I am asking once again for a Trace Rifle buff or rework (or something). (Please read I wasted two hours making this lol)

I know it's probably too late to ask for one of these with Beyond Light around the corner, but I'm gonna ask for it anyway. This time, I've done a bit of research. Personally, I believe that Trace Rifles need a buff because they're kind of weak in PvP, which sucks for me. After all, I'm a huge fan of lasers. They're kind of strong in PvE, especially Prometheus Lens with its add-clearing Bubble of Doom™ and Divinity with its critical-hit Bubble of Doom™, both of which outshine Coldheart and Wavesplitter and maybe Ruinous Effigy. Even then, I think it'd be nice to give them some PvE buffs so they can be at least viable for raids if people don't have optimal DPS weapons, but hey, that's just me. In PvP, however, they are pretty weak. Instead of trying to list my own reasons, I'm going to quote Pattycakes (who is by far a better PvP player than I am) in his video "Exotic Weapon PvP Tier List Rankings | Special Weapons (Destiny 2)," since that video explains their issue better than I ever could.
The main issue that I have with these trace rifles, in general, is that they require special ammo, but only have an optimal time to kill that's pretty similar to primary ammo auto rifles. And to add to that problem, the ammo economy of special ammo on these really hurts. You'll often just barely get enough for another kill when you do pick up a special brick. Aside from being fun to use, I don't really see a big reason to use this in PvP.
Now, as someone commented on my last post on this topic, asking for a PvP trace rifle buff would be asking for trouble. I can see how a huge buff would cause mayhem, but perhaps a slightly improved TTK or ammo economy will be enough to make them viable, but not overpowered. I'd also imagine someone bringing up the point that trace rifles are PvE weapons, and I can definitely see that with Prometheus Lens, Divinity, and Ruinious Effigy, but certainly not Coldheart and Wavesplitter, especially since they have at least a 3.5/5 PvP rating on light.gg. Another thing I wish to address is a trace rifle that deals Stasis damage. Now, Coldheart's damage is always going to be Arc, or else it would contradict its lore. Divinity would make a lot more sense since this weapon is Vex and Vex are from the Darkness or something, I don't pay too much attention to the lore, but there's still the Judgement Bubble of Doom™, which I feel like Arc suits it more than Stasis and ice. I'm not going to ask for more exotic trace rifles since we already got one in the Season of Arrivals. I also kind of want to address the trace rifle catalysts. While the Coldheart and Prometheus catalysts do give it some nice stat boosts, maybe they can get more unique buffs, like Coldheart can completely stopping enemies after holding fire on it long enough - which rewards good accuracy - and Prometheus can have a faster-expanding bubble or cause enemies to explode, incinerating enemies around them, increasing ad-shredding potential. Will these be game-breaking? Probably. Is this a good idea? Probably not, but I think it's cool, and strike catalysts have such a low drop rate, so having powerful catalysts would maybe make the grind more worth it. Also, I think Wavesplitter and Divinity could use catalysts as well, so even if they don't get buffed, they could still have a better chance than before or something. Perhaps for a Wavesplitter catalyst, its Supercharged Battery trait can become stackable and deal more damage with each Orb of Light collected within a certain period of time, pairing well with the fact that exotic catalysts allow weapons to drop Orbs on multikills. Then, for the Divinity catalyst, Penance (shoot enough and then burst of damage) can become an AoE explosion, making it useful for ad clear and not just DPS. My last and probably weakest point is the need for legendary trace rifles. They'd probably be just like their exotic counterparts, but now with random rolls. It may sound dumb to some, but I think that it would be fun to have a special ammo-powered laser without taking up an exotic slot, which could probably open some fun or powerful loadouts. The problem with creating new trace rifles and new weapons, in general, is having to model them and all that coding stuff, so I can understand why Bungie wouldn't do this. Anyway, that concludes my excessively-long essay on why I think trace rifles need something fixed with them. Will people agree with me? Probably not. Will a Bungie employee look at this and consider it? I think the chances are slim, but this essay was still a fun waste of time and allows discussion. If anyone wants to add to this with their own suggestions or yell at me for being a stupid idiot, be my guest. Edit: Wow, this post got better comments than I thought. Also, someone asked for a TL;DR, so here it be. TL;DR: Bungo please kinda fix trace rifles in PvP and kinda rework their catalysts and maybe add legendary trace rifles

  • Clearly, you didn't play during the laser tag meta. It's the reason I missed two seasons.

  • My main issue with Trace Rifles is that they seem to have no aim assist, or at least feel like they don't. I understand that they're "lasers", but when I'm having to keep a laser pointer dot on someone's face the whole time in PvP while it's constantly trying to pull upwards at a rate beyond that of an auto-rifle where being even a smidge off means I get non-crit damage when an auto would still be landing crits? Yeah... it's not going to work well. They're just unwieldy, especially for controller players, with it being so difficult to reign in their overwhelming desire to hit the ceiling and very small critical registration zones. With how fast they chew through ammo, and how little of it you get in the first place, they really should make them a bit easier to handle. A special weapon that offers no advantages over a primary autorifle just makes it a bad choice overall.

  • I don't think every kind of weapon necessarily has to be good in pvp.

  • Also, people say that autos with high stability are, and I quote, laser beams. Upgrade trace stability, it’s literally a laser beam!!

  • I don’t think they need a buff or rework. The only thing I want with trace rifles are things that make them really unique. Ideas: 1) stasis trace rifle 2) primary ammo trace rifle 3) heavy ammo trace rifle 4) kinetic trace rifle that shoots kinetic liquid ammo like Cold Denial or False Promises 5) a kinetic trace rifle that just fires a straight up beam of SIVA nanites 6) Hakke kinetic trace rifle 7) kinetic taken trace rifle 8) a trace rifle like hard light that lets you swap elements 9) a trace rifle that fires 2 beams at once Stuff like that.

heres an idea for a legendary trace rifle, a laser pointer that does very little damage but has infinite range and no damage fall of, it's literally just a laser pointer. EDIT: another idea to add to this, permanently blinds enemies on frontal headshots.

        • Wavesplitter absolutely doesn’t need any sort of a buff in PvP - as long as you’re landing crits it absolutely melts people. The others not so much but they’re all PvE focussed. My issue is: Coldhearts exotic perk is that it’s a Trace Rifle which is ridiculous now because it’s a weapon type. I get it was completely unique way back when but they need to give it a second perk like all the other TRs get!

            • I’d suffice for just trace-rifle specific mods, since mods like increased auto-rifle reserves or even a generic rifle reserve mod seldom if ever seems to work in conjunction with a trace.

              • Except for Divinity, all trace rifles have an optimal TTK of 0.8 (Prometheus Lens) or 0.73 (all the rest). Even with all body shots, the TTK is under one second. Damage isn't the problem in PVP, it's forgiveness (optimal TTKs require 10 crit shots, 1 body) and ease of use (it's not exactly easy to hit 10 crits on a moving target with a trace rifle). Either ammo economy changes (more ammo per brick, perhaps) or changing the damage numbers to require fewer crits would be enough to make the weapons more viable. Simply increasing the damage would probably create a whole lot of new problems, balance-wise. As for Coldheart, it doesn't get enough love. It has the highest average DPS, the highest sustained DPS, the highest burst DPS, and the highest total damage output of any trace rifle. It's plenty strong as it is, it's just outshined by our newer, shinier toys. Honestly, all Wavesplitter needs is the ability to create orbs. Whatever the catalyst does, even if it only makes the beam look the ones in the OG Ghostbusters movie, would be a vast improvement, since we would be able to more consistently activate it's exotic perk. When the perk is activated, it's second only to Coldheart in all DPS numbers.

                • They could use an ammo buff per brick or dedicated ammo finder/ scavenger mods. Any damage buff is out of the question considering CoO lazer tag week. How they are right now is great imo. They aren't competing with OHK specials but if you hit your crits then the ttk will beat most primaries in 1v1.

                • They seriously need more precision damage (for both PvE and PVP) along with a bit more ammo per brick, and more base ammo on spawn/respawn (for PvP).

                  • Divinity should stay special. Definitely. Maybe effigy too. The rest should go to primary, they’re gimmicky autos basically and not really worth the exotic slot.

                  • The only one that really needs a rework is coldheart. Because other laser rifles exist. Simce the main perk is just "its a laser rifle", every other laser rifle is "coldheart but better". It was good for its time, but its just sad at this point.

For the most part, Trace Rifles do what they're supposed to. They just need minor improvements at best. In PvP, they could use a little more ammo per brick to bump up their usage, but that's about it. Divinity needs no fixes. It's already viable in grandmasters. Wavesplitter will be far better when it gets a catalyst for orb generation. Prometheus/Coldheart could use a rework. Devoting your exotic + special for pure crowd control is often a bad deal and Coldheart has been effectively powercreeped in the raw DPS department by other exotics. Effigy debuffs majors and serves as a wicked crowd control tool. It does so much in horde encounters already. I don't see it getting any buffs.
