Trials isn’t Fun for the Majority of Players

With out the majority of players participating, the mode will wither and die. Forbes even wrote about it and articulates the situation very well. https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2020/03/29/destiny-2s-trials-of-osiris-is-starting-to-make-me-angry/#1bbcd28f4403 I welcome discussion, but will ignore the knuckle dragging “get good” response. Thanks devs for your hard work!

The Crucible population just keeps getting smaller and more toxic by the day. It's not sustainable. It will be funny to watch it implode though.

    • My two cents as a player with a low KD who got wins in trials. I am a average or slightly above average PvP player I guess. Not good at the game really, never have been good at FPS. But I put many hours in Destiny 2, and I can top the scoreboard frequently now in my skill bracket. I don't have a high KD, I think my life time KD is like 1.08 and lifetime efficiency is 1.47ish and so far, my best mode this season is for clash. Clash seasonal true KD is 1.33, and Efficiency is 1.79 out of 62 wins with a 55% win rate so far according to destiny tracker. I played with some friends in Trials, who have 1.2-1.3 life time KDs and 1.6-1.7 life time efficiency. I'd consider them above average players. They top the scoreboard consistently when we play IB or quick play together. When we 1 v 1 we both encounter an even fight. Come within 2-3 kills of each other in a 1 v 1 and the winner can go either way in a fight. Playing with guys at my level is the point I'm making. We got 7 wins and 1 loss on our card in trials last night with guys all around my skill level playing together using discord to chat. We were all close to 1000 base light. When we tried the previous weeks, not at 1000 base light, we only got to 3 wins with a struggle. And Saturday night, we got to 5 wins with a loss or two, I forget. We might be able to go flawless as a team if we learn to play together as a team better, and get a little lucky with match making. It sucks getting put against guys with 41 flawless tickets, which happened a few times. We lost, then reset our ticket promptly. But guys like me with low KDs can get trials loot, and participate in the game and not just get carried if you play together with your team and try hard I think. The big issue to me is, the beaver errors people are getting. That ruins games more than losing because another team is better than you. Me and my friend struggled until we partnered with a guy we clicked with well. Some players you just won't click with, others you do. You have to practice a lot together as a team, or find a new team you click with naturally. When we got with the guy we clicked with, we were getting wins much more frequently. And his KD is around ours too. We weren't getting carried by some 2.0 true KD savant. I think the problem is, people don't want to put the time into working as a team and getting good as a team. Not all of us are naturally gifted at FPS, so it's going to take work to get good. Some guys just have a knack for it, can pick it up and do well just playing. I think trials is mostly fine, bungie just needs dedicated servers to avoid the people getting dropped mid game.

      • Trials has been infested with hackers and cheaters. This game mode will die and is currently losing all of its casual player. Back when this game was on blizzard the cheaters were not so frequent, but with the light cap only being at 960 and the game being free to play it has encouraged more cheaters and people paying cheaters to carry them to the lighthouse. Plus the gear gained from playing this mode isnt really worth the grind. There is absolutley zero reason to play. The story line has also gone down hill with nothing more but bunkers and cliffhangers. This game used to be fun and now its all sweatys and cheaters playing trials and killing this community. Bungie needs to impliment a better anti-cheat system and impliment IP/ harddrive ban from cheaters, or make this game a pay to play like it used to be.

        • Once again another mode for the hardcore and once again Bungie are going to have to act on it. This game is heavily populated by casual/hobbiests. It's noted in Bungie history that if they don't make something accessible to those players then it will either fail or have to change.

Yep it sucks. It's carried teams vs Carried teams...otherwise it the rest of the community getting 1-2 wins against a paid for team. After waiting so long how was this not a priority. It's a total screw up. A weekly trials tournament for all players would be fun that was outside of normal trials. Where people get eliminated out of the tournament and the winners keep moving up. Like WSOP.

If they had of made trials like the obelisks. Have saint 14 have upgrades. 100 tokens for a weapon frame to start (upgrades bring them to 20 eventually) tokens don't disappear weekly, so players can build up to achieve a weapon. Going flawless grants you 7 upgrade tokens. Losses give 2 token Wins give 5. 7 extra tokens for flawless. Tokens are used like warmind bits 3 tiers to upgrade. -100 Tokens for a choice weapon frame. 20 once fully upgraded. -70 for a random weapon. 10 once fully upgraded. -higher stat armour drops as tiers upgrade. -fully upgraded you can now buy tokens that act as boons for the stats you want. -glass needles to re roll unwanted exotic stats. -fully upgraded players that don't go flawless have a small chance of obtaining an armour piece. Chance increases slightly the more tokens they donate.

          • Only a small percentage of players played trials in d1. For them to think more would play in d2 is very out of touch. Then again, them releasing trials again in this state shows just how out of touch they really are. Hell they cannot even interact with the players

I've been analyzing stats on my losses, and its pretty obvious why I'm losing certain games. Quick background I have 25k kills and unbroken and around 1.1 kd. Every loss I take in trials is against teams that have 3x my amount of kills or more, or are low kills but obviously on a second account because they have stats way to good for someone with that little gameplay. And there is always bare minimum 1 player that is rated top 2% or better. I've only managed to get 2 flawless and like 8 losses at game 7. The conclusion to all of this is if you want to be a powerhouse at trials you need 75k kills worth of experience. And the ratio of games you play on a 7 win card that are against teams of top 3% players is incredibly high. The best thing you can do is play at peak times and hope for luck with matchmaking, or put in a massive amount of time in crucible.

              • It was pretty obvious the mode was going to fail when we knew what kind of rewards there were and what kind of system it uses, the only explanation why it was released in such a state after all that time in development is that Bungie probably massively over estimated how big the population would be, and thought that a bigger percentage of the people playing it would have access to the loot via this system. I'll give it a few more weeks before the population is less than half of what it was on launch weekend, the game overall is better than during vanilla so the numbers might not get as low as they did with Trials of the Nine, but i don't see it doing well either. The shotgun with a decent roll was all i wanted out of it anyways, now that i have it i cant be bothered to play anymore just for the sake of trying to get more flawless runs. Its sweaty, lacks in loot incentive, and its laggy just like all of Destiny pvp but losing because of it matters more.

              • Where are all the mid tier players in trials. Every game I play is either.0.4 kd bottom 20% players or full teams of all diamond top 3% players. Has the middle 77% walked away.

              • IMHO bungie ignored that they were shedding players every week so the population was not big enough to sustain a healthy PVP environment. it couldn't hold onto any new light players they had attracted in the first place so it just ended up being a sweaty failure.

              • It's really cute . As a PVP player trials can be toxic at times , but you are acting as though endgame pve ( raids ) aren't toxic . Just go through a majority of lfg posts and see what the posts say . "KWTD" that's equally entailing that it's expected you know how to do something, otherwise u are kicked 95% of time . I'd venture to say there are more people who haven't done a raid than participated in trials.

Trials is sbmm only. Nothing else comes into play when matchmaking and don’t be fooled. That fact that I come across the same players in comp or quick play playlists just proves the game tries to find players in a limited pool for you to play against. Is the connection good? I’d say it’s 50/50. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In a “pinnacle activity” this isn’t good enough. As for wins on a card, false. Many times I’ve played people already on a seven win card while I’m on 3 or 4 and vice versa. Over the three weekends it’s been out I’ve already played some of the same players every single week. Surely it can’t be legit. Unless player numbers are shockingly low.

                • It really highlights weapon imbalance. Snipers are ridiculous. Not realistic at all. They need to be more sniper and less scout rifle. Movement speed, weapon swap, aim down sight speed etc should be seriously altered. Try standing straight up holding a .50 cal rifle and hit anything accurately, while taking fire no less. Obviously this is a game that has super jumping boots, “supers” and grenades that appear out of osmosis but maybe that’s why I’ve always hated sniping in Destiny. At least holding and firing a shotgun is pretty accurate. (I’d love to see a double barrel relic of the golden age eh?) Maybe aiming down sights with Snipers only being usable while crouching? Maybe give them radar bonuses while aiming down sights as a balance? Just some ideas.

Trials isn't for the majority of players - this is by design and is okay. ~signed a PvE main. that said - card resetting for tokens and farming n00bs is excessive and unnecessary.

                  • Trials philosophy at heart was to have a sweaty pinnacle activity to appeal to the top 10% of the pvp. So an activity designed for 10% of the population will eventually be played only by 10% of the population. The obvious answer if you want to make it more accessible is a form of SBMM, but then you're going against the initial philosophy becoz the top 10% hate SBMM. So it was destined to fail sooner or later. But is it really a failure or are we just misunderstanding the objective of the playlist ? Grandmaster ordeal is in the same category, a sweaty pinnacle activity for the top 10% of the pve. So you can't put a "reasonnable" light level coz it will piss them off if too many finish it without needing crazy skills. People always assume that every activity are for everyone or almost. But maybe they're not. At least it makes way more sense if it was Bungie original idea to have the extreme parts of their population in their own things even if the 80% in the middle stay away from those. I'm actually surprise that the trials weapons are not in grandmaster ordeal, with different skins. That would wrap up the whole thing. Obviously the big issue is that the top 10% PVE can have fun by themselves in grandmaster. But the top 10% PVP can't do the same in trials, they need some of the 90% in it too to have fun.
