A journey without a destination is an agonizing deathmarch

Engagement: Everything is about how much you can stretch out a goal, not how you can engage the player. It's painfully obvious too. I'll identify a couple pain points and then point toward something that I think should be considered to at least give meaning to the endless grind. I work in digital content creation, I get it, time and resources (especially without Activision) are at a premium. But the lack of vision (or flimsy mutating vision) has meant Bungie appears to be flailing around taking this and that idea from users and sprinkling them into something that already lacks a solid framework. That's led to a massive shift in playability, fractured play, and overwrought complexity that doesn't enhance the game. It's complexity for complexity's sake. For solo, casual and beginning players, doing the same things day after day for a trickle of reward and little to no hope of reaching any end goal (max light, titles, etc) means why try? You're just going to start over next season with more of the same. Moving the goalposts over and over again is maddening! It's time to step back and look at your third act, it's the hardest to do, and it's a mess. Rather than make the gameplay complex by adding yet another barrier to progress, make the story complex, the rest just might come along for the ride. Example: You've added even more requirements to upgrade armor. Why? Meaning, what exactly is the story motivation for this? Is a resource scarce? Did the Vanguard find better sources of energy? Can you find some way to make me appreciate the change? Can you work this into the story? Doing this feels punitive as do all other illogical and unmotivated changes to the gameplay. "Why do they require this new thing on top of the old ones?" "Because they want you to grind even more for literally NO REASON other than the grind." RNG (glad you're moving away from this...sorta, take old RNG quests and make the solvable without dumb luck) I know several players that took 67, 88, and 108 (?!!) tries to get the One Thousand Voices from the Last Wish Raid. One got it mercifully after 32 tries. I tried 12 times and decided I no longer cared to have the weapon. When they were done, they were not satisfied. They did not feel accomplished. They weren't even all that happy. They felt relieved they could stop. I don't know about you but I have a job, not a position. I'd lurv to see your telemetry on gameplay. Maybe if that was obvious I'd understand the decisions? I think you know this, you apparently increased the drop rate. Stop it. Make it achievable like Divinity or for God's sake, give things like this and Izanagi to Xur. Enough time wasted is enough time wasted. In your minds does playing more automatically mean players are more engaged or does it just mean players are just...playing more mindlessly? Non-solo or casual players may be goaded into playing by teammates but even now I'm seeing some clans evaporate over apathy. I don't know about you, but leaving something happy because it's over isn't what you want your audience to feel. The idea I may rarely pick up the game again doesn't fill me sadness or fomo, it fills me with relief. I have no "reason" to collect, play, retry, for anything other than spinning some wheels on the road to oblivion. Some competing games that have been released have fizzled, but you can bet the more inaccessible and meaningless you make Destiny to play the more likely the bar to flee to something else will be lowered. I want you to succeed, I want to see the story play out. But I'm satisfied to wait for YouTube to tell me what happened. When making a change, it needs to have a purpose. Pixar asks, "What if?" Futurama asks, "Why if?" "Why" indeed.

  • It's not even 2 full weeks in yet and I'm already tired of the season. Most games make you build up for an epic and rewarding final encounter, and there's a resolution. Even if only brief, a story line gets revealed and resolved. Where's the Stranger (the other Bray)? Why did Uldren get revived if he's just going to be an immortal hobo? Great, we went in a Pyramid ship but so what? Is the Traveler ever going to actually put itself back together? These seasonal story lines just feel like Mcguffins. The weapons end up being no better than what we already have. There's some unknown push to make us never have one set of armor that can use all the mods. Nothing ever ends, it really is just a hamster wheel. This game really is becoming Fortnight Jr. No soul, just a season recurrence and new microtransactions.

    • I really miss the story drivin content that made this game great. This new endless pointless grind with no story WHATSOEVER!!!!! is disappointing and discouraging.

I think it’s pretty clear that the actual story/universe isn’t high on the priority list for Bungie. Which is a shame considering how great the universe is. It’s a shame to see it squandered on this terribly rigid and impractical gameplay model that feels less and less rewarding with each season. I wish they’d open the game and let it breathe. Lean on their open worlds and infuse it with variance instead of just throwing players into small teams to complete harder versions of things they’ve done so many times already while simultaneously making every pursuit take as long as it can.

      • Taken King and Forsaken, the two time the Destiny franchise has been driven by a cohesive narrative. Also the two best periods in the franchise.
In your minds does playing more automatically mean players are more engaged or does it just mean players are just...playing more mindlessly?
I mean, with a typical triple A game you wouldn't expect more than 30 hours of gameplay (games like skyrim and dark souls are exceptions). If the time is longer than that people would even complain that the game is stretched too long. This season I just realized how absurd it is that they stretched the same content (public events/lost sectors) over a season. I do want the new guns, but the price is too high.

        • There might have been an intention for some story. Recall "The Stranger." Here was something begging for a slow release. Appearances here and there, until she turned out to be "someone." The Awoken had their home. The Exo do not. The closet mention of the Exo in the storyline is Ada-1, and that was as vague as vague. Ada-1 "could" have been the stranger. I suspect the people who had a story line in mind when the Stranger appeared, have left Bungie, and left the not too dedicated behind. I wonder if the large effort put in to designing big activities like Raids, Protocol, the recent Towers, might have been better spent on smaller events that everyone can do.

            • Honestly, I'm already tired of this season. I've played Destiny for over a year now, but lately I feel like Bungie's recent iterations of aspiration (bounties, RNG drops that largely give garbage rolls on cool looking items, etc) is beginning to burn me out. It's tiring to see so many unnecessary nerfs to things that are fun but not gamebreaking, A prime example would be the sniper nerfs,. Bungie should realize just how influential the seasonal artifact is. The artifact encourages players to at least experiment with different weapons... thereby potentially shaking up the sandbox. The fact that they nerfed sniper rifles (aside from Izanagi's) not because they're too strong or over performing, but to force players to play the game according to their vision. I'm also frustrated that we don't have more ways to customize our weapons. I feel like I HAVE to grind out the perfect or unique seasonal rolls solely because of FOMO. On top of that, all these weapons end up in the vault because I can't recreate a weapon that I previously found and used in the world. *smh* And goodness, the story has very little purpose and remains disjointed. Why could they not extend the conflict with the darkness and nightmares in the recent two expansions? It's almost like the entire story of Shadowkeep is insignificant and has no bearing beyond the GoS raid, which is the least interesting raid lore wise.

                • Great m8..and you nailed 100%. Unfortunately this will be put aside by the ppl that is leading the game. I've been saying that bungie needs to do 2 things: 1) sell the rights of the franchise to another company that Wana work on it. 2)change by the ppl in the lead team to bring fresh blood and ideas to the game. How it stands now, is just stupid and they're slowly killing the franchise, not the game Imo. Which is worse tbh!!

                    • I constantly praise SquareEnix for their handling of FFXIV. Progression-wise, yeah, you'll be hunting new gear every couple of months, but if you found your look, the incredibly in-depth glamour system ensures you will always wear your favorite armor and wield your favorite weapon. As for narrative, they always - ALWAYS - keep the story connected as the game continues, with every content update furthering the story and, most importantly, staying on topic so-to-speak. Sure, there were side stories, but they tended to touch on the main story, which was never neglected.

The flaccid leadership, that blows around like a reed in the wind, values feedback far too much from crying babies. A strong leader with a vision and a spine would do so much good for this franchise.
