Whats the point of SBMM if you don't lobby balance?

  • That is only part of the issue. Lobby balancing is atrocious and that is part of the whole matchmaking issue, skillbased or not. Other part of the issue are the multiplayer servers. Before they even consider anything else than best connections, they need to fix the server structure. Peer-to-peer connection does not work here, there are always that one guy or two in the lobby that eats bullets or goes to hump the walls only to then kill you from across the map through three solid walls when the server catches up. Dedicated servers with good capacity is a must before they do anything involving something else than connection-based. Issue #2, yeah the lobby balancing is -blam!-. I played a bit this weekend to utilize the double rep a bit and I won 2 games out of the first 15. A frightening amount of those were blowouts. Bungie stated directly that their aim was to have players be close to 50% wins but when I play Crucible I consistently gets put with the five lower-tiered players against the six better or a stacked team. I am average at best, I can't solo carry a six man team... My win-ratio overall over the last seasons is probably around 25%... Issue #3 is the weapon and ability balance. It's been n issue from day one and it is a thing that will probably never be solved in any multiplayer game. What developers have to do though is frequent balancing patches with small adjustments, basically the opposite to what Bungie has been doing for the last 8 years.

  • To be quite blunt, it is impossible to lobby balance, and SBMM makes it worse. Why? Simple: because SBMM can be manipulated, and people have been doing it for years. All you need is to make your worst player the lead, and you can have a stack of sweats with one subpar player destroying the other team. It's the exact reason why so many people whined about getting rid of SBMM in the first place.

      As the stats of the good players go down and the stats go up for the potatoes because of sbmm, the matchmaking is bound to end up balancing everything out to the point it was no different than cbmm. The only difference is laggier games but hey this is what you guys wanted

      • My brother in light, it is already done. Because everyone is at a similar skill level SBMM highlights player mistakes during a match. The more mistakes and bad judgement in a match the more titled the match will be. I know exactly how badly I am playing by my kda at the end. Sure there will be outlier matches. See, this community has had its hand held for so long it just expects it to continue.

        • SBMM is effectively lobby balancing. If everyone is in the same skill bracket then the games can’t be too lopsided. The point is SBMM assumes everyone is trying the same to win the game which isn’t the case.

          • What’s the point of SBMM at all? The lag in matches now is pathetic. SBMM should never take precedence over CBMM. I’d rather have my 4$$ handed to me and learn from the loss then have Titans running shoulder charge while not appearing on my map. Tis BS! The latency, the lag, SBMM is not worth it.

              • It's -blam!- -blam!- man. I don't understand. The first 2 weeks it was sweaty lobbies but good -blam!- games. Now it's mercy after mercy and the lag is so bad.

              • The point of SBMM is that it is a manipulative algorithm that forces 50% W/L ratios. There is no regard for skill, its only goal is to hinder player progress to keep you playing. The teams are rigged over half the time.

                • It's forced wins and losses with an illusion of similar skill so that casuals/bad players think they are getting better to buy more Silver and DLCs.

                  • SBMM doesn’t work, I’ve seen more than one match recently with 100 point gaps, that’s not SBMM, more over I’ve been in an alarming number of matches in progress for “quitter penalties” supposedly cutting back on that. It’s really just spawn trap the game these days.

                      • SBMM hardly works, but it’s even harder for it to work when pvp is all but dead Remove weekly bounties and seasonal challenges and the pvp player base is even smaller. I can’t imagine sitting around and saying “I want to play destiny pvp for fun”

                        • I usually play survival / elimination with one of my clan mates - we seem to usually get lobby’s that are 2 other players playing together and each team gets a blueberry. The funny thing is 1 blueberry always seems to be absolutely terrible (way below the lobby skill level) while the other seems to be really good (well above the lobby skill level). We always make jokes about which one get 😆

                            If you have 2 teams whos "skill value" is 1000 total. SBMM says spike the meta gamer is worth a 500 "skill value" therefore its a balanced & fair game to team him up with 5 thumbless blueberrys worth 100 "skill value" each. This is the problem with lobby balancing in SBMM. If we had a larger player pool this would likely not be a problem.
