Bungie recently adressed the community concerns via a comment on this thread:
https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/255364570?sort=0&page=0
Cozmo says:
Sure, we'll respond. There isn't really any new info to give that Luke didn't already cover in the Director's Cut. We appreciate everyone's feedback on this and we'll make sure to share the community's thoughts with the team. We'll give you more details as we get closer to rolling out these changes.
That is it, and it is not enough.
We'll give you more details as we get closer to rolling out these changes.
This makes or breakes the game in my opinion, and decides if the game and its owner (Bungie) are "worthy" of my time and money.
I'm not buying a single Destiny 2 thing until those "details" are out in the open. You are "close enough" already as far as I'm concerned.
Am I supposed to just un-install and see what happens with this in 9-15 months?
EDIT:
After reading the answers to this post I found some common themes to questions and arguments that I figured I'd address.
0) My personal stance: I'm neither opposed nor do I support the proposed changes.
My entire point is that there is too little information about how "weapon retirement" is supposed to work.
This can make or break the game, I want to know how, and since this affects everything currently in the game that information should be readily available.
That information is, to me, crucial to have in regards to purchasing any of the upcomming season-passes until some of the smoke has cleared.
1) If you "support" or "oppose" this change, read this:
You have not been given enough information to actually have an informed stance on this whole ordeal. We've been presented with a vague idea of what Bungie means to do, and it's not enough information to make a meaningful argument as to whether this is a good idea or not.
These are some perfectly valid concerns, un-answered, that are consistently brought forward about all this. Until these are answered it's IMPOSSIBLE to have a valid opinion on any of this:
What weapons will be affected (Pinnacle/ritual, exotics, legendaries, blues), or is it all of them?
What are these "new" and "unique" weapons we'll get as replacements for our old weaponry?
I have a god-rolled Beloved. I hated grinding for it. There is no way in hell they are making me grind for a sniper rifle that looks like Beloved, acts like Beloved, feels like Beloved, but is called Misstress; where the only difference is that I can use Misstress in power enabled activites while my god-rolled Beloved can't be.
That's poor game-design. I'm all for new weapons when they bring something cool and unique to the table, but if it's a reskin the gun is ultimately pointless. That's artificially induced grind, and I do not support that (with my money).
While we can't assume they will be making a re-skinned gun with a different name for us to grind, we can't assume that's not EXACTLY what's going to happen either. Sadly, there are a significant amount of re-skinned weapons that aren't exactly refuting that.
What about drop-rate of god-rolls (or even good weapons)?
Since this game has a lot of RNG, that means a lot of weapons won't be used because the drops have been of garbage guns. Some people have bad RNG, and with weapon retirement that means you might get a good drop of a weapon, only to have it retired the next week. Is the rate at which god-rolls / good rolls drop going to be addressed? We don't know.
2) What's the actual problem here?
If we disregard the discussion about whether power-creep is a thing in Destiny 2 or not for now, this boils down to an interesting line of questions.
In the TWAB Luke presents the problem, paraphrased, like this:
"We make new guns, but people don't use them because they don't have to".
First of all, I don't think that's true. Secondly, I don't see how that's a BAD thing. I can only speak for myself, but I LIKE trying out new guns.
The problem here is the difference between rolls, or rather rarity of certain rolls. I don't use "new" guns because the drop-rate of GOOD rolls, not to mention god-rolls, is ABYSMALL.
Last week I got my FIRST viable "Hard Truths" - SMG (drops in Crucible) out of hundreds of drops. It's been out since season 4 (that's when Forsaken dropped!!). I enjoy using that SMG, to me it's NEW and FRESH, and it's been in the loot-pool FOREVER. I just NEVER got a good one before.
The way I see it, it's not like people don't use "new" guns, it's that viable "new" guns just won't drop.
The second thing to address here are the re-skins: I have a good roll of Widows Bite (Sniper). Why would I want to go out of my way to hunt for an Apostate (Thorny Widows Bite) when I know (with statistical certainity) I'm not going to get a good roll, let alone a god-roll. The Apostate I've tried is subpar to the Widows Bite I have. I have been given no reason to think it adds anything new to the table.
This thought process goes for ALL THE RE-SKINS! That's a lot of "new" weapons that aren't really new (seriously, the Apostate looks GREAT, but I'm not going to grind Altar of Sorrows for one.)
This boils down to the actual issue with the loot that I have:
Once I got my god-rolled Beloved that I wanted from the Menagerie, I NEVER wanted to touch the Menagerie again. Menagerie was mindless and boring to me. How many people stopped playing Reckoning once they got their Spare Rations?
Why is that an "OKAY" mentality to have around the things you do in Destiny?
Make FUN and ENGAGING activities, the loot should be icing on the cake, not the reason you are doing the activity. If I enjoyed Altar of Sorrow, maybe I'd get an god-rolled Apostate to use anyway. Don't hold me hostage with the loot-drops. If your statistics show you people won't use new weapons, maybe there is more to it than "they don't have to". (also, Breakneck, Luke? When was the last time you talked to people playing Destiny 2)
Let me re-iterate:
The way I see it, it's not like people don't use "new" guns, it's that viable "new" guns just won't drop.
I don't see how arbitrarily retireing the old guns, that finally has dropped as viable rolls solves that problem. Again: Too little information to make a meaningful argument about this whole "weapon retirement" thing.
3) I'm not personally attacking Cozmo with this post. I'm asking Bungie for better transparancy and about information they SHOULD have already. Cozmo's comment just happened to be the CLOSEST thing to a statement from Bungie on this whole ordeal, and I called BUNGIE out on it. Not Cozmo; neither the professional entity nor the person.
Seriously: Why announce weapon retirement at all if you don't have more than a vague idea about it ...?
Unless Bungie is just toying with the idea, and in that case... it should have been presented way differently.
Again: Questions without answers.

Why announce weapon retirement at all if you don't have more than a vague idea about it ...?
We like to try to be transparent even when we can't share all of the details yet. Yes, we could have waited until further down the road to talk about this, but it's a topic that Luke wanted to address in this Director's Cut.

Design space is the way a weapon can interact with the environment, the kick, feel, sound. It's separate from power. A good example of a new design space was Anarchy. Another good example of a new design space is Lead From Gold or Demolitionist, interacting with novel other parts of the game. Retiring weapons won't create any design space. That's not how that works at all. The hard work of creating new weapons that feel and look different? Absolutely unaffected by weapon retirement. That he thinks it does makes me think that he is plotting a wrong direction for this game.

89 RepliesGuys. (and Gals.) They are going to phase out older weapons. This is going to happen. They're being very open about why it's going to happen. Their reasoning, even if you adamantly disagree with it, is logical. You can't out-debate this. You can't beg. You can't threaten. You can't use alternate-rationale. You can't throw the "time investment" argument around. (all MMO's are time-sinks for loot that is eventually phased out, by nature of the beast.) If this is game-breaking for you, that's your choice, respectfully. It will, in fact, not break Destiny 2. The mass exodus of angry gamers will not happen. Most of you, threatening to leave, will not leave. For like 90% of you, these are just empty threats by people who are afraid of change. (And hey, I get it. Change is scary sometimes.) A rotating, ever-changing meta that feels organic and feels like progression instead of loot-hoarding sounds like a blast to me. But if it's not for you, I get it. But honestly, I'm sure when it gets implemented, I'll see most of ya still here, complaining about the next change that comes down the pipe. Honored to share this tiny corner of the interweb with y'all.

1 ReplyLet's force then to listen don't buy the new season... If a huge chunk of us don't buy it they will notice

I don't get why bingie is trying to micro manage how everyone plays in the first place. So no one uses your guns and they want to use the same one for 10 years... Who -blam!-ing cares? I've never seen a game so anal about how their own players play the game. All this shit is about anti player choice... And it's sickening. Bungie needs to expand, rather than get taller. If thorn is an issue, make counter armor or weapons. It's really not so difficult... You don't have to retire anything or care about the endless tower of power creep. Just start focusing on power expansion instead. If you don't think there is enough player diversity with gear, it's literally YOUR fault bungie. It's called a design flaw. You make us pay for your design flaw. Literally and figuratively.
-
The problem, as usual is the accessibility of better options. You can put awesome models in the database weekly... but if people are not getting viable drops that are a better fit, then they will continue using what they already have. It is one of the key problems with random perks... having that stack on top of the crappy RNG for getting the item to drop. One way or the other, Bungie needs to make it easier for people to get their hands on the better alternatives... they can't switch up their builds if they are not getting their hands on the drops.
-
Its D1 groundhog day. We are going to blow up your vault so we can make you grind for all that armour and weapons all over again. It still urks me that people still get excited for old exotics returning. We shouldn't have lost them in the first place. Bungie have ran out of ideas. Simple as that. Time to grind GoS for another 3 months.
-
28 RepliesBungie was clear about what they planned to do and that was essentially to have old Legendary Weapons and old content expire. "LEGENDARY WEAPONS" So yes anything classed as Legendary (Purple Icon) will be phased out for the new loot. I HEAVILY disagree with this because Because I spent MY TIME getting these weapons and rolls that suit play style. We are MUCH too far into Destiny 2 to make these kind of decisions. The only thing we can confirm Bungie has accomplished with this is needlessly polarizing their entire playerbase over pure laziness and that disgusts me

Edited by DeathPony07: 3/8/2020 10:40:11 AMImagine if Gearbox told us that all our legendary weapons we're going to become useless after every DLC. Oh right, they wouldn't, because they're not completely brain dead. A looter shooter with expiring loot is literally the dumbest idea ever.
-
Bungie is "retiring" weapons so they can rerelease them months down the road. Why d1 was slowly integrated into d2. Hardlight, thorn, monte carlo. All from d1 posted as "new" exotics. It's what bungie is gonna do just resell the same shit and market it as "brand new gear" All the "new gear" we're getting in season 10 is what we lost from season 1/2. Luke Smith is a greedy S.O.B and can't make anything original, so they resort to reskin and rereleased old gear. Season 10 is going to suck so hard. In season 11 you'll get your season 4/5 gear back makes as "new gear"

This game is dead. It died when we killed Vosik and Aksis. It came back to life and died again when we killed Riven. I dont want to hear how many players are playing. The heart and soul of Destiny is dead. The allure of what's to come is dead. Reskinned, disposable content is dead on arrival. Anyone buying silver right now is doing so in vane. Destiny is now a pop song, in an ocean of Top 40. It has been said that, what is dead may never die....because it's already dead!

3 RepliesRemember when Bungie said hey play how YOU want.. Datto: Hold my beer.. they're going to play how I want..
-
Please don't tell me I don't have enough information to make an informed decision. Downvoted.
-
13 RepliesWont change unless the streamers are all tweeting them. Like the artifact. Lol, community thinks they listened to them. Nope.
-
2 RepliesApparently not enough streamers are complaining. Their feedback matters almost IMMEDIATELY. Insert major 'POWER LEVEL ENABLED ARTIFACT ENABLED IN TRIALS WE QUIT' oh we won't enable it Bungie we LOVE YOU. Pheh. Streamers.
-
1 ReplyPlain and simple they are doing it because if they make all your older weapons useless you will be forced to grind out for new ones essentially padding playtime.
-
19 RepliesI have absolutely nothing against Cozmo and Dmg, but I don’t think they are the gleaming example of good community management. It’s better than it has been in the past, but we are still in the dark about so many reasons behind why they do what they do. Warframe and the Division have phenomenal community managers and are always transparent about what’s going on with the game. Destiny should really be looking at what they are doing.
-
So you want hem to simply overturn their initial decision because you're all crying over crutches you don't wanna let go of? Ohh kiddo...that's not how this works..
-
Playing destiny or even supporting bungie ant this point is about the same as being in a abusive relationship. They say they won’t hit you again but they do and most people just take it and even thank them for it
-
6 RepliesYou’re wasting your breath, the community has virtually zero input into the direction of this game. The response from Cosmo was him just being polite, he’s not going to “pass it along” because he knows this is already set in stone, they don’t need to give all the information because our opinion is irrelevant anyway. This has been bungie right from day 1 of this franchise.
-
4 RepliesI'm a one issue buyer. If this isn't reversed, I won't be buying anything from Bungie. I won't be bothering to play Destiny. If you want my money, fix it now.
-
3 RepliesCozmo stated that plans are not set in motion... but this TWAB seems to contradict his statement when the dev team wrote the following: "...as well as prepare underlying systems for future updates like the forthcoming one for Legendary weapons mentioned by Luke Smith in the Director’s Cut ‘Weapons Forever’ section."
-
You make it sound like the community has any say at all. They don't. Bungie will do what they want and will still find ways to put more effort into monestising loot and trying to milk players out of every penny they can. The sooner everyone realises Bungie actualy don't give a crap and just want more money for less effort, the better.
