I spent most of the phase except right at the end ahead of the boss since I was focusing on killing the snipers. When the set of snipers I was dealing with were dead and I was getting a couple of pot shots off on the boss, I'd sometimes deliberately stand out in the open to bait it out and safely move behind cover on a different platform. I think the best thing to do is to learn a route and rhythm that works for you and stick to it.
