Why do we call Misraaks "Mithrax"?

His name is Misraaks and yet everyone from the tower refers to him as "Mithrax". Why is that?

  • Literally because of Sjur Eido. When she captured him, he tried to throw himself off a cliff and she prevented that, made ireliis (a formal bow of peace in Eliksni culture) at him that she had learned from "flesh-lover" Eliksni (aka, House Judgment, and by extension most likely Variks himself). And she introduced herself, and tradition and honour dictated he had to introduce himself as well. Sjur in that moment, repeats his name back as "Mithrax". Interestingly, Mithrax also mispronounces Sjur as "Siyuriks".

Not everyone sound combination is present in every language. Or commonly/easily used even if it’s present. It’s why the capital of China was called “Peking” for so many years when it’s actual name is Beijing. Why the capital of Ukraine was called “Kiev” when it’s actual name is “Kyiv” (pronounced “keev”). The proper pronunciation of his name is a very unusual combination of sounds in English: meez-racks. While “mith-racksis much more common. Also (as is often the case) the spelling of his name in English does not suggest the proper pronunciation. It suggests: Miss-racks which many people will convince themselves is a mispronounced “Mithrax”.

    • Why don’t you ask the eliksni about his proper name? Then ask Eido, that scribe. She may give you some interesting info, oh bearer mine…

      • For the same reason I introduce myself to non-Spanish speakers without the accent in my name. It’s just a more comfortable human pronunciation and because of the culture difference.

      • Because that was what he was originally called, it’s how we were introduced to him. Bungie changed it essentially for a joke

        • Because humans struggle to say things properly in eliksni. Ever had someone at work (or in your class if you're younger) who has a name everyone struggles to say right so they use a nickname, or just accept that people say it wrong and roll with it rather than correct everyone they meet? It's like that

        • Does it really matter? Bungie did a trailer back in D2 Vanilla with Cayde-6, where Cayde purposely pronounced Dominus Ghaul's name as "Gary". Don't over think it...

        • That's what his name was before Bungie decided to guilt trip us by telling us we were pronouncing his name wrong.

          • They make fun of it in an opening scene this season. Part of me wants to say it was spelled ONE way earlier and then ANOTHER away later. And the later stuck. But that’s almost certainly my imagination.

            • Because we don't have the vocals to say it or understanding like the Eliksni. Even crow who does a better job then most goofs up. It's miisraskss with the hiss not miss-rax and definitely not mithrax.

            • Appaaaarently, we can’t pronounce his name. Which is funny, because my husband and I can say it fine, sooo. I’m not sure why Bungie went with that angle. It’s honestly weird and… yeah, I don’t know. It just feels like my intelligence is insulted every time they talk about his name.

                • Probably something lost in translation between Eliksni and Human Like how some things are pronounced differently in different languages in real life You will notice any human who is familiar with the Eliksni, like Crow, pronounces his name correctly

                  • Because they wanted to make humanity seem uncultured compared to the aliens, unable to say a foreign name of an ally properly.

                  • Its pretty much because its how we, humans (or awoken), say it. Its just how we pronounce it. Its kinda like how you can try to pronounce a name of someone that is from a different country.
