Is Tommy's Matchbook even remotely usable in PvP nowadays without the catalyst?

As the title says, I recently got it from the kiosk as I had taken a break in the season it was introduced so I bought it to fill my collection now that I'm playing again but now to get the catalyst I need to get 100 kills with this thing... How the hell am I supposed to do that? Disclaimer, I am just average at PvP, it's what I play the least and only touch it for weeklies and dailies or the ocassional catalyst (Why i'm doing this now) but man, this weapon just feels like complete ass, especially since I need for it to be burning me to get the extra damage in a 120 HC meta this feels unusable as I am basically giving my opponents a one or two headshot kill for free before I even get remotely close to being in effective range to kill them. Is it a meta thing? or is there a strategy to actually feel like I'm even doing anything? I feel way better with Sweet business than this because Sweet business at least has range AND doesn't burn me as I'm using it... Any actual useful advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! (Also btw I know I know "Touch of Malice used to kill you!!1!", I played D1 at the time, I know how that was.)

  • It’s a good mop up gun, I did the catalyst using hand cannon then switching over to Tommy’s...unless you get the drop on someone and your at full health..the gun has some neat lore too.

  • Just hipfire that baby. Its very stable and accurate when hipfired with decent range for the archetype

  • The catalyst for that gun is pretty useless

  • Is it a 120 or Dead Man's? No? Then it's not going to be good.

  • Yeah it’s fine without the catalyst. Very strong even.

  • It is really the ONE Exotic I never touch. Won't play a gun where I am hurting myself with.

  • Personally I don't like Tommy's matchbook a lot. I just don't like how it feels. But it is unable in pvp. I've been killed with it plenty of times. It might take a while to get the catalyst done but it is doable.

    • I used it in PvP when it came out and it seemed pretty good. I haven't used it in a long time, but IIRC it didn't take that much to get the cat. So in today's PvP I don't know, maybe I'll have to fire it up and try it again :)

    • Shiekh put a YouTube video about it just a few days ago. It has in build great hoodie accuracy, even in the air! Its a weapon with a risk vs reward trait. Burning yourself only burns off your shields. Meaning it will never fully kill you, it will degrade your health bar till 25 %. Now with the current meta with 120s Its a calculated risk you’ll have to take in useing it. What I normally used it with was with was lion rampants and 10 recovery build. Just like warlocks you can swoop in from the air and hipfire with near perfect accuracy and guns blazing. Its actually great fun once you get the hang of it. Also when used with bubble and weapons of light.. oh baby, it shreds people apart fast. Key to it is to use it like last word. Only aim in when you ‘need’ too. For the rest hipfire and spray and pray all the way. 👍

    • I've seen some great pvp vids with it on warlocks and in healing rifts. The new warlock chest makes it even better from what I've seen the gun seems to be a laser

Tommy's isn't a bad gun in a vacuum. The problem is the meta. The game is handing out 120 hand cannons and Dead Man's Tales that can 2 tap you with the right perks. You need to finish your fights WAY before Tommy's exotic perk can make a game changing difference, because at that point, you'll just be dead. For someone who is just average, using a gun that causes self-damage is suicidal.
