Hi, there. As I'm sure many of you have already realized and some of you might soon realize, Armor 2.0 isn't all it's cracked up to be. Either through massive blunder and mis-execution, ignorance of players' outcry for a nerf to the cost of a Masterwork, or as an act to deliberately infuriate players, Bungie has once again taken a very simple problem with a very simple solution and somehow made it much, much worse. Without really talking about what else makes Armor 2.0 a disaster (like arbitrarily attaching elements to mods for no real reason than to artificially inflate gameplay time or changing the amount of dice you have to roll to get a piece of armor you want from two (perk slots) to six (attribute rolls), I want to go over the most glaring issue. The one the community has been begging to be fixed since before I started playing again in Forsaken after my post-Vanilla hiatus.
In it's old state, Masterworking a single armor piece costed a significant amount of enhancement cores, a relatively rare resource. Enough, in fact, that I never bothered to Masterwork a single armor piece because I could not justify the time spent versus the reward. After listening attentively to it's community, Bungie changed that system by adding two new resources with which to upgrade armor, one of which costs some of the other and the other of which costs enhancement cores. The problem arises in how the cost of the two interact.
The resource you need to finalize a masterwork costs ten of the resource before it. And that doesn't sound too terribly bad at first, until you realize what it costs to buy the first resource. Each one costs 10 enhancement cores, 25 Planetary Materials, and 10,000 (yes, that's ten thousand) Glimmer. If you need ten of these to get the last piece you need, you'll end up paying 250 Planetary Mats, 100 Enhancement Cores, and 100,000 (one hundred thousand) Glimmer. And that might not sound too bad. But you need two of those final resources, meaning that instead of 10 of the one before, you'll need twenty. This will cost you 500 Planetary Materials, 200 Enhancement Cores and 200,000 Glimmer.
This is what the last two of ten steps in Masterworking a single piece of armor is. If you wanted to masterwork a whole set (helm, arms, chest, legs, class), it would cost you 2,500 Planetary Materials, 1,000 Enhancement Cores and 1,000,000 Glimmer. And that's just for those last two resources you need. That doesn't count the fact that you have to use the resources you need ten apiece of on your armor just to get to the step where you have to spend ten of them for the other resource. Oh, and there's an inventory cap on both of these resources, both I believe are below 30. So don't get your hopes up on stockpiling.
Just to sort of let you guys know what you're in for if you haven't started yet.
Edit: I know you shouldn't expect to Masterwork an armor set in the first week. I know the mats drop from other activities. This post is about the fact that the community begged Bungie to tone down Masterworking cost and they responded by increasing it exponentially and complicating it.

Edited by Tziiware: 10/3/2019 3:30:56 PMCost of materials during years, just to be brought back at level 1 in shadowkeep launch by making everything and everybody 750, priceless.

A great post. Bump for awareness.

1 ReplyArmor 2.0 is a joke. A way to try and keep people grinding. I love destiny, but not at the cost of not being able to play other games because I have to constantly be grinding to get where I want to be
-
Good post. Agree. After starting the process of obtaining the Solstice armor this summer I totally burned out. I didn't want to do one more patrol, public event, or planetary farming cheese and got so tire of the whole process that I just hung it up. I HATE the nested activities: do twenty of these to get two of those to get one of this to minimally upgrade that. I used to like the grind. At this point, this approach to "gaming" has fully earned that descriptor. When it's not fun anymore it truly is a grind. And that's no knock on the game; it's just a reflection of where I am after 5 years of playing Destiny. As a result, I haven't purchased Shadowkeep. I'm waiting for comments here and so far, if this comment is what's really happening, my run with this fantastic game will be over.

I seriously do not like the new masterwork system. I think the idea of leveling up your armor and being able to add mods to it based on how many points are available on that armor piece is novel but the cost to masterwork is insane! I hear people complaining about the infusion system which could be worse. Arguably I prefer this instead of saving up infusion cores, but the new masterwork system needs a serious nerf. Reduce the cost!

Welp I'm happy my set doesn't need to be above 6 MW to be pretty decent. So i wont need those other materials. Since it will be months at the terrible rate leveling from 900-950 is for me to just get to 920 content I'm at least happy some of the things I like to do are easily doable around 900. If only 920 NF was as easily done as the final mission of Deathbringer. It's a whole new scale of bs.

Masterwork cores are rare. That is, unless you play any amount of the game whatsoever or do any of the banshee bounties, which provide them. It does not take long to amass extreme amounts of them along with other necessary materials.
-
The enhancement prisms and ascendant shards also drop from pinnacle activities. Buying them from banshee isn't the only way to get them.
-
Well, I think we need to wait and see still. My guess is that, similar to D1, that last material, Ascendant Shards, is going to drop from the raid. This will actually create a good reason to do the raid, but it also creates, IMO, a good compromise. Players who are unable to raid or choose not to, can still max out their armor sets, but will have to grind substantially more. Players who complete the "pinnacle" activity actually receive a very valuable award regularly in the form of those shards. It may also be a potential reward from the top tier nightfall. Of course, my whole thing hinges on these actually being awarded from those activities.

Not only is your math wrong, but it’s flawed.
-
I don't masterwork either. Big waste of time. If things drop already MW'd, I'm okay with that. I'm not spending the time to get all of those things. Good luck to those that do!

3 RepliesI give it a week before a streamer has a full set of masterwork armor and says “it’s a great system”

Edited by Guardian Dave: 10/3/2019 11:58:07 AMwell it will finally make armor that drops masterworked FAR more valuable and worth infusing. i had 3 pieces on my hunter masterworked and a bunch of black armory weapons. i dismantled most of the weapons and all the armor because i needed the cores and couldnt get upgrade things without cores to spend. and the armor was not 2.0 of course. the weapons i could have kept and wanted to, and should have because i still ended up just swapping to blue armors except my exotic arms. so all those cores wound up invested into the exotic arms and just ace of spades, the machine gun hammerhead, and ringing nail. im a little annoyed but i knew the armour was going because of 2.0 and its my own mistake i didnt know weapons HADNT changed, just there are mod additions for them. im also annoyed spider has half the bounties - means a lot more grinding patrols on tangled shore to get dead ghosts to get the wanted bounties. i gave up on those before shadowkeep that didnt drrop cores. and i gave up now on the bounties that cost 4 ghosts but give cores, because dead ghosts are harder to find, and to be frank, tangled shore isnt THAT interesting i want to spend hours there doing patrols just to get dead ghosts. i definitely wont for wanted bounties that dont drop cores. and since you dont even have spider local bounties to distract you after the 4 are done, it becomes a chore to just grind patrols and hope you get enough ghosts for another 4 wanted bounties because they cost more than those that only cost 3. i would increase drop rate and/or dead ghost number per drop on tangled shore for a start, then all 8 bounties that drop cores MIGHT be less painful and more like fun to do a little grind to get. the 8 without core rewards... well the only way now i would do them is to make them drop cores.

Sorry I didn't read your post but much before Shadowkeep launched, I had already decided that I'm going to use my original armor set anyway. I've been using some of the year 1 guns as well because they had better base stats. The Frigid Jackal is still one of the best snipers in the game for PvP. There are many others like that.

5 RepliesWelcome to free to play. Where all good games go to die. I bought this shit again, luckily not the annual pass as they have proven to be complete shite in the past. I will enjoy the nostalgia trip to old EDZ zones/Moon ( literally paying again for D1 vanilla ) but I can already see the grind involved in the future. Not the good kind where you get some good rewards for spending time in the game, no it's more like "Collect this item 500x" to get something you already had in the previous iteration of the game.

2 RepliesArmor 2.0 wasn't necessary.

1 ReplyEdited by amandajc808: 10/2/2019 11:25:41 PMThis is depressing news. You have to ask yourself if Bungie even thought of the knock on effects of their gameplay in this regard has on the players and the environment. The amount of people on my friends list and clan that were leaving the PS4 on with rubber bands on their controlers 24/7 to grind for materials in the forges for the last couple of months is ridiculous!, PS4's permanently on 24/7 burning electricity. They need to create an infusion system that is similar pre D2, this is just nuts.

1 ReplyIt just feels we are earning backs our powers again, over and over again.
-
Hey uh, here's a thought. Diminishing returns. Each tier on a masterwork really matters less as you go along. You're not getting some insane buff, it's not necessary for gameplay; therefore it's been made part of the endgame. Masterworking armour is a sign of accomplishment, probably from farming the highest tier nightfall.

2 RepliesTo everyone saying this isn't a nuisance, and la di da about "casual players" complaining ... Dude, I sink about three to four hours DAILY into this game, eight to twelve on days off if I'm feeling frisky, and I've already started to notice the lopsided reward system. They took an alright, albeit grindy mechanic, to get to your level, but with time and dedication of a couple weeks, you could easily become a force to be reckoned with. Now, however, you have to literally buy everything you need. This cost is going to pile up very, very quickly. As the OP originally, and accurately stated, the cost of Masterworks and such is ridiculous. Destiny with this new launch, has officially become a Pay for Progress game. No longer are the days we can just dedicate ourselves and build legends, oh no! Now, now my fellow Guardians, the non-spenders and life havers are getting reamed royally, albeit not fully but 90% is horrible, and our games just became a chore, instead of an enjoyable grindy task. It's ridiculous, and the greed has finally reared its ugly head like all developers get to eventually. Sixty bucks not enough for a pass and expansion... Now it's 10$ a pop for an upgraded Finisher, 20$ for a decent amount of resources you NEED TO PROGRESS, and 50$ to just get your character back to legend... Of you're lucky, otherwise the Silver cost just keeps going up because no longer do we have free to earn premium, oh no! Now it's restriction on restriction, and a definite Pay for Premium / Progress dynamic. I built my Titan to lvl50 and 750power in 48 hours of gameplay, over three days. Masterworked all armor, and halfway masterworked weapons. I'll give them a chance to redeem and see how difficult it really is, but Byngie is going to lose a lot of players with this new set up just so they grab the money instead of keeping it even. Byngie, you have divided the players, and made the game less enjoyable by a large margin. Beautiful updates, corrected a lot of issues, but the new dynamic is horrible, lopsided, greedy, and unsustainable for a large crowd of dedicated players.

11 RepliesWe are right back to people saying “you shouldn’t be upgrading yet”, “don’t infuse or masterwork till max light”.... This makes absolutely no sense at ALL! Why the he’ll would you not want to upgrade as you go? Imagine Skyrim if you had to do this. Would ruin the game! Note I don’t play anymore or “throw money at the screen” anymore. These buffoons just never learn. They nailed game physics and gun play but just can’t wrap their heads around whats fun or hard. Sure I could get on my hands and knees with a toothbrush and clean the kitchen floor. But if I built a pressure washer and a dope azz mop with some parts I’ve accumulated, wouldn’t that be so much more fun and powerful?!! I already have a job, don’t need another one atm. 🤷🏻♂️

I fully masterworked my Alpha Lupi and it cost me the equivalent of 380 cores. Luckilu for me i had 2000 but i wont be doing that evwr again XD
-
2 RepliesSo what is the power cap for those just playing the free game?
-
Yeah i get it IF U dont have a lot of time but u can get a random one from dismantling a gear or weapon. U get some from dismantling a already masterworked gear or weapon. There r bounties u can get cores from. Spider has some, okay, it doubles but i buy 1 or 2 from spider each day. But u do get enough legendaries to dismantle. With the change to crucible, dont know if they changed the rank system up on that as if u fully rank out u get 10 cores..

basicaly it happend, what ive said in the forum some weeks ago, where everybody called me an idiot, and that i would be stupid, and lolèd at me ... ive told u : instead of removing cores and shit for masterwork and enchanting, they put more mats into it the new mats needs to be paid for a draining ammount of mats , just to make us farm each day over and over again the same shit. ppl.. many of u paid 60 bucks for this ... and get again a hard slap in our faces. armor 2.0 was not , and realy not in anyway needed. they just had to make mods be removeable. but there intention with 2.0 was : again.. to drain our maerials.. the same shit we see at spider ^^ before we got 5000 glimmer for 10 materials.. now we got 10000 glimmer for 20 materials ...erm where is the point of this , and why its called a new" feature" ...?? nothing changed in generell in case about gameplay ...mobs still do a horrible ammount of damage, espacaly these AOE explosion dmg or granade dmg from knights, maybe it be the arcus ones, or the fire ones .... the stomp still kicks us arround the whole map...basicaly its a waist of time for any kind of melee stuff ( super or finisher ) ..... the finisher... looks nice, but what sense they have ? to get u 10 more glimemr with a mod ? finishers are the worst sh1t they brought to the game. because they are totla yuseless, and pointless.. difficulty levels are not based on game mechanics after all, but based on the fact : more mobs more dmg= harder game ...one of the oldes, idiotic, and time waisting thought a came company could have .. if u play on a harder difficult than basicaly it happens this : some ppl actually realy try to work through, some just say.. ah never mind we just die through it and thats it. actually we still get green shitty useless drops and blue ones while being on the moon ... we got a free set, but what the heck ..?!? are we on moon or at EDZ , somewhere in the woods ? the set we got does not fit , in any way to the setting of the moon. the design decisions they made are worse than everything ive seen so far ... yet again tons of ships, sparrows ghosts, with the same look a like than the past 2 years, just with another color... design of armor set, helmets, weapons .. is nothing more than a redesign and recolor. putting a scope on the same autorifle we have since 2 years and call it new is ( sorry ) a scam... bungie is , was not, and never will be listen to the community for anything at all .. the past 6 months 90% of those ppl who play the game was pissed about something, but yet they take it, keep there mouth shut, and accept the daily slap into there faces , instead of actually do something.
