned how to counter Antaeus titan and it made something click in my head. There are still people over 1.7+ KD that are so good, I just can’t do too much against their skill. And that is fine, though I have one flawless game where everyone in my team are around 1.0 and they were 1.8-2.0 and we won! So it is not impossible.. but all of this requires a lot of thought and work to make it happen. I think lot of people just go in and assume that the game should hand over the reward. Rewards have to be earned!

                    • I win by not playing. This game is for PVE not PVP they have a game for that coming out. Sure it’s cool to have crucible if people want to act like it’s a super important game mode but it’s not.

My experience this weekend was my team always outside playing team death match and it would quickly become a 1v3. Took until Sunday at 11 PM to get 7 games where my teammates always played inside which resulted in a flawless. Did experience a lot of people leaving matches for really no reason. Had a few teammates that were 1750 light.... Light level doesn't belong in trials.

4 and 5 ESPECIALLY. Whether all solos or solos and duos. And I know solos don't expect to be in a game with duos, but if you are, play with them. They're talking. You're not (probably). Don't go off on a flank. Don't go to the opposite end of the map. That is a good way to just be super energy for the opposing team.
