After seeing this post on twitter, I felt the need to throw in my 2 cents, for what it's worth. Initially, after seeing the multiple repeated posts to the BungieHelp twitter account that preceded this - namely, the repeated statements of investigating spikes in certain error codes - I suspected that it could in fact be a DDoS attack, most likely initiated, in my mind, by a player or group of players that were upset [butthurt] at Bungie for attempting to fix the glitched weapons that were in fact illegal within the game and had, up to that point, been thoroughly abused within PvP and in other activities. Personally, I viewed the use of such weapons less as abuse within PvE - though their use did indeed dilute the clout gained by completing certain higher difficulty content, but ultimately within PvE did not make it difficult or impossible for other players to actually enjoy the game as intended. In PvP, however, the outright abuse of these weapons was much worse, and is a prime example of precisely how the toxicity of a certain portion of the community can ruin what would otherwise have been a fun little glitch until it was fully fixed. I say this while admitting to managing to craft an Ammit with an aggressive frame, but I only used it in PvE and only got it to level 4 or 5 before the fixes began being implemented.
Regarding the DDoS attack, while I could certainly believe that that is what has been happening, as I know full well just how vindictive and entitled people can get when they don't get their way, I have to say that I'm not 100% convinced of the truth of the statement, and Bungie's own track record works against them in this regard. Namely, their consistent tendency to refuse to own their own mistakes, and the error codes that we've been seeing are just one such example. Many of those error codes, when looked up on Bungie's own website, will point to a client side issue, when what I've seen is that in most cases, the issue is in fact on Bungie's end, but rather than giving any real information about the nature of those issues, the information we are generally given is simply "We are investigating an increase in error codes X, Y, and Z." followed a short while later by "These issues have been resolved." I would be more willing to accept Bungie's word on matters like this if information were included in these posts as to what precisely was causing the spikes in these codes on a more consistent basis. If it's a problem on Bungie's end, then they should own it, rather than give generic responses.
If indeed it has been a series of DDoS attacks that's been plaguing the servers, then my sincere hope is that Bungie will devote as much time, energy, and resources into not only fixing the issue for the community, but also in pursuing the person or persons responsible for initiating these attacks, as they did in going after a series of cheatmakers in court. Given that DDoS attacks are a federal crime, not only in the US but also elsewhere in the world, it would warrant such a response at bare minimum.

One of the developers in the quote tweets confirmed that multiple instances of error codes in the past have actually been DDOS attacks they chose to not confirm for security reasons.
